The dash at night

Why not take a photo while stationary?

It's much easier to get a clear photo that way. It's also a wee bit safer too. Or does your speedometer lie as well?

Alas, I cannot contribute to this thread yet, as my 205's instrument bulbs are dead as doornails. I may look into replacing them at the weekend.

I quite like the yellow glow on the dash on my recently pressed back into service e46

although its a bit odd as the info screen and all other dash lighting is orange and the gear knob illumination is red 🤔20211103_175451.thumb.jpg.083272d701e09d7536e6d5ef20c27f67.jpg

95 Rover R8... glowing orange like your grandma's hearth.

Also note the rare appearance of the fully lit clock, which doesn't illuminate at all 80% of the time.

Didn't set the trip counter to read 7890. Poor effort.

that would have taken way more planning than I am capable of :)

I think the E46 dash is pretty much peak BMW in terms of attractiveness, usefulness and the traditional driver orientation. After this BMW entered its baroque period with the unsightly E90 and E60 interiors.

Edit: Just realised, that‘s an M3 isn‘t it?

yes, I am not sure if all the e46s light up yellow or just the m3. Agree it was the last of that traditional BMW dash layout

My 325i E46 (no M badges anywhere) had yellowy-orange dials, it's in this thread probably a year or two ago.

@Sunny Jimhas it now, maybe he could put a comparison pic up?

I've never had an M3 but I'm sure the M3 isn't limited to 4,000 rpm.

I'm guessing it's a 320d, possibly 330d, but in Msport trim.

the redline ends up at the actual red section , amber sections disappear as oil temp reaches correct level :)

I see, I never knew that!

Clever thinking, BMW.

I have never had it limited to 4 at cold start, normally its 6 I think. I assume the lower limit comes on in colder climates. General consensus on the m3 forums is that whilst the lights are a good idea they do go out quickly when the oil temp gauge is still showing reasonably cold oil

But what about the BMW MPGs needle. I love making that thing dance around on BMW's. It doesn't encourage the eco driver in me, instead I'll coast up to a junction then floor it just to watch it fly from max to min and back to max again (1999MY 528i, miss that beasty)

I think the Ferrari 456 had a similar visual warning to prevent high revs until the engine had reached normal operating temperature.

I like the floating needle effect on the W220 dials but I have to admit to a preference for the monumental W140 dash. Here‘s one I found on Google.

This era S Class also had the most amazing centre console ever. Look at this:

I would always be feathering the throttle and trying to make it everywhere in 5th gear on my E46 and only when I'm alone on the big open road or overtaking would I mash the throttle. In those cases I wouldn't be looking at the needle!

The combination of edge and back lighting on the speedometer and tachometer really looks nice.

It actually looks almost normal at night...not so much in daylight.

Ok ok, you win. I thought the Croma had it sewn up until I saw this.

Updated one of my Merc S123 now that I've finally fixed the illumination for the switchgear above the heater controls.
