Cars you have owned that suddenly disappeared from the roads

On a related theme, have you ever noticed when you get a new ( to you) car , you seem to see the same make and model in the same colour  everywhere?

It's just the earth software being programmed to load the same asset due to hardware limitation, at the cost of traffic spawn set having a lot of duplicates.

What better to do on a Sunday evening than browse Facebook marketplace in search of a Rover 400 HH-R

Except I can't seem to find any that tick the right boxes for me

I don't know what it is about them but part of me really wants to get another one like the one I used to have - A hatchback nightfire red 414, manual.

I can't seem to find one for sale anywhere.

Went on 'how many left' which claims there are just 12 left 414I S models currently taxed! And roughly 50-60 on SORN.

Where did they all go? I know that is just one very specific variant of a pretty obscure car but it does sadden me to think that they've pretty much all gone!

Alternatively there is a very lovely looking 420, but unfortunately it's a saloon and £3k. Yes, it's rare, and low mileage. But is it worth £3k? Not to me, not sure about anyone else.

My main preferences are a 414 or 420 in nightfire red, ideally hatchback, must be manual. It's got to be cheap because if I was spending £3k I'd get something more universally desirable.

I'm absolutely kicking myself for calling it a day and getting rid when the clutch went in my 414, but they were totally disposable back then and there were plenty more around.. yet they seem to have disappeared so quickly 🙁

It won't come as much of a surprise if I said another car from me which fits the title of the thread is a Daewoo Tacuma...

Found this one. Any good?

MK2 Yaris, Mk7 Civic.

Guess rust has gotten to most of them by now, but oddly Mk1 Yarises still crop up frequently as food delivery hacks...

Sierras. Had a few, there were always loads around and they didn't seem to rust unlike Cortinas.

Then all of a sudden they were gone, and 1.6L saloons in dull colours with worn interiors are lots of money

A car I thought had disappeared was the late 90's Toyota Carrola. Suddenly I am seeing quite a few of them. Okay, there not everywhere but suddenly these old giffer mobiles are coming out of the woodwork. Can only think that they are either ULEZ refugees or folk can no longer afford the PCP payments and have taken over grandads car.

The only Dyane I saw in France a couple of weeks ago was in the museum at Lohéac - but I did exchange waves/flashes with a couple of 2CVs, a Renault 4, and two convoying Dauphines.

E34’s. Only seen about 2 in the last couple of years and I drive about a lot for work. Seem to have all been broken up for the 525i engines for e30’s

Just thinking about this, but when was the last time you saw a Nova or a Saxo? They all seem to have been crashed or scrapped now. There was a time you could spot one upside down along every road. Now, never see them. What are the kids crashing now? C1's, VW Up's, or Renault Clio's? Or have they gone straight to PCP's and are binning Nissan Jukes? [Please.] 😁

I had a Honda Hrv really good to drive and very light. Also had a Mk 1 Hyundai Santa Fe. It was truly awful so swapped it for a Honda CRV mk1 of which a lot are still about. Toyota Tercel was one that disappeared fast as rusted so bad. Xantias and xms are rare now and had a few of them. Buy a mk 1 st low miles now before these are added to this thread in ten years time 😀

I still see first generation Yaris quite a lot, the second much less, I just don’t think they were very popular when new, styling was a bit off. Obviously whatever they did with the third gen one made people buy lots of them again.

If by Mk7 Civic you mean the spaceship ones there’s still plenty down south, also Mk1 Jazz, although the herds are starting to thin out.

Mazda 6s die due to rust, the first generation ones have more or less all gone and the second are starting to disappear.

Back to the OP, I've found one! Didn't think to look at C&C.  Ok, it's a 416, but it's otherwise spitting image of my departed 414... I love the 5 spokes and nightfire red is the best colour IMO

^am I being silly or is that just a fricking good looking car? :)

Sorely tempted, but it would involve getting rid of a car which I don't really want to do

£1500 is a bit more like it, but the MOT history seems a bit colourful so I'd want to know if the welding has been done to a sensible standard before parting with any more than a grand for it.

