Riley Kestrel flavour 1100. The irony is this car is probably well under 10 years old and was the 'upmarket sporty model' (The Riley version was introduced in 1965). Our new 1972 Austin was showing rust coming through in 3 years - though we were lucky...Our neighbour's 124 Fiat was scrapped because of rust at 5 years old...those were the days...indeed.

No, it’s definitely a Fiat 128 Sport:

 

Agree the Datsun estate is a 180B Bluebird though. (I don’t think we got a 200B in the UK.)

It does look familiar, maybe Auto Union F102/Audi F103 from late 60s. Not even sure they were imported into the UK though? Or is it an old Lancia/Peugeot or something like that? I reckon that photo is from 75-76 and that does look like an old car compared to the modern Mk2 Escort, so something from the late 60's?

Dahn saff we never saw a homebase until the early 1990s when all the Texas Homestores were rebranded.

This is one of my all time favourite threads! What’s quite noticeable is how much older the cars are the further away you get from the southern stores near London. I’d never appreciated that before.

Probably because in London the public transport is better and the roads/parking are shitter than the rest of the country. 

So people of modest means are more likely to use public transport in London and more likely to run a cheap car elsewhere.

I vote for a Moskvitch 412, the distinctive indicators are unclear in the photo but the high sides and rear window line look familiar. I can't find a photo of one with a vinyl roof, but there's one seen from a similar angle...

Yes, it's a Moskvitch.  They were moderately popular for a while. My dad looked at a new one in a showroom and walked out after seeing the front tyre rubbing on the brake pipe. He kept his Vauxhall Victor FB estate.

Famously won every round of the BTCC ( or whatever it was then) in 1972/3 in its class...

This was because the classes were defined by price and a canny driver , Tony Lanfrnchi (sp?) realised Moskviches were priced the same as 875 Imps and 850 minis , so even though they handled like shit they were at least twice as powerful than the class competitors .

My Dad also looked at them and was most impressed with the toolkit and standard radio, but decided his 1967 1500 Cortina estate drove better and had less surface rust than the brand new 1974 Ruskie demo!

I remember them being sold new - they were incredibly cheap so sold a few. A school friend had one he drove to school!
