Ooh Ducati.... never had a Duke but fell off one once!

It belonged to the bike shop I worked at and I had taken it home, fell off on a roundabout on the way to work the next morning. The sprocket oil seal had come out and coated the back end/tyre in oil which I discovered as I was sliding along the road on my arse!

Pulled the Ducati out of the back of the garage at long last must have been there for well over a year. Charged up the battery, fuel on, choke on, and it started second turn of the starter

But got to sell it as moving. Looking for around £2,500, as some twonk (NOT ME) painted, or rather coated, the engine casings in gold and silver paint really really badly.

25,000 miles, great runner, but sadly I've no time to do the paint stripping.

That is bloody lovely. Always fancied one of these to go with my stable of quirky Italian thoroughbreds. Something about carbs appeals.  Must get round to getting my license!!

You must certainly do the test and  get your licence. Riding around East London on an LML is an ideal way of proving you can ride.

Will put it in for an MOT this week, as a quick ride round the block reminded me how nice this runs and rides. Service history shows it had new belts on less than 500 miles ago. Can't believe I have ridden it so few miles.

I've a few hours spare so will take off the clutch cover and see how hard it is to take the grotty gold paint off

Evening gents, went  on a little road trip to collect some bikeshite on Sunday, being a self confessed CZ nut I just couldn't resist when four of the things turned up for sale less than 30 mins my place. I had already been to see them earlier in the week and sealed the deal, so went back to collect them as arranged. Took my son and grandson for the muscle , on the promise of breakfast at their choice of venue. Fleet services M3 south bound to be precise. Cheap labour as I had neglected to tell them that one of said bikes was in pieces in the loft of the sellers house!

Should taken some pics of the extraction, but we were a bit pressed for time as I thought that we would need two trips in my trusty van, but as you can see from the pics that I did take we managed to get all four (two  complete bikes) and two in bits all in one go......

So 3 X 175 bikes 1977,1977 & 1975 vintage and 1 X 125 1988 year plus a lot of spares, they are all still in the van because the garage is full, currently negotiating with the wife for extra storage in her potting shed. The bikes could be in the van for some time I think.

I rode  my Ducati 900SS to the MOT place and it passed with a few advisories. Only two of which should have been noted, as the rear pads are fine.

First time it's been ridden since around October 2017, and I had forgotten what a lovely bike it is to ride. There is nothing like a v-twin (or is this an L-twin?) for the noise, even though this is on standard exhausts, and the lovely surge of power.

Shame I have to sell it, as it seems that bog standard ones are few and far between

Erm, so this apparently isn't a joke or something from Transformers. Yamaha now sell a silly three wheeler thing called the Niken. WTF?!

/\ I like those!  The trouble is the MT09 (which it's based on) is cheaper, lighter and faster.

Niken's are great, nowt silly about them, I had a brief spin on one early last year and it felt uncrashable compared to my MT09.

Grrrr.... this is a pet hate of mine. L twin is some pretentious affection which Ducati seem to be forcing journalists to use to try and give them some sort of USP (is it because  their rivals BMW seem to be associated exclusively with the  flat twin?).

Moto Guzzi also use 90 degree V twins and see no reason to call them anything other than V's as God intended.

The wind shield must knock about 15mph off, but it got to a steady (indicated) 50mph without any drama. Going down the gears quickly was a bastard, basically nothing except all kinds of false neutrals, a real one, and then first gear eventually.

Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it. Looks weird, rides like a dream.

According to Up To Speed Ducati called it the L twin as they were trying to take on Hardley Movingson and supply bikes to the CHP....

Edit. The CHiPs hopeful was a 1200 V4 which ended up being to powerfull for the current tyre technology , the L twin came later in response to Honda's all conquering 750

I love my V-twins, or whatever the manafacturers want to designate the engine layout.

Shame the SV650 I had at the time was at work so could not include it in the line up photo.

Incidentally, I was riding over the Grossglockner pass in 2018 when it was closed to allow the Yamaha Niken press launch riders to come up to the top. The noise of scraping footpegs on a hairpin as each rider came round was great. All looked very, very stable.

This is a bit of grim reading. My promise to myself of one day I'll come over and watch some may come to late  Is there anything I'm missing trying to find cheap a ferry across if I did aim for one next year?

TLDR Road racing under pressure due to escalating costs of hosting events.

I live about ten miles from the circuit, and am I big fan of road racing. However if it rains I won't head down the road because experience tells me most of the racing will be delayed or cancelled. Therefore I'll be stuck in a hedge somewhere, soaked through for no reason. I agree with their actions for safety reasons, but like I say no point heading over to see nothing.

This is a massive problem because the club relies almost entirely on spectator fees to cover costs.

The last two years the weather hasn't been great and spectator numbers have been low. Added to which the club (allegedly) hasn't been managed that well, and suddenly they are £200k (or more) in debt, including owing cash prizes to last year's winners and without the money in the bank to front this year's meeting.

What really doesn't help is that local council / government are only really interested in the NW200, and many of the local residents are opposed to the UGP.

If the event misses a couple of years it will be incredibly difficult to get support / permission to close the roads and run the meeting.

Another big issue is that club level road racing is in danger of being wiped out. Many young riders have a chance to learn the craft at slower / shorter tracks before heading over to the Isle of Man. You really want people to have done a season on the local road racing scene before going near the IOM......I would argue that hitting the TT with only circuit racing experience is an accident waiting to happen.

I'd opine that the TT looks much nicer to ride in many respects than quite a few other road racing courses, especially any of the Irish ones that feature 40 odd bikes riding in the pissing rain (the TT doesn't normally run in such conditions) or indeed the Southern 100 which is much narrower.

D to the P. What should I do with  my old motorbike? It's a 92 CBR 600, it still works, having been in use until last May but very well worn with knackered plastics, flakey wheels, and 75000 on the clocks (which are cracked). Do I weigh it in or is there any sort of demand for parts? It doesn't really owe me anything but I don't want to miss an opportunity to make a few quid on the bits.

Always a market for such bikes in London. It sounds just like my last CBR600, but that was a 97 model, and that sold very easily.
