The DVLA actually list some of the more desirable NI plates on their site now, they change the list once a month , I think. There doesn't seem to be any age limits on what you can put them on, so maybe the old not making a car look newer than it is doesn't apply to NI numbers ( because so few people would know?) .

That makes sense - since DVLNI in Coleraine was shut down a few years back and all NI plates now go through Swansea, I wouldn't be surprised if that's indeed the case... I suppose over here used cars are still bought and sold according to the year of manufacture, whereas GB ads might just use 'P-reg Mondeo' as a shorthand for the year. Hence having to be prescriptive about whenever that can and can't be done. Quite possibly it's an original GB car with a 'cherished' NI plate that's now ended up in Belfast.

Number plates make my head hurt.

This looks a nice area - where is it?

It's a little place called Aulan, which is in the hills to the West of Sisteron. Lovely area.

....a DLVA check on the plate AAZ10 brings up that its first registration date was May 1990. But AAZ is a Belfast-issued series that replaced the *XI plates from 1993 on (I owned AAZ1248, also a red VW as it happens).

Now, my understanding is that cherished plates can't be assigned to a car to make it look newer than it actually is - although it is (or was?) perfectly legal to bring a GB plated car over to Northern Ireland and re-register it with a current NI series plate (I was offered a grim 'new' UEZ series plate when re-registering my Cortina estate with DVLNI, after bringing it back over from Glasgow - which I declined).

So I'm wondering whether this Scirocco just so happened to get AAZ10 at the DVLNI office as the next plate in the current series as the luck of the draw - but I'm pretty sure that all the lowball and otherwise 'tasty' NI numbers have long since been cherry-picked at source and sold on at auction, and so never see general issue....

I wonder if "LAZ 10" has been issued - a plate for fans of Italian Serie A football.

Local car too.

Also saw a full giffer spec Holden UC Sunbird hatch, original owner I assume.

This moves, but only around a yard.

That Allegro's last MOT expired in 2014.

It has the mighty 1.0 engine.

He's a big unit, look where the driver's seat headrest is, I didn't know P6 seats went back that far.

Is there someone in the back seat behind him?

My Partner's sister has a Seicento Sporting in bright yellow too, so it's traditional to take pictures of them whenever we see one and send them to her.  Her's is an 'S' reg.  This one is much newer:

Definitelynotshite from the other day.  Alfa Spider.  Can't remember if this is a 2 litre or 3 litre one.  Apparently there are a couple around Canterbury that get spotted fairly regularly:

Very tidy Mk1 Mondeo in Llanelli this morning. Still complete with original dealer plates and stickers. Looks like a one owner car.

Some really interesting* spots today.

Didn't get a picture of the Allegro Vanden Plas around Kingsnorth (Ashford) or the Mk1 Fiesta in beige (other side of Ashford) as I was driving at the time.

Anyhow:

Astra in sorry state but nevertheless starting to become increasingly rare.  A particularly miserable 1.7TD...

And a WTAF is THIS?!  Looks like it's based on a Micra?  It has the name 'WILL' on the front badge and the same on the back but I couldn't find anything about the make online...

All in Hastings, early afternoon today.

I think they'd all be grey imports, the few that have appeared over here, as it looks like they were Japan-only.  I had no idea about the whole WiLL range of products and online shop though.  Fair play for them giving it a go, sounds a bit like that period about 15 years ago when Tesco decided to start selling Skodas.

I passed a house on the way from home to Hastings today (via Cranbrook and Hawkhurst from Pluckley way) that had several early 2000s MGs on the driveway in fair shape.  Anyone know anything?

Three from me:

first, where I park up when I'm visiting my friends with the mental neighbours, there was a 900 Carlsson:

then at Tesco on Sunday morning was this mintola giffer Cavalier - original dealer plates etc. I think my mum knows someone who's friends with the owner.

Then finally, here's a slightly better picture of the megashite Campagnola:
