I think it'll be very close to

£18K

I've known two people who had SsangYongs (the big jeep thing with the Merc Dizzler, can't remember what it's called - "Oh it's a Mercedes Dizzler, they go on for evar and evarrrrr".... )

They both broke.

Expensively.

If I was in the market for a pseudo-SUV at the shite-ier end of the scale, I'd go with a Dacia Duster.

With the reknowned reliability of a Renult dci engine under the bonnet...

Someone had already registered ssangyong.co.uk for an ebay shop so they just bought ssangyonggb.co.uk instead

At least they actually explain what the car is, rather than shots of a group of grinning 20 year olds (one of whom is black, we're not racists) driving to the surfing competition accompanied by a song from whatever band NME was wanking over that week

Imagine spending £18k on a Ssangyong. I'd rather fund the same amount of Go Compare ads.

Posted

Agree with all the comments about depreciation, SANGWONGS R SHIT M8, etc, but I actually quite like the advert. Wanky, expensive car ads just tend to piss me off.

Posted

Indeed, it is just fabulously shit and the perfect opposite to the wanky Kia or Hyundai with some bint singing in a car with her band which is truly fecking me off at the moment.

As for SSangyong, I thought that everyone had given up on them years ago. The Musso and Rectum were relatively common on our roads but have ominously disappeared well before their 10th birthday.

"This is a car. It's better than these cars. It costs this much."

It's exactly what I've always wanted from advertising. There's no mention of aspirational lifestyles, or safety, or performance or even economy, perfect!

I take it this is your kind of advert VA. (Triple win: 1. App(/e)alling motor, 2. Shit video quality 3. The sheer cheek of it).

Laughed like a drain when i first saw this ad,reminded me of episodes of bullseye with jim bowen when he revealed TONIGHTS STAR PRIZE and a yugo 45 appeared on the stage with its hazards on,Crap ad for a crapper car,who the hell would find that depreciating heap desirable and at 18k the price is even funnier.

What's the point on spending any money on the advert no-ones actually going to buy one.

Posted

Haven't seen the ad but what are we complaining about? If they're really shit and lose loads of money then they'll be right in our radar in a short space of time. Long may this sort of thing continue.

Indeed. The advert for the Seat Ibiza pisses me off - the wailing Katy fucking Perry soundtrack etc. Clearly aimed at pumped up 21 year old Ladz with tribal tattoos, so I'm surprised they don't have such an individual driving it - probably over the limit the morning after a banging night clubbing in Mansfield.

Don't understand what everybody's complaining about sounds perfect for this place.

Bit much when Kia and Hyundai are the 'expensive' established brands being undercut by a johnny come lately though. But I suppose if you're up for a Kia you are not going to that bothered about buying a Ssanyoung either.

Just what until they start selling Great Walls over here, will make that ad look like a masterpiece.

As an Asian car buyer, I'd say that Hyundai and KIA are churning out consistently decent quality products these days. They've even started to get the styling sorted out too!

The likes of Ssangyong and Daewoo etc. churn out regurgitated parts bin specials from less reliable sources, normally with a total lack of aesthetics.

I can't see a Hyundai or KIA buyer naturally considering a Ssangyong product.

I'm all for bringing the Chinese stuff over - but like the Ssangyong or Daewoo products they are totally over priced shite by comparison to KIA or Hyundai.

They already do.

Fortnight ago I was at my sisters. When I was out with my Brother in Law we passed a 'Great Wall' dealer - it was near Ripley in Derbyshire.

Has anyone actually taken the time to have a close look at the Korando? For the money they're actually bloody good value - which is the main message of the ad. For the most part they're more powerful and more torquey than all of their immediate competitors and have solid towing credentials. I'm not suggesting they are the most dynamic cars on the road because well, they're not. Dead steering and ferocious understeer are probably the worst bits. And yes the dash is a bit on the dated side alongside the latest iX35 or Sportage. But they start at £16,995. They also have a bloody good warranty. The more image conscious buyers won't consider a SsangYong, but there are people out there who will go for the value option. It's a bit early to say about depreciation because it was only launched last year. Yes it'll be worth less than a Sportage in three years, but they cost less to start with. They're all a hell of a lot better than they were back in the 90's. They're decently screwed together which is why they are happy to put an unlimited mileage warranty on them. Even Rodius taxi drivers get an unlimited mileage warranty. Probably best not to get onto Rodius though!

As you've probably guessed I work for a SsangYong dealer! We have Subaru and Isuzu as well and we thought that SsangYong would sit quite nicely underneath the Subaru's expensive prices. We've only had the franchise a month or so but we were quite impressed with the investments that have been made. Mahindra bought 70% of SsangYong last year, so there is plenty of money for future products. A new British import company was set up as well and has done well to rapidly grow the dealer network. SsangYong GB's MD (Paul Williams) is the man who took a great deal of credit for getting Kia to where they are now in the UK. And for a small UK company to be on their second national television ad campaign of the year is also an indication of how serious they are. It's something Subaru are dead set against doing. So, it's early days, but I'd like to think there is a good future for it here.

Oddly enough, that was called the Korando too...

Remember that nautical superstition about never giving a ship the same name as one that sank? Obviously, SY haven't.

I thought that was the Musso?

Posted

Musso was the 5-dr estate type, the original Korando was the Jeep type thing.

Good luck to 'em; the budget brands either have to push upmarket, or fade away.

I'm just waiting for this to happen:

OK, so the Ssangyong is a couple of grand less than its rivals, the advert is cheap and doesn't feature Katy Perry or a Mansfield youth with a tribal tattoo. All good things.

However, and this is something that has always confused the hell outta me, why would anyone with enough of a brain to scrape together £18k then go and blow the lot on a bloody Ssangyong? It's the zero intelligence option. Ok, £18k won't get you a Land Rover / Honda / BMW new, but it'll get you one thats a couple of years old and immaculate.

An immaculate, 2 year old, low mileage Freeloader 2 can be had for less than £18k... Why buy a Ssangyong?

You're absolutely right. But it's this strange mentality that we have to thank for the existence of the FSO Polonez, Lada Riva, Skoda Estelle, Dacia Denem, and the like, that we all enjoy seeing around today. I always find it hard to believe that someone saw fit to shell out several grand for the contents of Benno's driveway when they were new!
