This rust stained mk2 granada arrived this morning...........

Its got a decent amount of MOT and runs and drives well enough.

Its a poverty entry level 'L, made to this spec in a short period after the facelift but before late '82 revision which included a 5 speed box. Hence its a 4 speeder with the 2.0 pinto, keep fit windows, and no PAS. Though at some point the misery of base spec motoring got to someone, and ghias alloys and a few bits of ghia chrome have been added to the front end. Also- are the standard lights crap? Almost every mk2 I have seen (including this) seem to have an array of spot and fog lamps bolted to the front end.

Its reasonably tidy overall. There are a few scabs and blisters, but the underside looks good at least. Theres a replacement diff in the boot (the current one whines a bit) and the interior is a bit grubby with mis matched seats. I found an easy listening cassette and 20p in the glovebox. Ive got some tiger print seat covers to hide the seats to complete the slightly shonky look of the car.

I love to see a povo spec car like this, too many ghia spec cars get kept and no base spec ones like this preserved. Similar spec to Taxi variant?

how does it go? I never had anything less than a 2,8 in these and often wondered if the 2.0 motor might not be a little, ahem, lethargic?

Posted

I love that. I'd look into fitting a type 9 5 speed box if you can, that will transform that into a easy to live with daily driver.

That looks great, are you going to de chrome it?

Molto spaff...

I'm all over this, had an 83, 2.0 L saloon aeons ago, same steering wheel but with the "overdrive" gearbox, I believe it still sits in my friends garden.

(Should you require any non estate specific bits 'n bobs, give us a shout, it may still harbour what you want)

A favourite descriptive word of mine.

I use shonky a lot. In fact, where cars are concerned, if something ISN'T shonky, then I'm not buying it.

Lovely car and great to see a low spec survivor.

The 2.0 pinto isn't as gutless in a big car as you'd think. I've got a 2.0 pinto in my LWB mk2 Transit and it's a bit bigger than a Granada! It goes perfectly well IMHO.

My Ghia X doesn't have the round spotlights in the grille so they certainly didn't all have the mass of front lights most of the remaining cars seem to have. I prefer them without personally.

Great purchase!

Love it, your driveway must be looking like an early 90s Ford dealer forecourt by now.  The Mk2 Granada is just the sort of thing they might have had in as a trade-in against the brand new Mk3 you've got there.

How's the Escort doing these days?

Nice, I love bottom of the range, me. Does it have unassisted steering? Needs pressed Serck rear plate!

I would bin the centre console, fogs, roof rack, tow hitch and rear wiper, but I am odd like that.

Oh very nice! Brilliant to see a low spec car. I am sure that there are more 2.8 i GhiaX cars around now than ever left the factory. The estate versions of these are huuuuuge.

I've never had a manual Granada, I've had a couple of 2 litre cars, a couple of 2.3L/GL and a 2.8 Ghia X carb saloon.

Lovely cars.

Also- are the standard lights crap?

To say that would be the most epic understatement in human history. They are so woefully abysmal that I wonder why they bothered to mount them at all.

When it's night and raining, you'll find yourself stopping and checking with a match whether they are actually on.

Compared with a MKII Granny that's a flak searchlight.

That is just class in a glass.

Any more pics? When is the raffle?

The 'L' model should have the bumper end-caps in plastic, the chrome bumpers are actually correct. No spots/fogs on these either so they're aftermarket...

Thank goodness it was in the glovebox, imagine if it had slipped into the hand-brake

That looks superb! :-D

I think that the mark 2 Granada's styling lends itself well to a lack of excess adornment:

That steering wheel! I had forgotten these were briefly fitted to the poverty spec MK2 Granada around 1982/83

Indeed! Can't remember ever seeing that type steering wheel in a Granada before.

Interesting to compare the base spec interior and dash to the top spec ones.

Here's mine.

All those gauges and buttons blanked off, no wood (or plastic wood either!) different wheel...

I wonder what the price difference was between base and Ghia X?

Always good to see any Granada still alive.

The fact they still look good today says it all I think.

Nicely patinated, and great to see an utterly poverty spec Grandad wagon saved.

It's all still better than Granny MKII standard headlights. Trust me on that.

I tried 135/100W H4s in mine in Scandinavia and still couldn't see bugger all.

I had auxilliary lights fitted there and then.

This wasn't an occurrence experienced with one example - I had 14 of them

and am on #15 now.
