I've been pondering on, do I keep it as it is? Or sod it and get it sorted with a new paint job, dash etc. It's running poorly, but I did notice part of the carb has fallen away. I'm going to do the basics (I'm electrical/mechanical engineer) and see where we go. I have seen some mk1 front doors on marketplace that look OK and are only a hour away.

Its a hard one cos theyre only original once. If it could be kept up with sympathtic repairs and maintainance then all the better. But ive never met it in the flesh so like @sierraman says, if its on the turn then catching it now may be better. Be a shame but better than loosing it.

The valley of the kings was original only once.

It's already been welded and filled so is no longer "original"

Near enough. Its had running repairs. Once its had a full coat of paint itll not look like ford flogged them like.

It's going to need a respray especially if the doors are replaced.

Congratulations, good to see it has a new home.

I have a box with some Sierra windscreen moulding in it.  There's a reference above to it being fitted with Mk2 moulding, though I didn't realise they are different.  Whilst it doesn't sound like a problem, get in touch if you need some.

Dash: been discussed a lot of times.  You probably know that a Mk2 dash will fit and generally is much less prone to cracking.  Uncracked Mk1 dashes are impossible to find, ridiculously expensive and also inevitably about to crack.  So stay original and live with cracks?

The Mk1 trim has a chrome effect moulding in it, Mk2 doesn’t.

Ok mine doesn't have that. I think it came from a MK1 but a very late one. That might explain it.  Thanks

The chrome effect windscreen trim, which was standard on all trim levels at launch, seems to have been deleted in late 1984, judging by my brochures.

Good to see you on here Ian, it sounds like it's gone to a good home which was everyone's biggest worry, there was a lot of concern that it would end up getting skidding round McDonald's and having the windows kicked out

Sure I saw an article on this the other day? @RetroShitewas mentioned in it, forget who the author was but I believe it was from the Telegraph?

Lot's of comments about this and the cavalier in the comments section, one bloke even had a Cossie as a company car the rich bastard.

Generally a lot of love for the Sierra over there 👍🏻👍🏻... And the cavalier.

I’ve met more people that have supposedly had a Cosworth than Ford actually ever made so I suspect 80% of them it was actually a 1.8 LX and they’re talking bollocks like people seem to uncontrollably do whenever they see an old Ford.

I've always wanted to see it polished to fuck and waxed to within an inch of its life, if it ends up going down that route I can't wait to see it!

Different era, but I once had a boss tell me he was getting a BMW M3 company car. Turned out to be a 320d with M-Sport badges.

Isn’t that exactly why BMW do the M sport options, so twats can brag about owning an M model🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

There was a point in the late '90s where Sapphire Cosworths, particularly 4x4s, were pretty cheap and with the typical chequered background they had, got sold pretty rapidly by each owner as bits fell off, broke, or got nicked - so I suspect a fair few Ford enthusiast might have had their hands on a "Cossie" if they're older, but not new, not long, and not a good one. Car dealer mate Ian got more excited when a Sapphire 2000E got traded in than any offers of knackered Cosworths.

I've never driven one or been particularly tempted, and I find this Sierra more interesting than say, an RS500.

Now, I did have - for a short time - an XR4x4 TT280 to play with. That was fun.

Dashes can be filled and repaired - colour matching can be tricky, but lots of info and products out now that if a cracked Mk1 dash of the right colour were acquired, it could be done slowly as a practice run/swap over plan. That's how I'd proceed.

Saw an instagram reel of a company redoing sticky-coating plastic switches and trim and I'm thinking of having the Audi's door and dash panels done if the cost is not too bad. It'll take time to remove then all etc. but the end result would be worth it - it does seem like restoration firms are catching up/products getting cheaper and easier to use for plastic and expanded-foam type interior pieces! And of course all the 3D printed stuff (you can get almost any accessory for the Sinclair C5 as a 3D printed part now and they're not too bad - Ford parts must be a bigger business and therefore better quality on offer).

A dangly mirror Sierra. Cant remember the last time I saw one of those.

I saw one at a show just outside Norwich in July.  It was an L though rather than a bASe.

I live close to Ford Dunton, and for a brief period the Sapphire Cosworth was on the employee lease scheme for those of a high enough standing. A school friends Dad up the street had his stolen, was located minus the “Cossie” bolt on bits and then when he went to check it out, had been stolen a second time before he got there - all on the same afternoon 😂

He did let me rag anything round the block once I was old enough to drive though 😇

Excellent news that this is within the fold still. As you'll see we are very much appreciators of the bASe and similar end of the market cars here.

It sounds like it's in very good hands and will be maintained/survived rather than appearing next year as some modded bling stance bro type thing... which is good :)

I’ve got a special one off Mondeo Cosworth. I can’t show it anyone though as the magic will go away and I had to sign an affidavit from Ford promising that I’d only bring the subject up at car shows when I felt in a panic to say something interesting or if I was pissed and started to feel left out of conversations in pubs. It’s got a 400bhp YB that drives the rear wheels through a BW T5, it can spin the wheels into fifth, it’s in Radiant Red like a big angry looking dermatitis inflamed cock.

Ford selected me specifically to test it because I had a milk round in Chesterfield at the time, Jackie Stewart brought it round to my house personally on a trailer covered in bed sheets so the press photographers did not recognise it. Jackie Stewart wore a disguise, he had a Ford Motorsport jacket on, a tartan scarf and one of those joke glasses/nose/tash things.

Not many people remember this but I took first place at Silverstone that year in it. I’ll restore it one day. But in secret.
