A sad end. A tad disapointing as well as mechanically they are tough - it's rot that sees them off.

Well, this one sure wasn't tough enough.

Indeed not, though I get the impression that the engine is only just run in. The PG1 gearbox does have a bit of a reputation for doing differentials in - the Ti is especially prone (don't get too carried away Wuvvum!), so there's clearly an inherent weakness there. Maybe I should have gone for one with even more Honda in it.

I take my hat off to you, DW. Lots of talk of compo etc and a lot of people would have been firing off foul mouthed tirades and whatnot, yet you've stayed calm and been pretty cool about it. My proverbial hat is doffed in your direction.

Well, there's not a lot of point getting angry is there? I could have started giving the patrolman a load of verbal, but that wouldn't have undone what would have happened. Instead, I helped him try to work out how on earth we were going to get it back off the dolly again. I'm miffed for sure, but anger rarely improves a situation.

That said, if it had been my 2CV that had been damaged, I may have been a little angrier!

dollywobble in secret relief at not having to give an excuse for wanting to get rid of the rover.... ;-)

I similar use a trailer most days and can't see how the Rover managed to ride out of the wheel pans, had the patrol removed the straps then decided to reverse back with the cars hand brake on or did it ride forward when he braked ?

I have had one strap come loose before on an Escort van and that tried to ride backwards out of the pan (outside Tonbridge Police stn of all places) and broke its washer bottle but i have also forgot to strap one side of a Yaris down and went thru Blackwall tunnel into some ruff part of east London and it didn't budge an inch.

If the AA guy is like me he will be feeling absolutely gutted about it.

It's a numbers game though us and the yellow mob shift thousands of cars around each year on these trailers and sooner or later the odd one will have to go tits up.

I'm sure the AA will sort you out, just don't make too much noise about the fact the car has shat it's gearbox and isn't going back on the road.

I really don't understand it. He definitely strapped both wheels down, and definitely stopped after just a few hundred yards to double-check them again. He was reversing the rig when the fail happened. I thought that was quite ambitious myself. Maybe I was right.

Claim is now in progress, so not a lot more to report until I hear back from The AA.

A lot of people said the same about me when my Astra was stolen but I'm the same as DW, getting angry and throwing a hissy fit isn't going to bring it back. Saying that i hope you have more luck than me, still waiting for my money for my car...

It probably helps that A, your a shiter, and we have a better perception of 'doing the right thing and b don't have much emotional attachment to the car.

Is this the shortest time you've owned a car?

Strange indeed, they can be reversed but are hateful.

My one has a hydraulic valve that you close to lock the trailers wheels straight ahead but after 15 years i still avoid going backwards as it's a messy affair.

The straps must of come off for it to physically ride out of the pans.

A patrol i know (not me honest) bought a cheap winch remote off ebay for his trailer to save him tripping over the original controls long lead and he had a similar sort of thing happen.

When he was winching a Saxo on to the trailer the remote failed to switch off and pulled the car out of the trailers wheel pans and started heading towards the back of his van before he managed to run around and hit the emergency stop switch.

That took two jacks, many blocks of wood, removing the front wheels and about an hour to get the Citroen back on the ground again.

Embarrassing lesson learnt, don't by cheap chinese winch remotes from ebay kids...

True. I just remembered that my 2CV did get thumped mightily up the arse nine months after being restored. I wasn't that angry then either. At least the bloke stopped and gave me his insurance details.

Not sure about shortest ownership, but definitely a contender for most miles in the shortest time. About 1700 in just over four weeks.

Exactly.

When a van ran into the back of me in my old MX5 I was calm with the driver. When I spoke to the driver's boss on the the phone he got annoyed with me saying accidents happen, he started ranting that his drivers shouldn't be driving into people.

I feel partly responsible for this in a shite karma balance way .

As do I. I fixed lots of things on my Rover and NOW look what's happened!

Its all part of the fun of being a shiter innit. "The gearbox packed up then it fell off the AA trailer and mashed the floor. Ho-hum!!!! What shall I get next then?" Great stuff.

Aye. Imagine if this had happened in my year-old Land Rover Discovery or something? That would actually be bloody annoying.

Ok, what's next on the automotive tick off list?

It's heart warming to see common sense and maturity prevail here. Everyone just seems to go straight for the "I'm a victim and owed mega bucks in compo" route. I love the autoshite attitude to things like this :)

If you get close to what you paid for the car in compo you'll be quids in, and you'll still have the car.

I would sell the interior and either sell or bridge the rest as a whole.

If anyone's got a book open on DWs next car, I'll wager a fiver on RICEBARGE eg LS400, Legend, Camry etc.

My only experience of dollys was going to the aid of a mate who had a blowout on the dolly whilst dragging a dead 214 with a Freelander.

Our plan was to abandon the Rover and throw the bits of the dolly in the back of the Landrover.

I had a 1.4 Corsa tied to the back of the Rover to pull it off the dolly but instead it pulled the whole lot up the road handbraked Landrover and all.

Quite how DWs Rover jumped the dolly I will never know.

We all know it could have been much worse, I can't lay my hand on the picture at the moment though...

I've no idea. It was making a bloody horrible noise on the overrun as we approached Cholmondeley though.

Yo!

I feel your pain, mate. :-)

So sorry to hear about this DW. I agree that anger won't solve the issue, it's happened and now we have to deal with it, I've used the AA a fair few times now and they have always been above and beyond with me, it's just one of those things I'd say. Plenty more tat in the sea (of ebay and mungtree).

Handbrake perhaps left on?

EDIT: Just seen the other page and DW's account/the professional input.

Do as many, and ignore me!
