You gonna take part in a few omgconcourse shows when it's first finished?

No plans to do any of those kind of shows - if I feel the need for tedium, I can buy more chod and bare metal it! :)

Finished up the last batch of painting today, its gonna be too cold to do any more for the foreseeable week or two. I made a start on cleaning up the steering rack too - got the worst of the crud off, just need to finish up all the nooks and crannies next time I'm down there.

One day there'll be no more cleaning of rank parts left to do!

More preparation for black paint today -

Brake servo was a bit rusty, but cleaned up well

Brake lines off the rear axle still had most of the factory paint on them.

Prop shaft was the biggest, but easiest job of the day

Rear axle/diff next on the hit list. :)

Much of today was spent in bed, so no rear axle action, but did get a little more done -

It's amazing how some rusty old bits clean up so well when others don't.

Got a few bits painted in the kitchen this morning - the stink of paint will probably be around for a while!

Most of today has been spent trying to find a new clutch release bearing, and after many hours of internet action, I finally found one. :)

Jesus wept! Only the engine left to do as far as oil/crap/rusty muck removal goes. I'll not miss it when it's over :(

Still no sign of any welding yet either, but he assures me he'll start it next weekend. :)

You're inspiring me to give my mk1 Golf this treatment over the summer.  It runs ok(-ish) but has been off the road for quite a few years and really wants a full recommissioning with brake and fuel pipes, hoses and probably an overhaul of the electrics.  If that goes ok I might get brave and tackle the SD1 (which is probably no more difficult, just bigger).

That POR 15 is a bloody good paint . I'm sure I read somewhere that it degrades in Uv light and needs to be overcoated . Never had any probs myself though

Apparently its only the colour that is altered by UV light, but with black paint being UV damage resistant to a certain extent anyway, and all the bits treated with it being underneath the car, it shouldn't be a problem. My engine bay, sills, inner wings and rear wheel tubs will be done in grey, but these areas will be painted over.

Great work, it's really nice to see somebody doing a proper job.

The rewards of all this cleaning will be worth it when putting it back together as you won't get dirty then.

Do it! The satisfaction of such endeavours cannot be measured!

I love cleaning the crap off old engine bits etc.

I don't mind a little crud removal, but a whole car's worth is stretching it a bit!

Cheers! Reassembly of clean, freshly painted stuff is definitely my favourite part of the process. :)

I visit the thread about this car on retro rides - it is one of the very few I follow there, since I don't visit the site much anymore. You really couldn't wish for a better owner for this lovely and very rare car!

Superb stuff.

Fantastic

I just love these threads..

Is there an equivalent Autoshitti in Italy with threads by mad italians beavering away on Regattas and Trevis?

Many thanks! I reckon there probably is - complete with arm waving emoticons!

Thank you kindly!

My mate Sam from the unit next door kindly welded in the piece I made for the spring seat.

I ground it back myself, now hopefully I can get this all cleaned up ready to paint this week. :)

Suspension component weldage?

In '85 I M.O.T.d my IMP [884 KOE] after a fairly extensive refurb.

884_KOE2.jpg

Both front wishbones (later parts - Low Pivot) had been 'refurbed' and a neat plate welded in under the kingpin mount (can be frilly!)

Splash of HiKote black & away U go ;)

MOT will fail that now. IMPers today have a lot of this done 'invisibly' now.. all dressed up..

You reckon the same on your spring pan fix?

I am enjoying all of this cleany-painty action.

Me too! But now it's too cold to paint stuff, attention has turned to cutting out car pox, and my mate John has made a start on replacing what's been cut out. There wasn't much time today, but progress was made!

The nearside arch/wheel tub/sill end is now tacked into place - just needs welding in on the next session.

In all honesty there appears to be feck all 'real' grot. That is a pretty impressive car.

Indeed, theres no super crusty bits to report so far. :)

Not a lot done of late - got my rear brake lines painted yesterday, but that's about it!

This is fantastic keep up the hard work

Cheers!

Spent a bit of time cutting out the poxy bits of the offside rear arch earlier. This side looked a lot worse than the other before cutting, but underneath the outer lip its in much better condition than the nearside. A repair is needed to the inner arch on the nearside, but I'll probably get away with just the outer lip on this.

Memory card is full at the present time, but I should get more pics during the session planned for Friday! :)
