Couple of small bits needing tweaked that I'd missed but nothing major.

Progress.

The transformation from a Dolomite shaped lump of ferrous oxide with a knackered emgine to what you have now is fantastic and a credit to yourself and Mr. GingerNuttz.

Great to see the primer going on. I thought the Acclaim was a labour of love, but this older cousin is another level! Cap doffed to the pair of you.

I spotted this post from Captain 70s from 2015 from this very thread. What's next on the list?! 😅

Spitfire steelies and Lucas Square 8s still on the shopping list. Not top of the priorities list though, want to get it running and driving on the road first.

It now has a Mk3 Spitfire spec engine, the best of the Triumph SC lumps.

The only real difference to that picture is it'll be a different shade of green and won't have the black sills/C pillar.

Kind of mad to see it all a single colour for the first time in several years. 😂

Gonna need bigger wheels to cope with all that horsepower under the bonnet 😂

1500 Spitfire wheels are a half inch wider than stock Dolly wheels. When it goes for tyres I may go for 175/70s rather than 155/80s.

If I win the lottery it can get Pirelli Cinturatos at a mere £130 a corner.

It's probably going to have 65bhp odd, utter madness... I'll need to get it on a rolling road and see what it's putting out once it's got a few miles on it.

Do not put that car on a rolling road nor have that wee engine above 5K rpm.

Untested grounds with a thrust bearing shim and knowing your luck it'll drop the washer and muller the bottom end 😂

Just potter about like an old man and it'll be reet

I've just took a pair of square 8s off. You can have them for postage

Most of that is the Volvo's own interior which can't go back in until it stops filling with water.

@jaypee kindly dropped off the water pump courtesy of @juular. Now just waiting for a day that isn't freezing/raining to fit it...

The Dolomite 1500SE had Spitfire wheels from the factory and looked really good.

1-11-500x281.jpg.d0962ec46d7cebb301b193b2176d46a1.jpg

It was a strange special edition but it was done right at the end of production so I suspect it was cobbled together with bits they had lots of left over and we're using them up. So Spitfire wheels, Sprint spoiler and wooden door cappings from the HL and above but square headlights and the flat dashboard from the base models. So imagine this in green.

Should look good and make a nice change from all the Sprint wheels out there, of which I too am guilty. If I was doing it again I would probably try something different but they've been on there 25 years now so they're staying.

The SE is a funny old thing. A run out special but the grey interior and veneer on the dash is unique to that model.

I was lucky enough to see the sole surviving 1300SE prototype at a car show in Dumfries many years ago.

1500SE spec but with the 1300 engine, finished in Denim metallic blue and with a vinyl roof and bumper underriders.

"The dumbest thing you've done so far". Because that'll give you a little leeway just in case.

As getting it there is the easy bit. Getting back will be the challenge.

Maybe copy Derek's example and find THE rattiest Transit beavertail you can find to fetch it back?

It'll be duct tape and pound shop spray cans from here on out

New core plug since it blew out when the car froze a year ago.1650539764152.thumb.JPEG.1bca34ee56b78c478f7e919a2267af45.JPEG

Shiny rocker cover to contain all that horsepower, shame the rest of the engine looks like arse 😂

I think the block is black under 2 years of dust. 😂

Today I fashioned a noose from Dolomite door rubber. It didn't work.

However. LIGHTS.

  • captain_70s changed the title to Rusty Triumphs in Scotland - MY OIL IS COFFEE HOW U FIX? - 23/04/22
Posted

Basically today went as well as most days working on the Dolly.

Turned up to aid in reassembly. While fitting a fuel pump noticed the oil seemed very brown.

Checked the dipstick, brown and over full.

Drained the sump, full off coffee.

(It was around this point my parent's messaged to say my Grandad had died, cementing the day's tone somewhat).

Essentially the coolant freezing way back when has fucked it. We'd run it in with straight water intending to flush the system anyway, it got forgotten as bodywork and the Acclaim ended up taking up the workshop for ages. The coolant froze and popped out a core plug. Since then the car has been sat sans radiator/coolant until the last few days
Either it's raised the head slightly and fucked the gasket, which showed signs of coming apart in several areas upon removal, or the block is cracked internally. If the former it's a £15 fix. If the latter then the block is scrap with less than 2hrs run time on it.

The bearings also probably won't have taken massively kindly to being lubricated with 30w oil diluted with a litre of water. Although it's hardly been run since coolant was put in it...

We did at least get the front lights and grille fitted up as well as some of the stainless trims. The paint is ace, photos don't do the colour much justice...

These are easy to do hg on. I did one ffs and I am shit. Need to check the right gasket for the engine, recessed or non-recessed.  Hardest bit was getting the head off.  Make sure you label everything, work clean. You can do it.
