The grumpy thread

'Don't need' pretty much sums it up. So many things are gotten rid of long before their useful life has come to an end. I've had the same iphone since 2011 and only now it's starting to show signs of faltering. The other half has had three phones in that time (though to be fair to her, her old ones do get handed on to her mum, so they're not discarded).

Now, I wonder where I can find a community of people who like keeping old shit running... hmm... I wonder...

Black Friday is horrible and I was so angry that stores like John Lewis, Tesco etc were actually marketing it last year (I'm pretty sure that was the first time I had seen TV adverts for Black Friday).

It seem morally disgusting to whip up a frenzy to get people spending. It's reminiscent of the people camping outside Next in the 90s and 00s but worse.

Personally I hate and avoid sales, in particular when it comes to clothes. I won't even look on sale rail in a shop most times (eg the 2 or 3 times a year I shop for clothes; 7 garment wardrobe!!!).

TkMaxx is like my worst nightmare. A shop full of sale rails.

...I also have no make up, no handbag and my shoe collection is mainly running shoes. I think I FAIL the girl-test. :(

You are my wife AICMFP.

Hang on, that sounds weird, like Papa Lazarou or something, sorry.  What I mean is, I'm happily married and my wife would agree with everything you just said, including the make-up/handbag/running shoe bit.

Thing is Billy, if you owned Tesco and didn't do BF, you'd have to explain to shareholders why your stores were empty whilst they were queueing out the door at Asda.

People love bargains. Shareholders love people spending money. The horrific truth is, you HAVE to do BF if you want to see any customers on that day.

John Lewis didn't really partake last year. They are this year, we know this already. And they're the sensible, clever ones.

Is Black Friday when people inflict bodily harm on each other so they can pay £500 for a £30 telly?

I will be having a look for anything interesting online but won't be setting foot in a shop that day

Aye, then try to flog them on on eBay.

HMRC. Called from a mobile to called the 0161 number. On hold 45 mins. Got through and was told to call another number as this is only for overseas folk. Told why i called it, ie free from my mobile, nope i have to call this other number. Its the same team he said so it should get through quick. So let just get this correct, you have told me to phone a expensive number just to get back to the same folk?? Get a real job you fecking twat  :-(

Life gave me a real wake up call tonight:

http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/salford-university-flats-woman-dead-10345998

Was just walking a friend up to the same building as the ambulances pulled up behind us.

We both saw the corpse being covered up, panicked, she grabbed a sleeping bag from her room and we buggered off to our mate's place down the road.

I have queued outside a shop prior to a "Sale" - the local DIY store has a New Year event where they have x number of certain items and they are either massively discounted or free. I queued for 45 mins and got a Black & Decker Mouse Sander and a Bosch 14.4v Battery Lamp free. Some mad fools had queued for over 5 hours just to get a Sony Blu-Ray player for £19.99 - discounted from £149.99 (this was a good few years ago mind). IIRC they only had 10 in total at that price and I saw adverts in the local paper for at least 5 of them the following week

Excellent. My all-singing all-dancing DVD/VHS player has decided that anything played on it now will have no sound. Great picture quality but no sound whatsoever. All the settings are fine, the crappy scart leads are all Ok. No matter which way or where I link it it up, the sound just won't work.

Of course, this has coincided on the day I received the correct remote control for it.

So, yet another fucking piece of technology that has decided to fail. First my old phone, an old DVD player, the tablet, now this new fucking DVD/VHS player. My pile of technology things that need binning is growing. Next...

It's one thing to want to buy a thing that you already wanted/needed BEFORE it was on sale and thus buy it while it IS on sale and saving yourself money. It is another thing entirely to run into a shop to grab the nearest shit you can find because you've been TOLD it's cheap and you're getting a bargain like the clueless fucktards in the countless Black Friday videos do. Besides, whatever you want is probably going to be a fraction of the price a year down the line so just go buy it then.

Watching videos of people running into shops and blinding grabbing objects they can reach while in a stampede of other idiots because it doesn't matter what they've got because it's cheaper than usual and they think they are saving money really makes me despair for the future of humanity. I'm not saying I SUPPORT the idea of closing the doors behind them and letting some form of lethal gas into the building's ventilation system, I'm just saying I'd turn a blind eye to it if it happened.

Black Friday. I'm an online retailer and for the last couple of years we've done Black Friday. Shoot me now.

But allow me to defend myself first.

We don't promote it particularly heavily - email newsletter and through our 'social media' so it only goes out to people who have opted to receive our stuff anyway. The stuff we put on special offer for BF is genuinely cheap too although most is older / over stock stuff. We'll have some stuff with 60/70% off (off either previous price or RRP) but its generally stuff that we've had in stock for a while or we've got huge stocks of. We're not ramping the price of stuff up beforehand to then discount or buying in a load of cheap tat to make people think they are getting a bargain and I'd like to think that we are actually offering some genuinely good deals. Certainly the feedback we get from customers is very positive and its proved a busy day for us and very worthwhile.

That might be because of the items we offer at a discount or it might be because our customers are all wonderful, sensible people (which of course they are).

That said, last year we did get one complaint - one chap unsubscribed from the mailing list and sent a long and bewildering email about how we were a disgrace for 'pandering to the yanks and their capitalism' I prefer to think that I'm running a small business and have a family to support and by selling older stock that we've got sat on a shelf I indirectly spend money on my family but hey ho.

On a slightly separate note though, the scenes of people fighting over 'cheap' obsolete TVs is pathetic. Some people do want to think they've got a bargain regardless of whether its something they actually need or not. Years back I worked at a place where a large high street clothing retailer shared space for their trucks and in the run up to the Boxing Day sales they were always hugely busy bringing in loads of cheaper stock that could be used for sales, stock that had been specifically manufactured and purchased just to sell in the sales so that people thought they were getting a bargain.

An analogy about knowing the price of everything but value of nothing might be appropriate here.

Mine did that, right after I found a remote for it and I did the same as you with all the lead faffing around. Then I picked up the remote and pressed MUTE and the sound came back.

All 0800 and 03 numbers are now free from mobile too if that helps.... I've found loads of places are changing their 0845 numbers to 03xx - there's a load of HMRC ones here

Dislike. Hope you are ok and the car looks better in daylight.

^^ Hope you're ok Mr S.Angle, whilst I wholly disapprove of the practice, you may* have a stiff neck tomorrow...(lets be honest the merest scratch these days writes off a motor like a 205, and then the insurance will offer 37p for it, so go for all you can)

+591434782246 to all the Halloween dissenters.

Every year the "preparations" seem to get earlier and earlier, and more and more elaborate.

Moar USA-alike hysteria, just what we need.

And secondly, away from the commercialism side, it makes it fucking impossible to do my job - I can't hit targets if the bastards won't open the door.

expect next week to be worse. Penny for the Guy?

How about setting fire to yourself?

Cheers guys, I'm OK. And the car isn't that badly damaged, but it won't take much to write off a 21 year old 205.

Worst bit is that the lip inside the boot is bent, sufficiently to stop the hatch closing.

If I can wheedle a reasonable settlement & buy it back for £not much I will fix it and drive round with an odd coloured tailgate. Not the end of the world then, but really annoying when it was such a tidy little car before Jed Clampett rode into the back of it.

^^^ Sympathies from me Mr Stange from a fellow accident sufferer, sadly my Merc is still waiting to get repaired.

And that is why I will NEVER let the dogs go in the boot of anything.

Glad you are okay, hope you get the car fixed after a nice payout and cheap buyback!

If you haven't got a sore neck you will certainly have a sore ear after all the phone calls asking if you have a sore neck!
