I've upgraded to a Epson SX435W, It's a fantastic piece of kit for the money, printers seem so cheap now compared to 5 years ago.

Kodak started selling printers where the initial purchase price was high, and the cartridges were cheap - exactly the way everyone demands it to be. The response? Dismal. Kodak announced last month they are pulling out of the printer market, they are rightfully sick of people demanding things be produced for less than cost price.

So yeah, you can buy a wireless all-in-one printer for less than £40. Do you think once you've designed it, made it, had it shipped to the UK and put it in a shop, there's much profit left? Many printers are still sold at below cost price (see also: Gilette razors, Sony Playstations) with the idea you then balance the cost out by refilling it at a higher than necessary cost for the next few years. Kodak tried it the other way and look where it got them. What people actually want is a cheap printer, and then cheap refills.

Yep. I too have a £35 Epson printer/scanner/copier and use 'compatible' cartridges off ebay. They are less than a quid each and I've never had any problems with them.

We ended up with an 'Advent' which, going by our usual luck with this sort of things, will last about the same length of time as the calendar with the same name.

Managed to clay bar the Maestro from nose to tail before I got rained on. Since then, it's been spotting just enough to make polishing impossible and every time I get anything electrical, like the vacuum cleaner, outside to get the interior done instead, the heavens open. I can't get the Princess out of the garage to finish the job off in the garage because she now has two flat tyres and I still can't select reverse.

Really I should have known better when my first job when starting to clean the Maestro was having to hose half-melted ice off the car.

Hey, VA, what's the plan for the Princess then?

Posted

Save up cash, and then fix. Going to take my time to do it right, get all the little bits of welding done, get the gearbox properly looked at, sort out some better tyres... all the stuff I couldn't do as easily while driving her about. And of course, empurplement is a must.

Advent is Currys/PC World own brand. They're actually rebadged Kodak printers, and are shockingly good considering everything else with that brand on is a big pile of stinky poop.

Oh, nice one, cheers. To be fair the girl did say the ink was cheap and well supported and also the box had a leaflet that said only to use Kodak paper, so that explains that!

I bought a shit load of old truck photographs a few months ago and want to scan them for Flickr so hopefully this will be ideal.

I know, I know, another "aren't other drivers shit" rant but FFS! I've been down the M1 today. There is a long four lane stretch in Derby/Notts where no-one was in the first and second lanes and the third and fourth were clogged up by wankers doing 65. What's going on?

^That I ABSOLUTELY hate, must admit to be a bit of a dirty diver and sometime sail through on the inside lanes

Time to dig out this gem that Negative Creep posted a while back

I don't understand it myself, I was on that section on Friday and was in lane 1, with no traffic around me bar a new driver ("P" plate  ) in lane 3 doing 5mph less than me... It was a right palaver to have to go out to lane 4 to get past him just because he was a lazy bastard.

It wasn't the only piece of shit driving I'd seen since joining the M1. I'd set ou on the A1M about 40 miles further north; I'd hadn't had to brake at all until I needed to join the M18, then hadn't braked because I didn't need to on the M18, but within 5 minutes of joining the M1 I'd had to brake 4 times, each time was a 15-20 mph speed drop because of other's poor driving.

Shit. I've just seen on the BBC news that someone I know has been killed in a motorcycle crash.

I've taken my lad up/down the M53 the last couple of days to show him how I reckon motorway driving should be done. He was amazed by the amount of people who obviously CANNOT BE ARSED to use the nearside lane.

That's fucking shit news mate. Sit down and have a bottle of summat. Do him the honour of a good send off, and think well of him.

Inkjets are bobbins.

A lot have a big pad of felt inside where it pisses all your ink in the name of cleaning the heads etc. so they've a designed in working life.

Unless you print a lot of photos (plenty of places do this anyway these days) then you are better off with a second hand laser, sure the cartridges for some are not cheap but I'm happy to leave mine weeks on end without any fear of

it going tits up when I come to print stuff off.

Picked up a set of new cartridges as well - sat ready so should last me a few thousand pages at least. :)

Her. I've known them for at least 15 years, really nice people, her husband is under arrest along with a truck driver for causing death by careless driving AND the news says she was pregnant. I'm just numb., and I'd already drunk all the bottles before the news came on. Thanks for the sentiment though, it does help.

yeh, bloody awful news for you SOC....sorry to hear that.

The lane thing is just nuts, I was at a old school bmx meet in Milton Keynes in August, I left at 12.30 am and drove south on the M1 to go to my mums and just like in the video, empty motorway with 4 lanes and dickheads just sailing along in lanes 3 or 4 with lane 1 & 2 completely empty.....ridiculous.

Horrible news SOC.

Also, I can't get rid of Coupon Drop Down. Tarra Chrome.

Ah, Andy man. That's shit news. BTDTGTTS.

Send 'em off well, that tends to be what bikers want.

Yeah, printers boil my piss, there is no accountability for pricing older models into landfill...

As above Scary... my thoughts are with you, and all her friends and family :(

Hope you're holding up ok SOC, her family have my condolences.

I can't log into AS on Firefox. Anyone else have the same problem? It just goes round in circles. I have to use IE, which is more unpleasant than getting shacked up to the tits on tick at Arnold Clark for a 1.0 Glacier White Corsa Life. The clue is in the name.

That is sad news indeed SOC, my deepest condolences to you and her family.
