Little (Bedford) Rascal

Been offered a Bedford Rascal with no tax or test for £150 in Edinburgh, I'm not sure if I'm going to go for it so thought I'd offer it up to any other shiters in case someone is in desperate need of a Rascal.

 

 

 

 

 

 

It has a starter related problem where you turn the key to the first position and it tries to start but doesn't fire, it does the same when you turn the key to the start position. Apparently it bump starts but it was raining, it had a flat tyre and we couldn't be bothered trying.

We might go back with some fresh fuel and try again etc

 

Anyone want to chip in for a communal shiters van?

I think at that price it's a no brainer. I'm sure there's some parts on them made out of unobtanium now, so it'd probably break and weigh in for more, though that'd be a shame.

Bear in mind, with no mot, that because they are so narrow nearly all the body comes into a " prescribed area " for mot corrosion.

My mate had an identical rascal to that back in the mid to late eighties and had the bullbar option fitted to his..

 

If it has a set of stolen London transport bus seats in the back either side and a pioneer stereo with speaker holes cut out as big as the doors panels then it must be the same one

I'd actually enjoy that as a winter beater, just for comedy value!  Sadly it's too far away/I have a lovely Volvo estate/I can't take on something without T&T.  Hope it finds a good home.

 

FR registration would be issued in Preston, so it might have been local to me once.

That's a fair point 30cm inwards from both sides pretty much leaves a wee strip in the middel!

I'd be all over this if it wasn't in edinburgh - My works vehicle is a suzuki carry (EFI!) These little vans are amazing capacity for the wheelbase and surprisingly nippy! 

 

Boring as fuck to drive and massive oversteer but hey!

There's a camper conversion of these, called a Bambi I think. I've a feeling it's got a longer body though.

Bambi camper was built on a chassis cab, but Danbury (iirc) did a pop-top job on the van. 2 berth, and cosy at that!

thinking about it I remember a rusty Bedford van just like that delivering the school dinners when I was in primary school... they used to make them fresh on site then at some point in the early ninetys the kitchen was converted to a computer room and filled with bbc basic computers. from then on Every morning the at about 11:30 the van would rock up and deliver yellow boxes of disappointment. Tepid reheated food that was barely fit for human consumption. Shortly afterwards I started to get a packed lunch...
