What would you love to own but know you never will? I think we all have a car we would love but because of cost, reputation etc you acknowledge that is unlikely you will push the boat out.

 

I would love a Range Rover sport but the complexity and unreliability mean it's a no no. Plus all the sub £10 k examples have around 130k meaning they are at the age where they are highly likely to grenade.

 

Supercharged jag in V8 flavour - cheap to buy but first big bill means its going for spares.

 

Audi RS4 - not spending £15 k on something with over 100k on the clock.

 

Jensen interceptor - rising prices mean the boat has well and truly sailed.

 

What others have I missed?

Tatra 603:  Came dangerously close to buying one in the 1980s.  It was for sale by a Czech chap near Cardiff.  He also had a Jensen CV8, Skoda Felicia (front engine, rear drive type)  and an Aero in his fabulous garage.  Wife commandeered the funds for a new kitchen.

 

Oldsmobile Toronado: Saw one for sale in Everett, WA on one of my frequent business trips there. $700!!!   This was in 1997.  A half baked plan was hatched to drive it to the East coast and have it shipped to the UK.  Work got in the way.  Plan was stillborn.

 

Wartburg Knight:  Tried to persuade my dad to buy one.  He gave a flat 'NO.'  Now I feel too old and decrepit to buy a decrepit twostroke.

I used to have an MX-5 from 2012-2013, sold it for £1,450 and I seriously doubt I could find such a good condition mk2 1.8 for that money these days.

Bloke I bought my Xm from is having his testes hardened atm by all accounts. I hope he succeeds with it, they are lovely to look at, an engineering marvel and OH! the door bins. You haven't lived unless you played with those...

 

+1 for big engined rwd Jap coupes and Lotus Carlton. I'd like to think I have the cahunas for an Alfa someday, but this may not come to pass

I've also had a deep seated hankering for these '80s Toyota hiaces since I drove one back in the early 90s. Three abreast seating and a column change, plus the 2.0 petrols went like stink.

I well and truly missed the boat here, most of them went for export to Africa. The odd occasion one does turn up for sale in the uk it's similarly priced to those awful air cooled VW contraptions all the hipsters want.

Anything 1970s and Japanese as well, it'd probably be cheaper importing something from Oz than buying anything worth having in the UK. Anything that is in the UK will be rotten and parts are a rarity.

 

I'm also going off the idea of anything featuring Hydrasag suspension due to parts availability, also Allegros seem to actually be worth something now. Sad times.

The Avantime is pretty easy to look after it's all espace parts. I still think they're cheap.

I've had a cl500 and an xjr and never had may problems . I think l the key is to buy and enjoy them for a few months before they start having problems .

Marinas and Rootes Arrows have now left me behind, as Cortinas did long ago.  Which is a shame, as I loved my mk5 2.0GL auto.

In fact almost anything RWD is running away, as the aging supply dries up and the drifters and rally boys kill off everything they can get.  There's no way I'll have another BMW, or a Mercedes, and as time goes on those will be the only things left.  Even what's left of Detroit is largely FWD, as it's been for 30 years or more.  Rolls Royce?  Bentley?  Oh yes please, absolutely, but even if I found one I could afford to buy, the first FTP would see it Hiabbed away.  Jags?  Done that, when you could buy a Series 2 Sovereign for a ton...

...and whatever I may say on X308 threads, the appeal of the later cars simply isn't as strong as the thin-bumper S2.  Mind I reckon I'd jump at a 308 at the right price, but see my RR comment above, same applies.
