When these Mk2 Cavaliers first came out my Dad still had his garage in Luton.  I’d have been 17/18 ish.  He had a customer / friend that got an early 1.6SR, before they made them 1.8Fi’s.  So it looked sporty but was only standard 1.6 power.  This guy was a rep and quickly put 100k on it, by which time it was guzzling oil so one of the last jobs my dad did before closing the garage down (in Maggies recession) was to fit a brand new crated vauxhall replacement engine, as they were still too new for recon untis from the more normal engine suppliers.  At the same time dad had another cusromer, one of the last hat factory families in Luton, where the dad had just bought an early BMW 323i that was just so nice, and his younger son who was their company rep, had a new 2.0 mk5 Cortina Ghia which looked great but was so antiquated compared to both the Cavalier and the BMW, and woefully finished and unreliable.  For me Ford certainly rested on their laurels through most of the 80s.  Don’t actually think much changed until the first Mondeos.

My dad had a 1.6SR as a company car, he didn't want to hang on for another few weeks to get the 1.8 SRi.

A quick update, the new owner of my Escort has fixed the arches and sills, fitted new door bottoms and given it a lower half respray. It's looking smart now so I thought I'd share some photos.

Meanwhile I've sold the Cavalier back on, I done a few shows in it including the festival of the unexceptional and whilst the cars absolutely lovely it just didn't excited me and spent most it's time just sat on the garage.

So i put it on eBay, as I'm sure many of you saw and it sold in less than a week to a local guy who's had 34 Vauxhall's and learnt to drive in an identical one back in the early 90s, he was looking for something to keep original and to take to shows at the weekend so he was perfect for it.

Obviously this meant that I HAD to buy another old car, first there was this Lotus Cortina replica that came up for sale for £9500, it has a 2.0 zetec, twin 45s, type 9 and all that jazz, I was second inline for a viewing but the first guy bought it which was a bit disappointing.

Screenshot_20250831-130251.png.9a9a3a6a3dc658f0bda4e0dc636d6612.png

Then a red MK1 Cavalier came up for £2200 but again it sold before I could view it, next this 20000 mile Datsun 140J came up on Facebook for £8200, I had arranged to view it but it was a lot of money...

FB_IMG_1756923889422.jpg.91a6e0fc203571085a454f036b2bf76f.jpg

I was due to view this on Tuesday but something better came up on Monday...

I haven't done much with the Manta as I've been having issues with it, one of the previous owners fitted a cheap Chinese fuel pump as it was apparently struggling to start when sat for a little while, unfortunately it was unregulated so it was pumping 4 psi of fuel into the carb and brimming the secondary port with fuel when running making it extremely rich!

PXL_20250918_150520185.jpg.0e483025b9c4be4fa631497d4bf671f3.jpg

There wasn't a safety cut off either so it was just constantly pumping fuel all the time, that's now all been taken out and the original lift pump put back on again, I also changed the fuel pipes too

It's now running better but when it's hot it won't start, you can see fuel going into the carb but it's bubbling away! dad's been over for a look and we've come to the conclusion that there should be a insulation spacer between the inlet and the carb and that the carbs getting too hot from the exhaust manifold, hopefully once I've fitted that it will be ok again.

I've also fitted rear seat belts and some rear speakers for it.

I've been working on this old thing the last few weeks.

33856866688_620cf1da00_b.jpg.7202e721b3ce51470ffc373d7c3b9a67.jpg

My dad bought this 1957 Ford Popular 103E about 7 years ago and it's been sat in a barn since after a bit of welding work, unfortunately the mice had moved in and it got rather neglected.

PXL_20251105_131437974.PORTRAIT.jpg.622fc9813b2e75664ead2bf5a9864f6d.jpg

I got it back to mine and made a start cleaning years of mice shit and piss off it, it was proper minging man.

I pulled several dead mice out of it, the old car cover went straight in the bin, the following morning I opened the bin and alive mouse jumped out of it!

