The first car i ever used to tow a caravan was a Maxi 1750 diesel. As a car they were boring boring boring, but as a towing vehicle they were staggering. The diesel engine, combined with the low ratio box gave them enormous torque. They would only do 50 mph, but they would still do 50 mph up a 1 in 3 hill, with a 24 foot van on the back,

They were built like tanks, and only rusted slowly, Patching rust holes on one was like replacing deck armour on the HMS Illustrious.  The fuel tank was huge, it was like filling a Lancaster Bomber.

According to DVLC there is about 100 Austin Maxi 1750 of various flavours still taxed tested insured and running in UK

Diesel engine?

Diesel in a Maxi?  Must have been a conversion at a later date, possibly using a Sherpa lump.  Either that or it was yet another prototype BMC/BL product, they were buggers for lashing together diesel versions and then punting them on to an enthusiastic worker.

It was the same guy who sold me the Saab 99 with the Dolomite Sprint engine in......

You're all wrong. BL used a three-cylinder Petter diesel in these, with the gearbox mounted behind, driven by a chain.

I'm confused, how can the diesel pull better than the petrol if you didn't think they did a petrol?

I liked how the diesel version spread its 1750cc over 12 cylinders in an inline configuartion, diagonally across the engine bay.

My old Morgan Plus-5 (you know, the one with the Mercedes diesel) was also a great tow car.

The diesel Maxi was actually a joke by Issigonis knowing he was coming up to retirement,he kept the design secret from management until 3 weeks before launch by which time the 1st pre production diesel had been built, using a scaled down deltic engine mounted under the seats.BL quickly had to shoehorn a stretched a series in before the press launch and the diesel Maxi was bought by a cross dressing friend of Issigonis. It is believed to have been crushed during the great scrapyard famine of 1997.

I preferred the Wolseley and Riley versions.

I was always a fan of the MG Maxi XPower 350 which had the 346bhp interior fan and green XPower graphics which really complemented the russet brown or harvest gold paint options.
