Invalid carriage blue Mk1 Cavalier

Stripped the carburettor off the manifold earlier - I won't be needing the Solex any more, but the rest needs a good clean. The exhaust manifold can be sand blasted, and the inlet can be wire brushed, but the base plate responded well to some petrol and elbow grease.

The throttle linkage came up well with the same treatment. :)

Throttle linkage de-gunked.

Inlet manifold scrubbed up nicely.

Engine mount + bell housing brackets sand blasted ready to paint.

Exhaust manifold should be blasted tonight, thanks to Big Steve at work. :)

Finally put the lid on the engine.

This Cav'll be far from shite by the time it's finished. Great to see OCD-like attention to detail, in the nicest possible way!

Thank you kindly!

Manifolds + nice new carburettor now installed.

Painted the last of the brackets/engine mounts etc. today too. Once those bits are fitted, it just needs the clutch and flywheel throwing on and it's ready to go back in.

Oh - spoke to the painter bloke this morning, and it can go over to get the front end painted on the 16th. :)

Unexpectedly, I got a bit of time on this today. Engine mounts and bell housing brackets were fitted, along with the thermostat housing and coolant hoses etc. Basically, apart from the clutch and flywheel, its ready to go back where it came from. 8-)

With any luck, it'll still work!

Today's installment is all about getting the front end ready for painting at the weekend - once I've finished rubbing down the last bit of grey paint around the nearside headlight panel, I've just got to rip the nosecone back to bare metal and it's good to go.

I'll chuck a pair of space savers on the back, and wheel it over the yard on Saturday morning for its prime + paint session. :)

VW steelies with track day tyres on the back.(lost one of my space savers!) -

Rudimentary "handlebars" in position to facilitate wheeling it over the yard -

Once I've given it all a good clean (its very dusty in there right now) we're ready for Saturday! :)

Mk1 Cavs are such pretty old things. They're lovely to drive but are so hugely different to the Mk2. I know it's not the thing on here, but I'd love to see a period wheel choice fitted when it's done. It'll look peachy, regardless.

Cheers! No plans to change the wheels, but if the right set present themselves I might indulge!

Gave this a good clean on Friday -

Car was delivered to the paint blokes, then I got stuck in to some other jobs. Started dressing the welds on my passenger door - this is after chucking some primer on to see how much more needs to come off -

Painted my wiper arms, horn, and a few odds and ends, then went over to have a look -

You can't beat fresh paint as a motivational aid! :)

Back in the day... struggling to keep ahead of the tin worm...

would the whole front end we see here be 'bodge/DailyExpress'

and carry on till the front chassis rails went lacey >>> fail MOT >>> fragg?TS

The poxy ones I've seen tend to suffer in the sides of the front valance, and front of the inner wings behind the headlights mostly. The chassis rail ends seem to be protected by the bumper.

Great thread. Can you please quit your job, leave the wife, sell the house and move into the lock up. That way I will get my fix of Mk1 resto porn much quicker. Win win really. :-P

Thank you kindly! Moving in may happen when re assembly begins. :)

Collected the car from the paint blokes this morning, and the nosecone + front valance had already been polished up.

Yes - that is indeed my ugly mug reflected in the nosecone - that must be my "intense concentration" face! :P

The insides of the wings finally got a lick of the grey stuff today -

Once scotched and stone chipped, these will probably be next to receive some blue paint.

I made a start on polishing the engine bay too - its a messy job, but it's getting there!

The new paint looks a lot more vivid a hue next to the old - this shot of the rear screen frame shows how much it has faded compared to where the window seal was.

Wow! That paint looks fantastic. Really nice job.

It's amazing how much the old paint had faded, it looks almost like a pastel purple instead of the proper blue it should be.

Cheers! I'm pretty pleased with it. :)

Back to stripping paint off again today - the majority of it was pretty quick, but the part that bolts to the inner wing in the engine bay was a lot more time consuming.

A lot more stripping to left to do! :(