PXL_20251105_152400974_MP.jpg.5b4e1648fe27812088f39e9903b85c36.jpg

Once all cleaned I made a start with repairing and painting the lower A post panels.

Once the wings have been bolted back on they'll look as good a new.

The brand new 6v Yussa Battery expanded and split and ruined the tray so i repaired that too.

There's still plenty of work to do, bumpers need painting, it needs a new carpet and the rear seat was damaged by mice and the rear board got woodworm so in the middle of trying to repair that

It's not really my thing as it's a bit old but it's very basic and easy to work on!

Interesting to see this, apparently the precursors to Sheffield-Garner, Mereside Ford and most recently John Grose, all listed at what seems to be the same address. Showroom recently demolished and site due to be redeveloped as some sort of Council leisure facility.

A bit of a boring update as I never took many photos of the work but the Pop is pretty much finished now.

Refitted all the wings and painted and refitted the bumpers too.

Good old Hammerite Smooth silver done a cracking job at making look better again.

PXL_20251210_163831017.PORTRAIT.ORIGINAL.jpg.eb958a9210dd543a84e67ec2c9c08ac3.jpg

After that me and dad ended up having to remove the clutch as it was still making a awful noise, the reason it was parked for so long on the first place, it ended up being a poor quality clutch plate dad bought from the owners club, it had expanded in the middle and was rubbing we think so we ended up putting the old clutch plate back in it again

It's a bit of a twat of a job as you have to remove the floor and drop the rear axle and pull it back to separate the prop shaft.

PXL_20251219_152551733.jpg.50cbf9ffe6fdabeefba02ac048f43551.jpg

Anyway after all that it was a case of putting it all back together again, repairing the rear seat and then fitting a new carpet set and underlay from Coverdale Carpets, we've also fitted door mirrors too.

I picked myself up another car today, number 78 so far..!

PXL_20260128_153342026.PORTRAIT.jpg.b669eab8e4c4f9cd4c9bd9dd57c7fd97.jpg

A friend who deals in barn finds that I help out a lot got offered this a few weeks back, the previous owner who owned it from 1991 had sadly passed away and his brother was selling this, it had been in the garage since 2018, there was a bit of negotiating between my friend and the seller where he decided to see how it would get on with a MOT to get more money for it and surprisingly it went straight through with a new battery.

It's a 1989 T Bar model with 83000 miles, absolutely piles of old service receipts, old tax discs to 1994 and all the old MOTs, the original bill of sale from 1991 for £10700 at Milling Motors Toyota in Tunbridge Wells and even photos of the car from the weekend that he bought it!

PXL_20260128_153350049.PORTRAIT.jpg.b5863bcf90f94d86cb428c1c028401d8.jpg

It needs a bit of bodywork, front bumper corner, the paint on the top of the rear bumper is a bit thin and both rear arches have surface rust which needs sorting but overall it's remarkably good.

The alloys need a refurb plus the front tyres are dated 1999! It's only done 12000 miles since then.

Not yet as it's still in my neighbours garage for winter but it won't be cheap, I'm not overly sure what it's even worth now to be honest.

Glad you’ve bought a real MR2 Trigger and not some Ferrari in an aftermarket body kit.

Should the time come when you wish to move it on, you could perhaps take some tips from this high quality production.

I haven't got a clue, he came from Tunbridge Wells so I presume it's from that area?

I know exactly where this photo was taken as I used to sometimes park at the same spot in my RAC van when I had a meal break down that end of the county.

It's Church road just off the A26 coming north out of Southborough/Tunbridge Wells facing the cricket pitch and the Hand and Sceptre pub.

For me it was a great place to park and have a nice nap as the spot offered some welcome shade and cool back in the days before air con was fitted to the patrol van fleet.

It would be an easy image to recreate if that's your thing.

And for added win you have Vauxhall lane just up the road too.