Whoops. Meant Mk6 Civic, although the spaceships are getting scarce around here.

I knew a guy who had a Mazda 6 in 2013 and it had fist sized rust holes in the wings at 10 years old so no surprise there. Both my Dolomite and the 99 Megane in the same car park were less crusty.

Until recently my local Chinese takeaway used a 54 plate Yaris for deliveries.

I agree that the Mk2 wasn't that good looking, & the Mk3 was easier on the eye.  The

Just thinking about this, but when was the last time you saw a Saxo?

Expand

Funnily enough, I still see Pug 106s about, particularly in Herefordshire/mid Wales.

I guess the ownership profile was different - Saxos were for the ‘youth’, often sold with free insurance, whereas 106s were more for middle-aged or elderly folk, who were more inclined to look after them and less likely to spin off into a ditch.

I doubt offering free insurance with a new car would be a good financial proposition for manufacturers these days!

They did it for the 108 when they first came out. I remember thinking that for a new driver, If I remember right, it was £100 down and £100 per month, it would be a bargain. I have no idea how old you had to be to qualify for the free insurance, but given the cost now, as you say, it is not something they would offer. At the time, new driver insurance came in a about £1000.

I haven't owned one (Yes i know the title), but ones came to mind that vanished overnight.

Mazda 6. Not even the Mk1's, the Mk2's.

Used to see them everywhere, notable because i fucking detested the things when they came out. They clearly had a pretty awful design flaw on the headlights that later got rectified because the issue seemed to stop, the early ones had horrible, cheap looking HID's that if you had one behind you or travelling towards you, would look like they were flashing purple over bumps. They all did it for about a year then never saw another do it after that for the entirety of time seeing them.

I reckon the majority sold were likely diesels, given they were out at the height of the popularity, so between the imploding 2.2 and the galloping rot, they virtually all died up here before 10yrs old. Only seen 1 or 2 ever pop up for sale and the MOT histories always make long, entertaining reading. Corrosion, gets mentioned a lot..... unsurprisingly.

Why the fuck anyone buys a Mazda (Especially in Scotland with the salt), i've no idea.

Austin Metro,, Rover 213/216 and Protons.

I had a 1.0 Metro L as my first car, and they were everywhere in the early 90's, then a Rover 213 and later a couple of 1992 Protons.

Haven't seen any of them on the road for a really long time.

Renault 5, I just don't see any now.

K11 Micra's seem to be steadily diminishing round here. Couple more winters will do for most I reckon.

Posted

Last of the line primeras seem to have evaporated.

I cannot remember the last time I saw a mk1 or 2 avensis.

Posted

Most of the cars I have owned have seemingly vanished.

Ford Cougar, Peugeot 306, Skoda Felicia....

From observations: Nissan Almeras have also seemingly disappeared.

K10 Micra. I know of one which I see locally in dailyish use.

Even K11s and K12s are thin on the ground here as well. Saw loads of them pre-covid.

There are tons of the Mk2's still up here. (i suspect a lot of the ones down south ended up as minicabs).

There's a snooker club just outside the town centre here, and across the road there's a mosque. Can confirm even in 2024, it's very much the car of choice for the congregation. Fleets of the things coming and going at certain times.

Also no shortage of them popping up for sale, 2 or 3 a week. And that's probably a massive compliment to them, given all the Mondeos and Vectras of similar age are now vastly outnumbered by them.

Mk1 Yarises

I read somewhere recently, possibly here, that 40% of MK1 yarises sold in this country are still on the road. Feels like a lot, but they do have cockroach qualities.

Really don't see Ford Pumas about the place anymore. My £300 1.7 would probably be a £2k car now.

Funnily enough, a number plate triggered a memory of my R reg 1.8 today which I sold in 2018 ish. MOT ran out in 2020 but it is on SORN.
