The end of the world (as you know it) is nigh

I'm glad I taught both my daughters to drive when they were 17 (now aged 23 & 25). However they are now both teaching their boyfriends. I don't see why you should need to use a SAT NAG to pass, a map was never required in the past. Also the 3 point turn which is no longer included may not have been a much used maneuver, but it does display the grasp of car control well.

I've never reversed round a corner since I passed my test 21 years ago.

I also avoid turning in the road wherever possible although I do like to indulge in the odd bandit U-turn.

What, never?  Into your drive?  Into a spot at Tesco?  It's a basic skill, like breathing, I can't believe it's being dropped.  Mind, it's 39 years since I passed mine so I suppose things change, but really>??  Is this how far standards have slipped?

Yes of course I have. That's not what they taught in the test though, I mean reversing around a junction, from one road into a side road or so on.

Given the parking dents Ive picked up by the invisible pixies in the Supermarket car park over the years its a skill many people lack.

Unlike breathing

Which is a skill many people could do with lacking... Especially the bastard pixies who cant fugging park

And isn't that exactly what you do, just with a more limited opening?  But anyway, I've done round-a-corner, into a side road, many times.  Anyone can get lost and have to turn round!

Mrs CW informs me that the focus is shifting to parking - reversing into and out of a parking bay - so we can hope for a drop in shopping related door damage. I say 'hope'.

I had turn in the road as my manoeuvre. I also am pretty sure the tester forgot to do the independent driving. Not sure how helpful pulling up on the side of the road, reversing and pulling back out is, surely this is a one way road they'll be doing this on?

Cars are starting to appear with automatic parking/lane change/stray dog avoidance/bottom wiping technology, so I guess the powers-that-be have made a decision thusly. Teslubergle self-driving cars will be featuring on AS in 20 years time, you read it here first! :D

If one day we're all "driving" self driving cars won't the driving test be obsolete??

But not if you're using a Sat Nav - they're infallible. The Governments rationale starts to make sense.

So, scum, your Morris 1100 /Alfa 33 / Mobylette / Munga / Robin Reliant / Pingu are doomed, YES Dooo med . The glorious Govnmt of whatshername has decreed SAT NAVS so no more will you be tellings wet behind the ears young dudes how to drive!!

Oh no. I've never seen an old car with a sat nav. Apart from the many I have. There you are. Panic over.

Someone should make satnavs that you can plug into any car.

Someone should make satnavs that actually give you usable directions to where you want to go.

I thought the driving test was all about accelerating really hard on the straights and then going around corners like a pussy, then accelerating really hard on straights.  I was going to say it's doing really well because drivers are really sticking to it.

I have an old Tom Tom 300 and even in its dotage the batteries will easily last the time of a driving test so doesn't need a fag lighter in the car.

The problem with the reversing around a corner of the public highway on today's test is probably that they have to wait so long for a gap in the traffic before being able to perform the manouvre, thus leaving no time to demonstrate competence at hand signals.

Smart phone running SatNav app blutack'd to the window is what the under 55s use.

It's so that they can't do a last minute turn, avoiding the government re-education centre that they've blindly followed the satnav to.

Ah haaa!! :)

Rugrats school is on a road (rammed solid each morn/pm) and when I drop her off [yes, adding to said rammage] I park just past an opening.. Slightly short of major pinch point - everyfukka wants to be at the gate! - and then reverse* >> around the corner >> to make a hasty exit.

*extra visibility points awarded to ToMM©, she's a beaut ;)

Sod all of that. What REALLY needs to be taught is how to open a car door without ruining the flanks of the motor you're parked next to. Seems like a basic skill, but I'm pretty convinced only a small percent of the population actually understand and can undertake the procedure effectively.

Edit: Looks like my 2000th post was a mild grump. Yay.

Meh.

Older people who have passed their test get annoyed at perceived lowering of standards for future drivers.

This has been happening since the days of having to have a guy walk in front of your car with a red flag. Dont worry about it.

If you have to worry about something, worry about the folk of ALL ages and experience levels who simply dont pay attention to whats going on around them.

Even more interesting is the bit about "answering a vehicle safety question while you’re driving".

What is the stopping distance of an MoT-exempt, barn-find A30 on 50-year-old crossplies from its downhill Vmax of 55mph ?

Exactly the distance to the gear lever of the nearest cherished classic, or financed A4.

My step daughter is the most tech-savvy person I have ever met and she is freaking out about passing her test before this loony piece of legislation is enacted.

pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for 2 car lengths and rejoin the traffic

The bloody hell is this?

It's what your neighbour across the road does every day when he's obstructing you, then setting off morning after.
