The French Collection - further breakdown and bonus misery

My white chariot on the way home. The 205 drives beautifully. The 1.4 feels asthmatic compared to a fettled 1.8.

The 106 feels a lot tighter, ride is very different.

This thread has it all.

I laughed

I cried

I hurled (just a wee bit)

Excellent effort all round, especially the ARSE endeavours.

Gentlemen, I doff my cap.

A hitherto unmatched tale of human suffering. The lads in Guantanamo Bay have nothing on this.

Good effort.

The 106 has been up on the ramp and it's bad news. Details to follow

Stay tuned for bonus French misery

I'm waiting for my plane back to racist island Blighty and this thread is the best thing that happened during my week in Turkey.

Exploring the absolute depths of human misery in a mission to acquire a small French diesel hatchback but coming home 24 hours later in a completely different one than intended.

This place ain't what it used to be man.

Yes, indeed.  I loved that little car... 🙂👍

Just remind us why you traversed the country in the middle of the night using third world public transport to get... this

To be fair, if you can find someone who can be bothered to weld it the rest should be pretty straight forward work.

I think there's a saveable car in there somewhere, it's more about whether it's financially prudent to fix or not.

Engine seemed fine. @Jimbob McGregorchanged the vee belt and the alternator quietened down.

It's ULEZ compliant in Glasgow, it's a genuine 70mpg, it's interesting and it's cheap to insure as a classic.

I enjoy the adventure, the uncertainty and the misery a fair bit as well honestly.

What does it need to drive home, wheel bearing and an alternator?

Posted

That's the thing, realistically I'm not gonna fix it. I enjoy driving cars and picking them up but I'm fucking shite at fixing them. It's at the garage now which is the best place for it

Corrosion
OSF brake pipe
OSR brake pipe
OSF wheel bearing
Exhaust weld up
Brakes to go over
NSF shaft or CV joint

4x tyres as well

Shock horror! A 30 year old car is rusty!

Yes that's a lenient MOT. But who's filmed that video?

How are you going to follow up this one?

Some light water-boarding in an out-of-service ScotRail sprinter toilet?

I'm tempted to make an offer for the film rights to this thread "Across Britain for a Fucked Peugeot".

That's the fair @Jimbob McGregor

A serial shite whisperer and enthusiast. I very much trust his mechanical opinions and his opinions on bats too.

Don't get me wrong, no discredit. Apologies if that's the impression I gave. I was just being too light-hearted!

All the advisory things like the tyres and brake pipes need not be considered in my opinion, but the rust near the front suspension mount has no excuse. Easy appeal with DVSA [not VOSA ;)] on that.

The wheel bearing is anyone's best guess, if it's been laid up it may have been fine at time of test but as soon as it's been put into use with dried out grease or whatever that can easily happen.

What happens if I appeal with the DVSA about a car that passed when it shouldn't have? Do they get a bollocking? I'd obviously lose the MOT but would I gain anything from it?

The wheel bearing I agree with and it's what Jimbob said as well, could've been on the drive up.

If you're not going to get it fixed, understandably, then why not? If you're prepared to get it all fixed then I agree there's probably no point, but if you, understandably, aren't prepared to throw good money after bad, the current MOT on it shouldn't be on it so it might as well be removed, ensuring whoever is responsible is held accountable.

Was it bought from a private seller or trader? I'm not trying to get all "don't get done get dom" about it but if it's a trader of some sort, even a trader posing as a private seller then selling a car with a bent MOT needs to see them struck off from doing it to someone else. It's borderline criminal if there's anything particularly unsafe, the wheel bearing being the main thing but like we say, tricky to prove due to the miles covered.

If the car isn't being fixed then get the bent MOT taken off it and the dodgy tester scolded to stop it happening to someone else

Yes you wouldn't gain much, but if it is that fucked then it can't be sold with that MOT in good faith, so it might as well be sold as an MOT failure/needing work disclosed meanwhile they face the appropriate consequences
