Your year of birth!

Ok, I'll kick off with 1964 and cars that I'd have loved to have owned:

*Yes, I do know the cars featured here were not actually first created in 1964, just a small showing of what was available at the time.

Austin-1100-1963-2.jpg

Introduced a year before the Austin 1100/1300 was the best selling car in Britain between 1963-1971, bar 1967 where it was roughly 25,000 units behind the Cortina.

Myriad model range, new (for the time styling) and it was one of those cars that you seemed to see everywhere at the time. But more about them in another thread me thinks.

Can you think of the 1960s without thinking about the first of an incredibly popular range of cars that carried on in name until the early 1980s?

austincortinam1.jpg

1962 saw the launch of the Cortina, starting initally as the Consul Cortina, the early 'pre-airflow' model had a 'Consul' badge on the bonnet. Originally destined to be called the Archbishop, Ford decided to change the name to the one we know and love instead. Saloons and natty looking estates were available in a choice of two engine sizes, 1.2 and 1.5. The 1.2 had a three bearing crank and was not (in my experience) the greatest engine made but not a bad little plodder at the same time. Later on the Cortina Lotus (or Lotus Cortina if you prefer) was made and what a car that was!

Were the sixties the kick start years of 'proper' small cars with a reasonable amount of room for small families? How could anyone forget that this was on the market at the time?

austinimp.jpg

Mini rival, unique looks and Rootes boasted that 'more than £22M was being spent building new factories in Scotland' to produce Rootes first ever baby car. Looking at the history it's said that water and air cooled cars were tested before full on production commenced. Still see these cars as timeless, a wonderful product of a time where Britain's car industry was in full flow.

What were Vauxhall up to around that year then? These were on the market for £831, 1 shilling and one penny...

austinvictorpictures.jpg

Quite a staid looking car, something Vauxhall seemed to prefer as many of the cars for years after appeared to follow this 'plan' Not such a bad thing if it sold cars for them, but probably didn't have people 'wowing' at the same time. The estate versions of these are the better looking imho and typical of that sort of era.

Couldn't leave this out. The earliest ones have to be the best looking of the bunch and still had that sort of 'bank manager' type image and were lots of middle aged/elderly/retired people would have been prime target buyers I should have thought. Too many differing views of the last 'real' Rover but personally speaking I'd have thought these or the following SD1 should be able to make the greatest claim towards that title...

austiroverp6.jpg

2000, 2200 and 3500cc engines available and single/twin carb choices too. I'd love an early one in white or blue.

Anyone else want to add their year of birth and tell us what was in production at the time/what you'd have loved to have had?

Agreed, there are many differring views....................but mines right

Any new Rover model after the 1967 merger is not a REAL Rover but a BL parts bin mash up.....the P6 was, indeed the last of the real rovers.

Can I follow with 1963 and this...

It's BRG & on wires, I don't think I can write anything that will add to it significantly.

Born in 64 as well Billy so youve covered my year perfectly , Ive heard Imps called many things but timeless isnt one of them although they dont seem to have dated badly

You really need to get , or at least try a good Imp sometime if you havnt already , they are a hoot to drive and going up in value but hopefully not out of reach .

If your ever down deepest Somerset look me up , il take you for a blast about in one of mine.

You're a bunch of old bastards aren't you? :D

I can't think of anything vaguely interesting launched when I was born, though a fair few had just ended production...

I was born in 1975 so I suppose one of the notable shite icons from that year was the Leyland Princess in its original Austin/Morris/Wolseley form. Also the TR7.

Didin't the Citroen CX also make it's debut in '75?

1979 here, so a quick Google suggests Aston Martin V8 Volante, BMW M1 and Mazda RX7. A mint example of each in my fantasy garage will do very nicely indeed.

I came into this world in 1982. We all know that there can only be one choice

Sierra_salon_1300.jpg

Although I could also have a Nova, Micra, E30 3 Series, Citroen BX or a Porsche 944. But do they have a grey grille and fuel cap? I didn't think so

Same here, but I'd much rather go for a Tagora!

Not being that old

I was born when production of the Lotec C1000, was started (1991)

1991 also being the year that my 309 was first registered 8)

What else is of a 1973 vintage, like myself? Allegro. God no, I'm not claiming that. Someone else from '73 can claim that.

I'm having the Renault 16. Much more suave and innovative. Just like me.

renault16-1-zoom.jpg

And the very first Passat. 'Cos I likes 'em. And they're for the thoroughly modern, thinking man. Just like me.

Volkswagen-Passat_1973_800x600_wallpaper_01.jpg

Mind you, if my folks had emigrated to Australia, like a few of my relatives, it could only be...

p76large.jpg

...a Leyland P76. 8-track, Dark Side Of The Moon, sorted. Good old 1973.

1959, which gives me:

SpiderMin-vi.jpg

(I know, it's a later one, but at least it was my own)

Anglia-vi.jpg

MyBack.jpg

100_0005-vi.jpg

100_1225-vi.jpg

Not a bad year! We had a Herald when I was learning to drive; the Mini (one of several) and the Anglia shown were both mine; and I've either driven or ridden in, if not the 59, then closely-related examples of the Chevy and Cadillac. Either of which I would be delighted to own, me being me. :D

CJ, I'm afraid the R16 dates back quite a bit further, to about 1965. Sorry. I rather think the 15/17 coupes were launched in 73 though...

Posted

1961 here as well....sadly cant post pics from the works system.......

Consul Capri

PA Cresta

Mk2 Zodiac

Chevy Impala 409

Ford F100

Chevy 1 ton truck

that would cover it :D

I was born in 1985.

The year the MK3 Granada come to us, as did the Alfa Romeo 33.

On the rally scene, don’t forget about the MG Metro 6R4! :)

Posted

I was born in 1977 but I was really struggling to think of any cars launched that year. I could only think of the mark 2 Granada and that was it. However it wouldn't be the Granny I'd choose. Along with the new executive Ford came the release of the 2.3 litre V6 powerplant so I would have a mark 4 Cortina Ghia with the 'T-bar' automatic transmission! :D

Having drawn a blank, I found this on Wikipedia :D :

HOW COULD I HAVE OVERLOOKED THE PORSCHE 928??

And for that matter, the original BMW 7 series?

BMW7series.jpg

The Datsun 200B looks interesting but that was for the Ozzie market only.
