Van de Pomme was actually loaded like this...

20-Sep-22 - C15 loaded in Lincolnshire.jpg

... with lots of goodies from a farm in Lincolnshire, that used to have a mile long narrow gauge railway to haul potatoes.

14 x wooden railway sleepers (two foot gauge)

10 x wooden railway sleepers (18" gauge)

1 x concrete railway sleeper (two foot gauge) from 1914

10 x vintage potato chitting trays

1 x bundle of vintage tools (pitchfork, draw hoe, trenching shovel)

2 x new garden forks

2 x new spade handles

1 x roll of carpet

1 x can of wood preserver

All the items were weighed before loading and the total was well within a C15's payload. All items were strapped and secured in case of emergency stops.

Van de Pomme drove very nicely on the way back and turned 214k miles just before I got home. As always, I am very pleased with its capacity, capability and frugality.

Sounds like quite the haul!

We really should do a back to back comparison of the Caddy and C15 one day as they're so similar yet different vehicles.  Think it would be quite interesting.

maybe valve clearances aren't right,

The more I think about it, the more this makes a lot of sense.

There was absolutely no knocking from the engine when being spun over on the drill, there's nothing visibly wrong with anything that can be found, and theres no evidence of contact anywhere.  But if one of the exhaust valve clearances had closed up to the point that the valve wasn't closing, there would be a horrible knocking sound every time that cylinder fires.  Knocking when running, but not knocking at any other time.

Hmmmmmmm.

I didn't think to check the clearances before we removed the heads; it was only something which came up chatting over it on the way home. It may be worth pouring some paraffin, diesel, or similar into the ports to see how much leaks past the valves - this will obviously not show a valve which was being held open by the valvegear, but if a valve cannot close fully for whatever reason, there'd be effectively a massive valve gap on that rocker, hence clatter (and it does seem more like top end to my ears, albeit only based on the video and not in real life).

Most of my photos from the day are on film so will be a little while before we see them.

There were a heck of a lot of Metros there today!

IMG_20220925_130503.thumb.jpg.56f129e8b2b7effbfbeea474653db282.jpg

Always a good event though.  A lot of single marque shows can be a bit samey I find, but given how diverse BL's portfolio was this is always interesting.

I'd honestly forgotten this even existed in convertible form.

An SD1 is always worth a photo too, and always looks great.

What an excellent day at a show that seems to get bigger and better every year. I photographed pretty much everything so I'll just share a few highlights.

Once again @Slowsilver helped me today  with some winter preparation for our cars that are going to be stored for the winter. It was a busy afternoon moving cars about.

We took the BMW 735i to storage as it is being collected in the morning.

Much tyre pumping was done.

We had to move the E reg Visa, Trevi and BiTurbo to get out the Gamma. Last time I used the Gamma I forgot to switch on the electric fan and it spat out water while sitting idling.  We refilled it with 33% antifreeze and all seemed fine, but there was not enough petrol to give it a proper test drive.

Following past rodent damage I prepared bait boxes and put them round the shed. While I did this slowsilver checked the antifreeze in the 308 GT4, E Type and 2 Daimler Sovereigns.

One section was sweep and the cars put away.

More to do next week........

Parting with old friends!

The Visa 17RD we have had for 7+ years.  This car was very much duplication of the other Visa 17RD we have had for the last 13 years. I still have an unnatural liking for Citroen Visas, which I first owned 20 years ago and sold them new from a Citroen dealer in 1987.

We have had the BMW 735i SE 14+ years. Following Mrs6C's purchase of an E46 we joined the BMW Car club and our local group leader was a strong promoter of the E32 7 series. I was sucked into E32 ownership and valentine's day 2008 we placed a blind eBay bid on this 735i and won. Lots of memories followed, I have driven it at a steady 125 mph on a German Autobahn and taken it round the Nürburgring  ring at full tilt following my friend in a Mercedes 450 SEL.  The longest single non stop drive of any car I have driven was in this BMW 735i SE, 7 1/4 hours Milton Keynes to Edinburgh on a Friday after work and I still felt comfortable on arrival. It will be missed but I have a 1971 BMW 3.0 S which I plan to use more.

Both are sold to a Film car supply company and will be available for you to rent for your filming needs!
