Can anyone point out the pitfalls of buying this?

Its HPI clear, in budget and a nice colour. I expect its as bland as the Micrashed to drive.

Main pitfall:

Not a Pride

looks a clean enough old bus- if you can write off the cost of it should it wallop you with a bill, go for it:)

If I can get the seller to luz 12 months test on it for the asking price and it does me 12 to 24 months I'll be happy.

Looks like a pretty safe bet I would have thought but if you want to save 500 sheets and don't mind a few IE 60k more miles KM cars of Morecambe have a 52 registered example which doesn't look too foul,

Can't do link as haven't figured out how to use Asus tablet thingy yet but its on eBay at the moment.

Not heard anything bad about these other than them being dull and a bit on the flimsy side inside and out, as one might expect of a Kia of this vintage.  I have a vague memory of being told that these** that have the engine that needs regular oil changes to prevent the top end sludging up and making a mess of thing, but I can't remember the exact details so take that as rumour rather than fact.

**I might be thinking of the earlier ones, or 1.5 Protons.  I am useless at this, sorry.

My mate had 168k on his 02-plate when the cambelt went about three years ago, IIRC he put another engine in it and still runs it.

Dull but worthy.

Looks dynamic and adventurous. Like a real go getter.

But with thick lensed spectacles and a limp.

I remember reading a review of these when they came out with the headline 'Her name is Rio, and she's crap' and it quoted Kia's PR guy basically admitting that people buy them because they can't afford anything else 😂

Therefore sounds ideal, as you were.

Dull but worthy.

Sums up my dream car that. Plus with the extra space I'll be able to use my £12 Homebase Leyland closing down sale wheelbarrow to move TWO dead bodies now instead of just the one.

point out the pitfalls

It's not an early droop-nosed Rio in that putrid green/yellow, with wheels wot look like Fiesta Mk3 steelies but aren't.

SRSLY though Marty, this red one looks a good 'un.

For under a grand it's a good value motor if it's as advertised, but it's real value is maybe about £750, if you know what I mean.

It's probably due a cam belt (due to age) if it hasn't been done.

PS, There's some bullshit in the advert:

POPULAR CAR

That's bollocks!

My initial reaction was that it was £500 to expensive then I saw the mileage and the 10 service stamps (one per year).

That car could be a right royal bargain and it's a Kia so you win any which way.

Hillman Imp drives a nice looking Jaguar and he paid much less for it than you are thinking about shelling out for this, the dullest of dull cars.

They are desparately slow, but feel much slower than they really are. Please take a really long test drive with lots of long motorway inclines before you spend your money.

They are shit on fuel for their size and performance, and parts are ridiculously expensive for a budget car, but they're pretty reliable, if quite impossibly dull.

Well it's not this kind of Rio!

Very close, but no:

You say this to a man with a 998cc Micra. I am no stranger to the world of Slow. Beleive me when I get into the wifes 2.5 Tonne C8 with its 110 BHP it feels like

It looks vile, will go pink immediately upon purchase and will also give the impression that you are 75 years of age and drive everywhere at 19 1/2 miles an hour. I can see nothing to commend it.

Enjoy the Kia love.

Oh cock, I now have a headache from looking at the damn thing. Arse.

The only downside I can see is that if you buy it, you will have to beat the laydeez off with a shitty stick.

More like the laydeezboys.

Oh yeah, not sure if these later ones have it, but the original shape Rio I'm sure had thr indicators on the right. That would mark it as a clear WINNERMOBILE.

Like my Shuma on the proper side

YES this is full of win! Sure they run the same engine as my Shuma, based on old 323 running gear. It will be due a cambelt, but may well have had it with the FSH. If you can take a code reader, mine likes to pop up the engine management light, not so much now as the code for a O2 sensor turned out it needed a MAF. Back arches rot a bit, make sure the are cleaned out well and undersealed as there is no arch liners. Have you bought it yet??  :-P

Mrs_Stanky has one which she puts 5k miles a year on, it leaks a bit of oil from the poorly-fitting cam sensor on the side of the block and has a bit of a hesitation/misfire which goes away if you drive it like you stole it but otherwise its not a bad little thing. It usually potters around the doors, but has managed a trip to see Muvva_Stanky in Ipswich and to Birmingham twice without issue.

I've found service parts to be pretty reasonable, and from doing some research* I think it has a small capacity version of Mazda's B series engine which also features in the MX-5 so it has sporting* pedigree*

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_B_engine#B3

This also reckons its non-interference so just drive it til the belt snaps (as I intend to). Its not got a lot of puff above 65mph but pulls pretty well from 0-45mph. Also the boot is quite big, considering its quite a small car. We get 38mpg out of pottering about, so shouldn't be that hard to crack 40+ MPG on a run.

Also, ours is the squalid 'L' spec so doesn't have a rev counter, just a massive speedo. We paid £650 for an 82k '04 plate one about 2 years ago and SWMBO quite likes it. Its not too bad to work on either, oh, and just for your info - the rear seat squab (is that the bit your bum goes on? well, thats what I mean) DOES NOT FOLD UP. It can unbolt, or you can fold the back down on to it, but attempting to fold the bit your bum goes on into an upright position will result in the metal brackets snapping, as they have in ours. I'm still unsure whether this will result in IMMEDIATE DEATH for backseat passengers in the event of a crash, and keep meaning to get a replacement one, as the brackets couldn't be welded without setting fire to the seat foam in a major way.

Overall, 6.87356/11.7 - GR8 4 GFFRS. Would buy again.
