I used to be right into minis and the whole mini scene. When I started driving, you could pick up a good runner with MOT and tax for a few hundred quid. Myself and a couple of mates went through literally dozens of them, saloons, pickups, vans....all bought, run, and sold for under £300 and often for as little as £50. I try not to think about how much they would be worth today.... Even the mini van I restored just a few years back I sold for well under its value for reasons I cant quite comprehend now. 

 

 

Got that way with Landies now. Bought my first car, a Series 3 taxed n' tested, for £750 eleven years ago; my old V8 powered 2a was £500 and I had several more sub-£1000 S3s.

I'm glad I got my Series 1 when I did, as there's no way I could afford it one now, they have gone absolutely mental on an almost Escort level.

If you're trying to second guess current/future shitemobiles, then you'll be a good way off with Citroen Picarseholes. They're cheap but will get cheaper still yet, and won't be desirable for many a year.

 

We, as a group, are lucky to be living in the times we do as the mid 1980s and the 1990s were the best years ever for reliable motors, and there are still shit loads of cheapos about in the Autoshite range. I.e the sought of car nobody really cares about, because they're too new/shit to be sought after, too old to be wanted by most of the British motoring public and at the bottom end of the price curve.

 

A friend in the trade has commented that the big issue with BXs (which is what I got) and other "modern classics" is going to be trying to keep them as original as possible - if that kinda thing is important to the owner. Originality will be key to the car retaining/increasing in value. Cars from 80s onwards came with sufficient different options that getting hold of good "correct" trim/interior parts is going to be tricky, particularly for pov spec models (which are most likely to have been squished) and remanufacturing of various mechanical bits and pieces to fit different versions (petrol? diesel? turbo? hatch? estate? - etc etc) isn't going to be straightforward.

I listed a load of mags on ebay, with supposedly 3 free relists if they didnt sell. Some didnt sell so I would like to relist them. It has let me list 20 of them free, now its insisting that I pay 35p each for the remainder. I only want a quid for the bastard things so I'm hardly gonna pay 35p to list them am I FFS, specially as the FVF is probably 65p anyway. What happened to the free relists? I do believe I spoke too soon.  On trying to get this house move sorted I'm looking at all sorts of financial aid for those on low income and while my business is generating some of what I need there's likely to be a rather large shortfall by the date I need to move by.  Family and friends can't help as they're all in much the same situation.

 

Derbyshire Discretionary Fund - would love to help me, they really would, but I earn too much money and I'm not in a dire enough situation to be helped.  Also, because I'm leaving Derbyshire I wouldn't be under their jurisdiction so they can't help.

 

Credit Union - Need me to put money away with them for 8 weeks, which is fair enough, but that puts me into September.  Also, they can't help me because I'll be leaving Derbyshire and they can only help those living within Derbyshire.

 

Bank - Minimum loan is £2,000.  I need £500 at the absolute most.  I can't take out a loan of £2,000 because I don't earn enough and am too high risk as a self employed individual.  I also can't take out a £2,000 loan, instantly pay them back £1,500 and then pay the other £500 with a sensible payment plan because apparently things don't work like that.

 

Wonga et al - No.  Just no.

 

I'm sure there must be something to help out.  Problem is while I live here Dad needs care which I can provide but not enough of.  I can either look after Dad and the house full time or work full time to earn the money to move out but not both.  My brother and his family can care for Dad and the house full time once they move in but they can only do that once I move out.  It's a big pile of Catch 22s.

 

Of course, the one uncomfortable suggestion is to bundle all the car stuff up and scrap the lot, Xantia and Princess.  The benefit is quick cash, but there's not enough of it to cover all the costs I need to cover and I'll incur additional costs since I'll then have to hire a van, I'll have no choice in the matter.  I don't have the time to sell them, nor to put up with mouthbreathers from the internet.  The goal was to use the Xantia to move with and then transfer it over to the garage who can then use it as a works vehicle and thus remove the financial burden from me while also saving the garage the hassle of purchasing a similar vehicle.  I'd then have the Princess for my own personal tootling near and far which as I know from experience is pretty cheap motoring and makes me happy.

 

If anyone has any suggestions of how to solve this I'd be happy to hear it.  I have no jewellery or anything like that I can pawn, I really have very little of anything at all left, the last couple of years have sucked everything of financial worth out of me.  I'm still working, out of necessity more than anything else, and while that is chugging along okay it's unlikely to generate the sort of funds I need to in the short timescale I've got.
