Austin Maxi 1750

You didn't sell it to a bloke called Chamberpot did you?

Mr Chamberpot formerly of Godstone certainly purchased it from my manor, yes

Spotted it in the Ebay thread on here believe it or not, went over and was pleasantly surprised.

Fetched it (trailered by a BX NA across the Thames) and got it back on the road after getting the toe-boards welded, ball joints, brakes and a smile.

Kept it a year using it plenty, but when his Biarritz went up in smoke and the insurance cash came through, it seemed the right way to go.

This is a true story, a mate had a beige Maxi back in the 1990's, he used to leave it parked on the pavement with the keys in it opposite his house and it never got stolen or moved...

Petrol or diesel?

Well if the bloody thread won't die I may as well have some fun.

We are champions of crappy old things...... This thread will be lovingly kept at the top and used daily in spite of it's complete unsuitability for the task....

I take it you removed the caravan temporarily to show us that the rear bumper had the correct complement of fog lamps and towing equiptment?

For grim diesel power I present the Peugeot 204 diesel. If they had built a maxi diesel it would of been the competion.

Someone at work tested a factory diesel MGB GT prototype. Yeah, you read that right.

Apparently it would do 60 flat out.

There was a P6 diesel built as well for the shop foreman at Solihull. It was slower than the B.

Off topic but does anyone.e remember the Austin 1300 with two doors on the underside and just one on the offside?

Custom for some employee with kids so they could never get out into the road...

I call bollocks on the 60mph MGB diesel. Father had a sherpa with the B series diesel (admittedly the 1.8 not the 1.6) which would do 65-70 no bother.

I'm not saying it was wonderful but there was a B series diesel engined KGB (spell checker's joke) just down the road from me. As already mentioned these engines were OK by the late 70's, and might have improved the Maxi's fortunes if it could have been fitted in. Perkins similar sized 4108 'powered' Fiats and Alfas of that era - anyone know what they were like?

Wandering a bit, (like the car) an ambition l'm unlikely to fulfil is owning a Volga powered by the aforementioned Peterborough diesel. I don't know how many they sold here, but theres little danger of finding one now.

My guess is that they got as far as making the engine fit but didn't do anything about the gearing.

I think the 1500 Maxi was petrol but the 1750 was a diesel. Ford later bought the rights to it and called it the Endura D.

If any Maxi driving shiters are suffering from poor brakes then my local Tesco has an isle full of Maxi pads.

All they did to dieselize the B-Series was raise the compression to a trillion to one which meant it would actually run on whatever fuel was more abundant. Petrol, diesel, water, milk or gravel.

OK. Here's the caravan.

Happy now? :)

Everybody knows that the Allegro should have been a hatchback but very few know that the Maxi shouldn't.

Also the new Mini is bigger than a Maxi.

The new Mini is bigger than a Peterbuilt.

Sorry, that was a fib.

I meant the current Mini Countryman is 2mm slimmer than a Ford Granada

To this day, I still have a mental image of a sh!ter putting a diesel engine in a Maxi, and A-framing a Renault 20 all the way from France through the Chunnel.

..Not to mention the top secret Maxi electric hybrid they were working on, until Toyota beat them to it.  The Maxi having a very flat floorpan made it easy to accept a battery tray. And when electric powered it would be 4 wheel drive.

^ That Maxi must be diesel because the internetz say so.

On a different note, if you squint at 'Austin Maxi Diesel' badging for long enough, you will see 'Aston Martin DB7'. Be safe, and don't trust anyone or anything.
