Impulstipo, Tipo TD - for sale

Recommended Posts

Another week, another collection, or so it seems, but this week it's a bit different. It's the Tipo I bought on impulse yesterday after seeing Wuvvum post it in the tat thread.

My thought process went something like:

Mmm, nice TD Tipo ... like, can't buy

OMG, digidash ... really want, can't buy, I have 13 cars, which is about 7 too many.

Check HML, see there's 4 digidash TD Tipos left on the road ... I'd better buy it I might not see another for sale for years.

Hours later ... wtf am I going to do with another car?

I asked a couple of mates if they were free to give me a lift for the collection, but they weren't and it's only down in Leicestershire, so I checked train fares etc, £26 and under 2hrs from Grantham, not too bad. I then call the seller and ask how far from his local station he is, around the corner is the reply, but don't catch the train, where do I live? I explain Lincs, not far from Grantham. He then says he'll pick me up tomorrow Sunday (morning) and run me back to his to collect the Tipo.

It is now Sunday morning and as an early riser I have done my paperwork, laundry, ironing and am about to have breakfast when I receive a text, he's on his way. I'd better sort that dayinsurance thing.

Love the whole buying 'idea' when you're already over-subscribed with chod, it must be an Autoshite thing.

Brilliant stuff Chris. I shall be watching this with great interest.

ÃŽm glad im not the only one to browse HML? to further convince myself of a chod purchase.

Looking forward to the derv shot and obv the Digi dash one too.

Edit- great thread title- sounds like italian for misfire!

I'm more interested to see what of his current stock will be up for sale soon, that is unless I find a 306 cabby to chuck my wad on.

Aerodeck and W202 are top of the list to go Tim.

Oh, and a Storia X4 will also be for sale when I send the paperwork off to DVLA

I used to look after a TD digi dash Tipo, would've been around 2003 ish last time I saw it. It was dark green and had done about 250K! Everything still worked though. The dash was pretty cool!

I seem to remember changing it's alternator and struggling for space though, the Diesel Fiat Uno was even worse.

A mate had one for a short time aswell and loved it, until it was written off.

I was sat here yesterday morning thinking I should have had a bid on that Tipo.  Glad it's joining the fold!

So good.   Pics of the digi dash?

Maybe it's just the era that i grew up in but doesn't the styling on that just look 'right'?   Some might say it's bland, but at least it's not trying to be something that it isn't like most of the shiny tat on the roads today.

I spy with my little eye, something beginning with W.

Dash appears fully functional, but a bit dim in places and worn in others

Old school dizzle motor - I've tightened the clamp on the boost hose so hopefully that will leak less.

Broken bit next to filter - engine seems to run fine, but does anyone know what the broken/exposed pins belong to?

Almost went to look at one of these, albeit a normal clocked one. Think they like a bit of veg

Right, first impressions were not great.
The blurred/out of focus pictures on the advert were actually quite flattering.
Mileage is showing 26k, however I don't think the digidash has a sixth digit, so assume it's 126k.
Wheels/tyres - hideous/rubbish but legal.
Interior relatively tidy but smelly and wear on the drivers seat.

History not present but assured it will be forwarded on shortly. I do have some "notes" indicating a service is due and the cambelt was done 15k miles ago. I also have the V5 and MOT cert  (MOT Feb 2016)

50 miles back roads home showed up.
Ride is a bit wallowy - springs/shocks look OK.
Handling wasn't great - will change wheels/tyres and see if it improves.
Central locking has a mind of it's own.
Unable to open tailgate.
Wipers - these appear to be home-made
Several signs of giffer repairs around the bodywork.

Verdict - I'm slightly disappointed but for £340, I still think it was cheap.

I'll be using the Aerodeck for Shitefest as this needs work to be done before doing 400+ miles in it.

That sounds like standard autoshite - be happy!

That's still full of win. I pulled the loom out of my old 1.4 when I scrapped it and am about to chuck it out if you need any connectors or owt.

Cheers for the info Dave.

Rich, could I be cheeky and ask for the full loom? ... spare wire/connectors are always handy.

I had a 1.6 H reg digital dash Tipo in the early 2000's.

The digital dash worked well at first then did start to fade away, particularly the rev counter, IIRC eventually you couldn't read half of the rev counter. Also the bulb failure warning lights were constantly telling me the brake light bulbs had failed (which they hadn't).

I also had problems with the central locking in that the rear passenger door would decide sometimes not to unlock or vice versa.

I just put it all down to Fiat electrics.

It was a good car to drive, comfortable, quick and held the road well.

I gave it to my parents who eventually part exchanged it for a Renault Megane, by then you could feel the seat frame of the drivers seat, the paint was very faded and the dashboard behaving intermittently..

It got driven to the scrapyard and just as it arrived at the scrapyard smoke started coming out of the back of the dashboard!!

That does look nice I have to say and having recently read an old Autocar report from 1989 the diesel was well liked.

The rear arches were it looks a bit wobby, always go there. I have 2 NOS panels for the rear arches on each side. Mine was going there, but I got rid before I did with anything with the panels. They bolt on and off and you mastic them under the window and arch. I'll put them in the spares box.

The dimness of the dash will be the bulbs blown out. There are quite a few in the back. I also have a spare dash (I think) in the loft, I'll chuck that on your spares pile...

It certainly won't have done 126k miles. They are a six digit milometer but, Tipo (and Tempra) Digital dashes zero themselves when they reach 200,000 KM, so it will have got to 124,274 miles and then gone to zero. So it's more likely done 150k miles...Weird I know...

I'll have root about in the week and see what else there is Chris and I'll let you know.

Thanks Rich.

Vin, that sounds absolutely fantastic, and much appreciated.

I've just checked the "history" I currently have, which consists of 2 hand written notes:

So... service overdue (only 4k miles, but 3 years ago) cambelt done 2011, so not due for a while and there are a few parts in the boot ... I'll retrieve those another day

I can't think what the plastic tube is they describe...will be interesting to see which bit it is...

The brake vacuum pump is visible in your engine bay pic...it's sat on the right hand side of the of the rocker cover. It is powered off the end of the camshaft...

After a while the groove on the end of the camshaft wears down until you can't stop the car anymore...the common fix at the time was to build the end of the camshaft up with weld and cut a new slot in it...It happened to the TD I had, during my sister's ownership...At the time I had a spare head and camshaft so just swapped it all over.

She didn't have it long as she wrote it off in Newcastle-under-Lyme... :-(

My dad had a 1.9TD one of these on K plate in the mid nineties with the digi dash. It was going funny on that one when it was about 6 years old, sometimes it wouldn't come on at all sometimes it would come on but really dim, sometimes it was fine.

I just remember it having a digital turbo boost guage which I thought was extremely cool 😂. Plastic tailgate on these as well if I remember right.

Me too.  I was on the bidding page too the night before, thinking 300 notes, why not.  And froze.

Woke up next day checked and arrgh!  Should've had that I heard myself mutter

Flat4Alfa ... if you decide to shift the Avantime give me a shout, we may be able to sort something out including the Tipo ;)

Just a thought but that mechanical brake vac pump, any reason it can't be replaced with an electric one?
