HMC- XK8 Starts!

Welcome to the Azurite blue down-at-heel Merc club! Love the CLK, effectively a faster 2 door version of mine, down to the comedy rust and giffer type scrapes!

I'm much the same as you with Mercs, all the 190s I had were kept looking nice and respectable but I think ones of this era suit the faded grandeur workhorse look. My C200 even has an NI plate for the flat-roof-pub landlord look...

You always know you made a good deal when the car comes with free pan, VHS player and someone's old boots in the trunk.

Reminds me of the £100 Saab 900 that had a Fostex 8 track reel to reel and a cassette 4 track in the boot. By the time I'd sold them, the car was free. Seller reckoned it had previously belonged to Vivian Stanshall, too... cool car.

I like the cheap rusty shit that nobody else can be bothered to care for. Whenever I look for cars for sale I always feel I should be going for a low mileage giffer spec car with fsh. But my heart is always drawn to the sub £300 ugly tat. Especially if it was once prestigious and expensive... The cheaper and rougher looking the better really... who cares if it drives nice?

Anyway - the current HMC fleet gets my seal of approval. Keep up the good work.

Anyone fancy my merc camper?

It’s a 1998 Mercedes 208d MWB. Originally a minibus and fully trimmed etc, it now has 6 seats and a raised double bed with large storage under, and a quality new removable camping pod with water/ hob. Down as a motor caravan on the v5

It’s pretty tidy for an old sprinter - underneath is good but the corners of the door bottoms and a couple of the wheel arches are rusty.

It has a non turbo 2.3 om601- about 70 something bhp and it is SLOW. I maxed it at 75 mph which is it’s geared maximum reading a brochure.

MOT to September if memory serves- for the purposes of a swap I’d be happy with a straight swap for something worth 500-1000. I have some free time next week so could do the leg work and deliver.post-4673-0-19088600-1553109566_thumb.jpegpost-4673-0-33184400-1553109613_thumb.jpegpost-4673-0-04958900-1553109644_thumb.jpegpost-4673-0-12586600-1553109681_thumb.jpegpost-4673-0-83884800-1553109855_thumb.jpeg

That looks like a fine machine. I can second HMC's judgement of the OM601 being slow, but its a good old plodder. I'm almost tempted myself but I don't need a camper at the moment.

Does it condition air?

Factory fit aircon, the compressor chirps a bit but doesn’t do anything. It’s akso got a remote rear cabin heater plumbed into the cooling system, it’s fan not working at the the mo (not looked into it)

In “hyacinth blue” apparently

Say a man from Merseyside had a contract between Trentham, and Stoke City FC, and he was intent on staying over 2 nights a week, but didn't want to pay for a cheap B&B or AirBnB, do you think an underpowered camper would allow him to park up safely in the car park of his client (who runs the factory 24 hours a day) without anyone saying anything ?  Or would he have to pay to park it somewhere nice ?

I'm also in the position of liking this but not having anything to swap for it.  Plus your place is a bastard long way from my place in a 78bhp van.

Interesting, didn't realise that they kept using the OM.601 into the days of the Sprinter...

Yup, it carried on up to the facelift, when it was replaced by a low-blow version of the 2.1 CDI, which despite only having about 3bhp more was a hell of a lot quicker in the real world.

smol Krusty kompressor koupe update/

Knackered heater fan replaced......

post-4673-0-15406200-1553163655_thumb.jpeg

The old one seemed to have water damage, so I took apart the front bulkhead heater plenum and rodded it through- turned out the drains were partly blocked and in heavier rain it was spilling over into the cabin. NICHT GUT!!! All sorted now.

Triumph Dolomite 1300 1980, it is a project car but is hugely viable. I'll be putting up a post shortly.

HMC will have to prepare himself for the huge increase in performance.

All very tempting offers, actually I’ve sold it to a local mate.

I’m getting another merc and am also going to move the w210 e329cdi on. Any takers?

E320cdi estate avangarde auto 173k mot to mid April

Runs and drives, no warning lights. Not happy to kick down (flashes up an error) but no limp mode and can be kicked down with the selector. Doesn’t like revving much over 3k (?maf) but pulls very well despite this- nice and quick. Rusty wheelarches and tailgate, dented rear door scabby alloys, firm ride at the back ( tired spheres- got a new set To go with the car and easy enough to replace- I did it diy on my last one)post-4673-0-59978600-1553182332_thumb.jpeg

Having said that, it’s had long term owners and has the feel of a well looked after car. Interior excellent. Recent big bills for rear suspension pipe work replacement, 2 keys etc, starts on the key, lovely straight 6 diesel.

Located Tavistock and id like £150
