I did a degree in law, but railed at the prospect of becoming a lawyer - I'd come across too many of them - real and wannabes.

Ditto. I realised within three weeks of starting my course that I couldn't stand to work with these tossers for the rest of my life. I still found the subject matter interesting, though, so I carried on with the degree, then went into a generic office job with mediocre pay. The people are good, though, which helps. I could more than double my salary quite easily by going to work in London, but I don't think I could stand living there (no offence to those who do). The promotion prospects in the Norwich office are more or less zilch for the time being as everyone there is in it for the long haul (I've been there seven years and I'm still a new boy - one woman has been in her job since 1969). So I'm stuck in my little rut, and I'll probably stay in it until I eventually get round to emigrating.

Which is partly why I'm studying engineering with the Open Uni. I should have done it 20 years ago (it's a long story) but studied genetics instead. I went to university straight after school because there weren't any jobs on the edge of the Scottish Lowlands, or more to the point, all the jobs for young people that were worth doing and lead somewhere were filled by youths whose dad knew the correct "handshake"/someone at the golf club/yacht club/bowling club.

D&G or the Borders then??

I did a course in aeronautical engineering but found there was next to zero jobs at the end of it. Those that were about were poorly paid. Not that I passed the course anyway. The invention of TEH INTERNETZ and quake put a serious dent in my ability to study. The closest I got to a job in aerospace was an interview with Air Atlantique at Coventry airport. I would have been working on DC3's and the like, my dream job. Never heard fuck all back from them.In the end 3 weeks odd of training and approx 2k put me behind the wheel of an articulated lorry. More money than many "uni" jobs and probably less stressful, although the credit crunch and E.U workers have now pushed pay and conditions through the floor.

My brother did a degree (at LSE), got a good grade and since then (he must have left circa 1982/3 he's had two jobs, both at a zoo and that is it.He did well as he sort of fell in with the right crowd so pissed about wine tasting/importing for his mate's dad and covered a lot of the globe.Met a few people over the years who went to uni then just ended up doing jobs they hated for less money than a thick cunt like me earnt, hence me asking about degrees earlier. At work it would appear the 'degree gang' do earn serious coin to be fair and they're all doing what they trained to do so it can work.

I agree about the university thing, I have a degree in photography, am a qualified nurse (registration now expired) hold an aeronautical engineering qualification and an IOSH in 'elf and safety. I work as a postman earning less than £200 a week, why? Because my other half is in an extremely well paid job so I work part time and do all the household stuff what a waste of time all that education was

If I had known I would have spent my money enjoying life and gaining life experience (mainly involving alcohol and women  ) rather than spending all my time grafting at the books. But I am happy and very lucky to be where I am (semi retired at 30 8) ) daytime tv sucks which is why I spend lots of time on the 'net.

Neither. The Highland Boundary Fault was about 3 miles north of me, and Loch Lomond about 4 miles. It's the only place I've lived that I couldn't live there again... Just too much pain, misery, boredom and lonelyness.

Decided I wanted to be a lorry driver when I was 12, never changed my mind right through my teenage years, left school at 16, worked in a warehouse as it seemed like a good way to gain experience, drove 7.5 tonners from age of 19-22, loved every minute, got my class one HGV (as it was then in 1990, cost me £800 borrowed from relatives various; did agency work, for 18 months then drove for several small haulage firms untill the late 90's when trackers mobile phones etc seemed to take over, haven't driven a wagon in 11 years and would not go back to it now for anything still keep in touch with some of the lads I drove with, all of them want out, one took a job selling double glazing on the knocker rather than get in the cab again, can't be right if you ask me (which nobody does)
