2CV since July 2000.

XM since October 2014.

Nippy since last month.

Very rarely does a car last longer than a year. Six months is often pretty impressive. Only two have made it past the two year mark - a Peugeot 306 DTurbo shares the honours with the 2CV. The Pug didn't make it to three years though.

I've owned The Volvo since December 2003. Back then, it never occurred to me that I'd own it for so long. I've only owned The Saab since the end of January this year, but it is shaping up to be a long-term prospect :)

VW 8 years

Austin 4 years

Disco 1 year

Cherry nearly a year

I've been meaning to sell something for ages but I'm not sure it will happen unless the landlord gets arsey.

I've been wrestling with the evil spirit my Rover is possessed with for five years now. Five years of doom! Try this for size, you humpties!

This godforsaken pile of shit-coloured shit is here to stay, it will eventually kill me, or die with me, whichever comes first.

The car I had longest, though, was a 1978 Caprice Classic, not because septic, but because it is a bloody brilliant car. I had it for sixteen years.

I'm also on the fourth Piggo 405 2.0 GTX in giffer flavour. Number one was replaced because I thought I found something better in form of a Range Rover. PHALE.

So the Rangey was replaced with number two, which was killed mercilessly in Germany and thus replaced with number three.

That one was replaced with some Japanese chod, which I thought was a good idea, but wasn't.

Japanese cars I find since irritating. So they got replaced with said number four, and the way I see it, that one is here to stay as well, because I mustard mitt that

there isn't really a better car around. This makes it almost a decade of 405 2.0 GTXes, albeit divided by four.

I also had 16 (sixteen) Granada MKIIs over the years. So despite I didn't have each particular one for very long, it is by far the car that accompanied me longest

throughout my life. If that makes sense. Maybe not to you, but it makes and awful lot of sense to me. Which is pathetic on several levels.

All other 200+ cars I hitherto owned were come and go. Many of them I only had a couple of weeks or so.

But there were the Imperials. For 12 successive years, I bought and fully restored one 1957-1963 Imperial per year and showed up at the Power Big Meet in Västeras

with one restored Imperial, and one just aquired tatty one, that was produced the following year fully restored together with the next tatty one I had acquired.

The first one was a 1961 Crown Southampton four door, so I owned this one for twelve years. The entire Imperial thing was subsequently nixed by a costly divorce,

along with the rest of my life. My original plan was to do 15 Imperials, then sell them all and buy one Facel Vega Excellence from the proceeds and be finally done

once and for all having reached Shite Zenith. Alas, not in this life I'm afraid.

I've had my phase 1 V70 about a month now.

Very happy with it.

The longest surviving car I had was the Previa I sold to hairymel.

Good old bus was that, had it a few years and it never failed an mot.

the lengths of time that i've spent with my bangers are quite short in comparison with some here-

the mini-since june 2008 (i think....)

the metro- since march 2011

the jaguar XJR- since july 2013

the rover 75- since august 2014

others that have come and gone seem to last about 9 months before getting moved on. i'm either giving it a fair chance, or just some sort of masochist.

for a motor to stop longer they either have to be something amazing or really get under my skin.

I usually keep my cars for at least 5 years but when I bought my Vauxhall Victor in Feb 14 the plan was to keep it a year and then move it on for something else I fancied.

Problem is I really like the car and it's just so reliable so I will probably keep it for another year which then means it's in historic tax class, so my man maths thinks well the car will owe me nothing so even if I get something else it could just sit around.

In just under 4 years I have moved from 1 newish car to 3 old ones which is great but I see now how people accumulate a large collection of cars.

Since July, but the fact it went straight through the mot and has never gone wrong means I'm in no rush to change. Plus after moving to a more expensive house I really can't afford to chop and change. I'll just wait until someone on here is selling something interesting or fancies a swap deal

Like Barefoot I have had one car since 1985 (the DS saloon). Unlike him I also make a loss when I keep cars.

I'm not a great one for keeping cars veeeery long, but I had my MK10 Jag for about 11 years. Was a daily for most of that time but was garaged nightly (and for about six months after it fell on my head! I had to pay someone else to fix it 'cos the thought of going back underneath it brought me out in a cold sweat!) and treated like a baby... though thrashed mercilessly most weekends.

I sold it to my stepdad who abandoned it in a bloody field and it just rotted away!

The shortest time I (as opposed to a business type deal) ever owned a car was a 1978 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow 11 which I bought from a dealer for ten grand and sold the next day to another for eleven thousand. It wasn't a 'good' car.

Ive never MOT'd the same car twice.

39 years with a car must make you the winner unless anybody else knows better?

Me a mere 32 years!

I tend to buy on impulse and regret at leisure, fix what's broken, sell at a loss and then rapidly move on to the next old heap.

A sort of serial adulterer with very low standards

Same here, but only in the last few years. After saving for a house deposit for what seemed like forever, I now spunk most of my spare cash on cars. I temper it by sticking to sub-£500 where possible, then the losses aren't huge.

The only stayer is the Metro, which I've owned for seven years, and is probably worth a few bob now. I only paid 90 quid for it and was an OMG garage find.

G-reg 827 Sterling - Oct 2008

E-reg 825 Sterling - Mar 2012

D-reg 820E - Apr 2013

N-reg 827 Coupe - Sometime in 2014

All of these I currently own, most cars I've owned have had about 1 year or so on the road, with the exception of the Merc and the Coupe. The E-reg 825 and D-reg 820E have not been on the road during my ownership (and I think the owners before me too)

You've got to be the winner! What's the secret?
