The grumpy thread

I didn't even now he was dead until now! Unlike the far more talented Lewis Collins, Mr Walker didn't get an obituary on what my parents would call 'proper' newspapers.

I suppose it is mildly ironic that someone famous for silly films about driving cars very fast should die in an accident presumably caused by driving very fast.

I was very excited to find my brand new beam-type torque wrench waiting for me outside the door, when I returned from work today.

The excitement only lasted until I unpacked it and realised that due to shite packaging and a clearly sadistic postman it had been bent out of calibration and was registering 10lb/ft torque even when quietly sitting on my desk. Fucksticks.

Shoot I was doing this evening has now been cancelled. GREAT.

Place that wanted me to shoot stuff for them for bog-all now want to me to do some other work. FOR NOTHING.

Pay from work still not resolved. ARGH.

There is something very wrong about all of this.

AMAZIN. WOT GUN DO YOU HAV? I SHUTE BIRDS DAT LAND ON PATOI TABLE.

This is normal for between 8pm and midnight here.  Apparently, there's nothing wrong with my internet but I suspect TalkTalk is lying.  I'm not the only person on the street to have this issue.

if its one of those wobbly wire pointer type torque wrenches, it is easy to to re-calibrate it by simply bending the pointer back to the 0 mark ;)

It is indeed the ancient 'wobbly wire pointer' type, frequently seen in grubby 1970s engine building books.

Is it really as simple as bending it back to the zero mark ? The pointer rod is probably no longer straight, and I doubt I can get it properly straight even if I get it to show the zero mark. Wouldn't a bent rod (ooh... err...) affect the calibration ? Or am I just being thick (which certainly is a possibility !) ?

The Rover just shat its gearbox. Fuck. There, I said it.

Oh, come on ! Someone with your P6 expertise should be able to rebuild it in half an hour, blindfolded, using only a swiss army knife ;-)

Osborne's getting rid of the tax disc.

Yes, because the DVLA can be relied on to maintain good and decent computer records which talk to ANPR \ PNC \ Insurance databases, can't they?

*Awaits the inevitable 'it's not road tax that doesn't exist it's Vehicle Excise Duty cyclists should be taxed fuck shit wanker' debate*

Building regs - I had a garage/extension built a couple of years ago. I'm still trying to get it signed off for build regs.

I call building regs at the local council who come and inspect it for safety blah blah. 3 times I've done what they asked and 3 times they've changed what I needed to do. I've had them in again today, and a gap that was left for a vent now needs to be blocked up for fire proofing. Ok, so I'll block it up tomorrow and call the bloke back asap before he changes his mind again.

I'm not keen on this new VED shit, mainly because I reckon they will bump the price up over time.

Am I right in thinking then that you wont be able to buy 6m, 12m or DD, just 12m or DD? I can never afford 12 months in 1 go, and struggle with the direct debits I have atm. At least with tax I can buy it on payday and job done, not hope there's enough money for the dd to not bounce

Also, say you wanted to tax for 2 months, could you set it up, make 2 payments then cancel the DD?

Building regs and local councils eh?

Laurel and Hardy instructing the Keystone Cops, only the resulting chaos wont be funny!

Try blocking the vent with bat droppings and owl pellets.

Yes, but with two weeks to go until x-mess It is a tad bit inconvenient timing-wise.

Very true. Still, isn't random mechanical failure the reason most of us have at least three cars ?

There will be a 5% premium for DD over 12 months apparently. The 10% premium for six months is coming down to 5%.

Isn't it normal for a DD customer to recieve a discount rather than a premium?

Somewhwere in the back of my mind is something about the scale on those being able to rotate slightly meaning the pointer is not at zero?

Can't remember if it was something you had to check prior to using or whether it was just a sign of cheap tat. Might be worth checking the scale itself hasn't moved/rotated slightly.

The scale is on a fairly thick plate which is welded onto the main tube of the wrench. So no margin for adjustment  :-(

Talking of bending things back, we used to have those run over tracking mats in the tyre placed I used to work at. When we couldn't be arsed (i.e 98.7% of the time) we'd lie under the car, hit the underside with a hammer (or whatever we had to hand) then the other one would keep the driver talking whilst the underneath man moved the gauge with his finger.

Yeah, but two of mine are now non-op, so three is deffo not sufficient. I'm working on the solution.

I did that, now up to 18 cars, 3 of which work.

The Reverend Bluejeans' barinous BMW has me looking a 3-series on ebay.

I can't afford another car, I don't like BMWs, that type of 3-series is far to modern, I should spend £200 on the Rover Coupe instead, Mrs_the_Princess would kill me if I bought another car, Mrs_the_Princess would kill me if I bought a BMW. I may will bid on one today :-(

It pisses me off seeing pictures in the news of cars up to their windows in flood water when there was plenty of warning and they could easily have moved them to higher ground. Why should our insurance premiums increase because other people are too stupid/lazy to move their vehicles to higher ground.

I'm sure most folk would prefer not to have all the hassle of their car getting written off by flooding! Maybe they were too busy shifting their belongings upstairs.
