The body roll thread

Let’s see some door handles getting scraped in the bends.

Fully rolled over cars don’t count.

I’ll start with a Wartburg and a Dyane in action.

Great thread idea. Not sure the French can be beaten at this though pretty much anything looks cool cranked over.

This is not a pic of mine obvs but my old R5 used to heel over on to the door handles at the slightest provocation. Definitely a French thing.

I've owned a couple of mk1 Renault 5s over the years. I remember driving my first one back from the pub back in the 90s - I was the nominated driver for the night. My old mate Darren (RIP fella) was a pretty resilient bloke but he kept on complaining, asking why I was 'throwing the bloody thing so hard around the corners'. I explained to him that the 5 handled like a sofa cornering on a road made of jelly and that body roll was part of the charm*. He ended up asking me to stop so he could throw up - didn't hear much out of him for the rest of the return journey!

So, why did old cars have such extreme body roll compared with new stuff? The ARB is hardly a recent invention. Most old cars roll heavily compared with the flat cornering of anything modern.

Why? Just changing tastes, or something more?

That was the standard posture for London Country Nationals when they pulled up to a bus stop. Used to have to give pensioners a bunk up to alight (missus)

Wide tyres have a lot to do with it, combined with the limitations of the (ever so cheap to make) McPherson strut.

Tastes have changed though, The cult of "TopGear lap times" has emphasised max lateral-g (never approached by most drivers) to the detriment of ride quality and pot-hole resilience; qualities that a driver can enjoy day in, day out...

It's a pity I don't have a photo of my Reliant, but I was driving it at the time.

Until the 1980s, French roads were often less than smooth...
