Best way to sell a car? (without weighing it in)

Hi gang,

I need to sell the inlaws Citroen C3 and have had it on Gumtree for a couple of weeks. So far the only responses have been from canvassers who want me to sell it on their website- not one genuine punter! I don't really want to go down the e.bay route, does anybody have any ideas on the best way of getting a sale on this little Cit?

Email everybody at work, your local newspaper, although when I sold my first car once I put it on autotrader the phone didn't stop ringing.

AutoTrader or perhaps the FCF? Pistonheads used to be great but I think they charge now.

Not if you simply register as a user as far as I know.

I'd autotrader something like this, TBH. Just check the price is about right alongside others, and get it nice and clean with good pictures for the web listing. It's not cheap now, about £40-odd IIRC, but the coverage is good, and you don't seem to get as many idiots.

Edit: Pistonheads is a tenner.

At the risk of becoming public enemy number one have you checked what webuyanycrap would offer?

Disposed of my old avensis through them last year and the whole experience was not too bad, know theres plenty of horror stories about them but I really couldn't fault the branch I dealt with.

I'd agree with Autotrader being the best. Shame about the Gumtree thing. My next door neighbour sold his 06 plate mondeo which he used as a taxi with no problems so I guess it works for some and not others.

On a side note, webumanyone.com offered my £555 for my mint 03 plate 62k mile, 2 owner Astra Coupe. I typed it in for a laugh after seeing their new advert on the telly.

Is that not a sign it's priced too high?

eBay motors classified ad is £15 for a month - worth a try?

sell it to me

^^^

Go on then, which one of you's the smartass?

Sell it to cms206 whats on here sometimes. Easiest car sale I've ever done...

To be honest my little (and quite recent) experience with Gumtree is that if something isn't free or as near as, it won't attract much interest at all.

Well its £2250 for an 04 C3 with 51k on the clock. Good nick too. I think that's about average after looking at autotrader.

For £15 you can get it listed for 30 days on eBay - but you will get a whole load of stupid offers at the start of your 30 days from traders looking for a bargain (and a desperate seller). Then it'll go quiet for 20 days, and then you might get a sniff from a genuine buyer when your advert reaches the first page.

Is Autotrader still a 7 day listing? I found Autotrader very expensive, and gumtree was just a total waste of time as mentioned above.

About a month ago I tried selling my Almera on Auto Trader. Cost £36 for internet only coverage. No calls, despite dropping the price 2 times.

I might have been asking too much for it - I didn't want to give it away.

£36 for internet only is well expensive innit... thats more than ebay charge and everyone knows what thieving wankers they are. At least they offer some sort of ‘system’ to facilitate a sale though, AT offer fugg all except a guarantee to lose your ad amongst hundreds of “£99 REAL PRICE £4750†spamming twats.

a relative was offered £100 by a garage for her astra ! it had 10 months tax on it

IShe rang a scrap yard and they offered £170 and she could bosh the tax in !

what size of engine was it? That makes a huge difference to the value of ten month's tax.

Garages really do take the mickey sometimes when it comes to trade ins.

Autotrader are bastards alright but I've always sold cars when I've put them in there. It's the place that normal people go to buy normal cars. If you're selling a moscovich 410 then maybe not but if you're selling a C3 then it's probably the right place. If you're selling a volume car then you need to put something in the advert that will make it stand out amongst the 10,000 other ones. Normally I find putting it about 100 quid less than anyones with the similiar mileage in the area does the job.

Chuck me over some details and location Tim, my sister has been on about replacing het ka for a while now.

That sort of thing really winds the shit out of me

It's even worse here in Yanky land...it's quite refreshing looking at UK ads by comparison - especially when the cars are a fraction of the cost too!

I'd print out a for sale sign and put it in the window - you'll be surprised how many people get in touch (in my experience at least).

It's had a sign in the window for the last couple of days, hopefully that will stir up some interest. Frustratingly the next door neighbour was in the market for a small car and has just bought a 54 reg pug 206, I had no idea until the pug appeared on her drive- gutted!

Anyway, for those who are interested here are some details.
