Would you describe yourself as a Motoring Enthusiast?

You want to attract self-opinionated, ill-informed crashing bores?

Tell them you drive an electric car.

Am I right? Or am I right?

Baiting petrol bores is my new hobby.

On the occasions me and a few mates get together for a beer or 6, there is usually 4 of us.

1 garage owner, once a car nut who now hates cars and people having been in the trade too long. Hates EVs especially.

1 fairly disinterested in cars and has a hybrid BMW

1 absolute car nut. Supercar in the garage, owned a string of 911s, favourite place is the nurburgring.

Me.

I take great delight in telling them how impressed I have been with the EVs I've driven. (Don't own one or have any intention of getting one).

I've driven a few Zoes. They are bloody fantastic.

It makes for an interesting evening.

For a few days after, the car nut will send me videos of Clarkson running out of power deliberately, or a Tesla on fire or some other anti ev propaganda which I don't even bother playing.

EV drivers are the new vegans or iPhone users but EV deniers are also a thing.

Beats arguing about Brexit.

Again.

I’ve noticed you are forbidden in public from raising any issues about electric cars, almost like you’ve had the temerity to question a movement. I often think, let’s just go all the way with this environmental crusade.

Let’s immediately ban all internal combustion engines. The Government could start a mandatory scrappage scheme of all pre 2016 vehicles and crush the lot, every last one, classics, the lot. Then we will all be able to breathe and probably live another 3 weeks longer.

You’re right. Any objection ( or merely pointing out any problems) to EVs makes you a denier .

It's not forbidden just boring.

The average Internet Motoring Enthusiast seems to think they are really onto something by informing someone who is interested in or owns an electric car that Hey, Don't You Know You Have To Plug Them In Quite Often, or maybe Did You See Those Tesla Queues At Christmas, Only Takes 17 Seconds To Fill Up A Petrol Car, Amirite? Or perhaps that all time classic, Those Things Are Quite Expensive, My Rancid Golf SDI Only Cost £87 And Runs On Most Types Of Fat That I Scavenge From Bins.

So it's not that you're forbidden from criticising EVs, it's that people reserve the right to not care when you point out some bleeding obvious thing that they must have known about and considered when they bought it.

Obvs still fuck Tesla Fanbois who cannot accept any criticism of their beloved supreme leader's remote control car, those guys are the worst.

No, I'm not a motoring enthusiast really (any more). I'm not even that bothered about driving (any more).

Boil it right down, I just like seeing old cars in use that have outlived their natural life.

That's the nail on the head for me.

Yesterday I had to drive somewhere and wasn't enjoying it particularly until I saw a rusty ex BT grey smiley transit and than some kind of specialist 02 plate MAN truck that looked like new. The rest of the motors on the road not so much.

And as has been said above, the average "motoring enthusiast" and motoring publication seems mainly to talk about the value/investment potential of everything. A bit depressing.

Used to work with a guy on the Bicester Heritage site. We were surrounded by countless priceless classics pretty much every day.

He rarely tweets but did so on spotting a Sherpa. Kudos to him, I'm made the same way really. A lot of the classic stuff leaves me cold especially British chrome underpowered bollocks from the 50s. But seeing a ripe old Sherpa or Ital gets me going.

My favourite exhibit in the Gaydon motor museum was a last-of-the-line B-reg Ital estate, which is in their 'back room' and not on display. I even enquired about it in case it was for sale.

I think it's the fact that such things are unloved by many but saved by one - someone has gone to the effort of preserving something that was once everywhere, and is now basically extinct.

I used to consider myself to be a motoring enthusiast but what I know pales into insignificance compared to other members on this forum. Furthermore I am less keen on driving these days.
