The grumpy thread

The earlier cars don't normally blow the head gaskets but the late ones (95 on) do! This was after Cosworth got their hands on them in an effort to make them compliant with future emisions regs which without shit loads of money throwing at them tthey couldn't do. It cost VW £300 million to get the old V8 clean enought to put back in production. The whole company was only $330 Million...

If only they were simple to do: intercooler, 8 ram pipes, plenum chambers etc before you can even see the engine! Parts are horrendeous:8 gaskets for the ram pipes x2 for both ends, head gaskets, the rocker cover gasket will all need updating to the new version with rubber instead of cork, loads of spacers and doofers. I was quoted a grand to replace the rocker cover gaskets!!!!!!!

No word on the old girl as yet, properly pissed off now as it is sinking in just what a fucking disaster this probably is. Been ringing round for cheap cars and there is no answer or sold or horrible. I hate buying bangers nowadays unless from one of our esteemed friends on here as everyone is a twat (myself included) and wants shitloads for ... shit!

Strangely, I am worrying more about the bumper than the engine, I think I am in denial!

I have a spare car... Albeit miles away. Can deliver and lend it to you for the cost of petrol and rail ticket home...

Perfect time for a Ford Pinto/Perkins Prima/OM 505 conversion m9.

Also, the C15 should have a new clutch soon; plenty of room for Chester to skid round on the bay liner in the back.  The potential for pissing off the neighbours is also strong, I feel. Does goes handbrake turns.

Or buy a 3 litre - they are impossible to blow head gaskets on!

Still epically pissed off, mostly about the bumper! I am utterly insane, I should be in tears at the state of my bank balance and the impending doom that is coming my way. I am, but not as much as I should be...

Fuck the heap of shit, it's been nothing but a money pit since the day I got it, if I sold it for  £40K I would about break even but the car is worth maybe £25k so unlikely, although I could try and find an insane Arab Prince with a hankering for a big green dolllop!

Then MUG him!

If it all goes Pete Tong I'll sell the sod to Flying Spares as a wreck and let them break it for parts so long as I can go and watch and then set fire to the remains. It has done 400 miles (just under) since October when it was serviced/MOTd, 600 the year before - it had done 79800 when I got it, 81972 now. so about 2000 miles and about £25000 spent at Specialist cars so far! Anyone care to work out the cost per mile? I would but too scared/scarred!

If it helps, the Oxford is at 3.91 per mile ( if you don't count the labour/time/fuel for the trips etc) and all I'll have when I am done is a 1500cc Bseries.

Nae v8 nor boost;(

Hmmm. The Land Rover 70 birthday film was obviously going to be gushing, but Ranulph Fiennes calling them 'god's cars'? Spare me.

Bloody eBay keep changing my listings to accept bloody offers. Never given them my authority to do this, they drop you an email to let you know like they are doing you a fucking favour.

Inviting offers only encourages the idiots bidding you at half the price.

Don't know what you're moaning about, tbh. I have a complex multiple-personality disorder. Some days I think I'm a temptress in a Bizet opera, other days I'm convinced I am the head of the German Luftwaffe in the Second World War.

I don't really know whether I'm Carmen or Goering.

and it took nearly half an hour to find the hubcap that fell off while out in it this afternoon.

always seems to be the same wheel too, o/s/f one, at least i hope that changing that wheel for the spare will stop it firing shiney steel discs of death hubcaps into the undergrowth or passers by.

Is it definitely the wheel that is the problem?

Have you tried swapping the hubcaps round?

£12.50 per mile.

On the bright side, if you drove at 1mph that'd be better value than going to the cinema...

On the flipside your Bentley expenses exceed my yearly income which currently funds three cars on top of my survival...

Fucking tight arse company's keeping vans until they drop whilst wasting money leasing the replacement to have it sitting in a yard!!! But it's ok when yours shits itself "we have a spare van in liverpool yours isnt due back till end of the month"

Too bloody right! It is lovely and it was going so well, fatal saying that wasn't it? Still pissed off about the bumper! When it's done, I think it might be time to get rid, expensive cars are fine if you have the disposable to support their bad habits: it's like living with a Coke addict!

I think it is time to get rid in all honesty. You have spent a vast amount of money and it really isn't repaying it with reliability. Shame but all good things come to an end. This has not been a great car for you mate.

True. I shall wait and see what the 'word' is then decide. I have lost a bit of faith in Specialist cars after the last service they did (didn't) . But, there is no one else round here that will work on the bastards, plenty say they will, but bail out when told to do it then. I don't think people realise what awkward old sods they are to work on though head gaskets is just nuts and bolts, especially with pushrods... no cambelt to worry about timing up or anything. If I wasnt such an old cripple I'd do it myself but it would take me 2 years now as I can't bend over for long and I have no strength anymore so every time a bolt was tight I'd have to get a mate to come and help. I would soon run out of friends!

I know someone who is a Bentley master technician who would sort it for you - but he's based in the North West.
