Best use of gaffa tape?

Recommended Posts

Am currently using gaffa tape ripped with my teeth to keep tax disc in window. Was going to buy a great looking Lancia branded holder but didn't and saved a tenner (plus postage and packaging costs).

I have lot's more tape (and teeth) so thinking of starting an aftermarket gaffa based accessories company. Would be grateful for examples of how you've enhanced your car with gaffa. if you're lucky I might include your idea within the product range.

Am hoping to use polaroids of scantily clad women for marketing purposes, as i've developed a mechanism for adhering them to the product. I also have an idea for a company that sells polaroids of scantily clad women stuck to car windscreens. Any potential investors out there?

Something to stick polaroids of scantily clad women to windscreens you say? No need

1. Holding the driver's door mirror on a Rover 75. It does a great job of this, though the MOT tester may disagree.

2. Patching a hole in my 'indestructible' aluminium suitcase where the Heathrow baggage people managed to smash off the corner plate, rivets and all (I watched them do it from the plane window - it took them a bit of effort but they clearly viewed it as a worthy challenge).

3. Formerly, keeping the rain out of some pretty big holes in the Golf's soft top. This job eventually proved a bit much even for gaffer tape, and I've now wrestled a new hood on board.

This was in a Tosco car park last week, and had me puzzled a bit:

Both sides.

It adds a certain je ne sais quoi, much like a car-bra.

Not my work but surely the best OLD SKL FORD Mod out there:

The vinyl of the rear quarterpanel interior trim in the Rover was squeaking on the painted metal underneath it. I stuck about a foot of gaffa tape on the metalwork yesterday, and voila, no more squeaking (it was really pissing me off)

The massive holes on my front wing are covered in black gaffer tape. Contemplating covering the whole wing in it, just to be 'ironic'.

YES!

As soon as I saw you'd posted here Dave, I thought everyone needs to see a picture of that!

I saw a Clio at the lights the other day that had lost most of it's front plastic wing and the owner had fashioned a make shift one out of gaffa tape! It wasn't even a particularly old car either, surely a wing for one is cheap as chips.

Changed the bumpers on your car and left with holes that suck all that lovely exhaust gas into the rear of the cabin, leading passengers to complain about the dizziness and travel sickness? No problem! With my new patent pending solution, you too can shut the whiney fuckers up with the simple application of these stylish silver Gaffer Squares, available in a range of colours including Traditional, Silver and Alumnium.

When I had my Royale the drivers side wing was rusted to buggery and I got outbid twice on new ones on Ebay  so I had to resort to gaffa tape to cover up the holes.

I have to say the chap who bought it off me has done a fantastic job rebuilding them, there's a thread about it on the blue forum he keeps fairly up to date with. It was so good to see that car going to someone who is looking after it. :D

I taped all along the top of the wing of my Felicia, cos it was full of massive holes. Judging by above, this is an approved use.

To cover the holes left behind by the previous owner where they removed random bits of bodywork.

Added bonus, it's the same colour as the paint.

(Which is why I now have red gaffa tape on it, because it was too camouflaged)

i utilised white gaffa tape (because my cars white) as a temporary m.o.t fix last year on my crapis rear arch

I keep seeing an Audi A3 with an orange bulb poking through tape... and I keep forgetting to take a pic.

Mainly the usual sharp edge coverage or bike seat recovering from me. Temp fix for bike waterproofs has worked well as has taping up the stitching round bike gloves on long rides on chilly days. Oh yeah, newspaper and gaffa tape = plaster cast win. Drink beer and go to hospital in the morning :)

Holding your windscreen in? See the eBay thread:

Have a Banham X99, you snivelling pov. Face it, you just haven't got what it takes to be an estate agent. Or a hairdresser.

I had a good chuckle at that myself. Imagine trying to explain that one away at the SVA? I've 'fixed' our house's cheap shitty double glazing units with tape before, but never a windscreen.

IIRC the Ferrari F40 had tape in various parts of the interior; like where they CBA to finish off the bottom edge of the dash, and round the edge of the doors, where the doorcards weren't. But it was red, and applied at the factory, so that was ok.

Didn't Alan McNish's Audi racer finish Le Mans one year, with most of the front end taped together? Not uncommon in the history of endurance racing mind you.

After finding that in heavy rain, water was pissing into the cellar at work because of a cracked cast iron downpipe we 'fixed' it with gaffa tape about a year ago. I reckon next year we'll need to replace the tape if nobodys coughed up to replace the pipe

I squirm whenever anyone pulls up to the left hand side at traffic lights. Note I did make the effort and rattlecan the tape in the body colour.

The worst thing is it starts coming off at speed and looks like a mummy is trying to escape my wheel arch.

My favourite pair of shorts I'm wearing this very moment are held together with 3 separate strips of gaffer tape (actually, the superior Nashua tape); two on the left leg where I tore the worn out denim when kneeling down and one to stop my car keys falling out the gaping hole in the right hand pocket. All applied from the inside though so no-one need know.

Must get some new shorts, really.

how about an aussie shed almost entirely constructed of oxide and tape?

I don't know about that one but Porsche seemed to be very skilled with the tape:

That's wonderful!

I like that it's been 'topped up' with fresh tape.
