Things to do with £3000

I think I can make finances work next year to afford the £3000+ that the 2CV needs for its salvation. However, being a car man bloke who's crap with the money, I'm already considering what else I could do with that money.

 

What about a £2295 Rolls-Royce?

Obviously, I wouldn't consider painting it, other than with emulsion, and I'd probably try and make back some money by flogging most of the brightwork. Also, straight-through exhaust, obviously.

 

Or I could buy the Transit van of my dreams. Discovery-esque snout, and the parcel van body with upside down wipers. I LOVE THESE. £3000

Or I could try and find a nice Ami 6 in France and drive it home. Problem is, there's only one on Leboncoin at the moment, and it's 17,000 Euro pounds! Sod that! I'm hoping I haven't missed the Ami boat.

3k doesn't get you a lot of stuff in the UK but not a lot of really nice stuff. By the looks of it the money would stretch further in France or whatever.

You can even justify it by telling yourself (probably wrongly) that you'll make £££ when you come to sell it one, which will go into the 2CV resto pot.

I would buy something incredibly shit really far away (probably east) and drive it home. Treat yourself to a flight out and the odd swish hotel on the (scenic) way back. Once home write up your adventure for the journal of your choice in return for ca$h moneys.

Get some unobtainium pipework made up for the xm for when the inevitable happens? Or write and buy a big shopping list of parts to sort the 2cv out? Then either keep it or minter it and wheeler dealer it for ££££?

 

Or a laguna 2 and keep enough cash in the glove box to just buy the nearest £500 car to where you are when it breaks down, torch it and drive home...

Repair the 2cv. I was tempted by bentleys when xxx started his heroic tale of woe, but was put off with the resulting bills. I think I've found my level of pain/reward/bills with my Mercedes. My 2cv will need a bit of welding this summer but it's been 8 years since the last tickle with the MIG.

Here's the problem with the 'restore a 2CV' idea. Given how little money my lifestyle currently runs on, it seems extraordinarily extravagant to blow £3000 on restoring a car that yes, I've had adventures a-plenty in, but which is probably not going to get much use (3000 miles per annum since 2010, and sometimes not even that). £3000 to restore a car which is not as comfortable or quiet as the Dyane, and which is frankly going to get overlooked for any lengthy journey because I've ruined myself by getting an XM. 

 

Frankly, the most sensible option would be to throw a grand at the Dyane so it's all solid again, throw a few hundred quid at the XM to keep it in fine fettle and use the rest to fund some sort of driving adventure. Like getting to the ICCCR in The Netherlands next August, or driving up to the FANTASTIC scrapyard in Scotland that FOAD keeps posting about.

To be fair it's your £3k and whatever you choose to do will be the right thing, sounds to me like you know what you want to do and if the 2CV is tucked away safely it will wait for you. I have a '68 998 Cooper awaiting rebuild and that's going nowhere since 10 years ago, whilst funds get apportioned.

Frankly, the most sensible option would be to throw a grand at a MIG welder, consumables and zintec to DIY restore the 2CV and use the rest to buy more cars.
