Probably didn't help that i pressed it more than once! 😂

I'm not keen on whitewalls but i'm definitely investing in some decent tyres. I'm far too used to driving modern vehicles with ABS and the "shit shit SHIT!!!" moment i experienced when dabbing the brakes in the wet, combined with the lack of ABS and the sheer weight of the car was unexpected.

It definitely won't be wearing chinese death rings!

Tyres, sir? Will that be Death Rings or Ditch Finders? Oh, suits you, sir.

You'll need R rated tyres or better for it. These handle remarkably well at speed, considering, but they really do depends on the sidewall not being rock hard, being as the damping is so... Minimal.

I don’t think it needs cats for the MOT. When ever I had it MOTd the tester would always say “I could put this through a cat test and it’ll piss it”. 0.02 on the gas analyser which is really low for an old car! But then again these California cars have smog pack as standard.

Posted

Iirc it's 1996 on imports and 1993 on EDM that need cats on an MOT to pass emissions. So should be more than old enough to not have problems without one.

Posted

As others have said there's no requirement for that car to have the cats fitted.

Without them it should be better able to breathe and probably run cooler.  The exhaust system will *definitely* run cooler, and will no longer run the risk of turning into an orange glowing ignition source of you develop a misfire halfway up the motorway one day.

With everything in good order this should run pretty clean without one anyway compared to most cars from over here from the same era.

If they do fuss, at least a pair of modern 3-way converters can go on, and you can ditch the air pump system.

As @worldofceri has alluded, its low milez yo! 😂

I got this from the original elderly owner who bought in brand new in Oct'13 from Sinclair in Newport. Story was that his even more elderly mother refused to travel in his MK2 mondeo zetec so he got this to take her to the shops etc.

He used it approx no more than 10x between then and Sept'16 when his mother passed away and it was parked in the garage and never used again!

It never had its 1st MOT or service!

Its the 'take up' base model which means it a bit mean on creature comforts (imagine along the lines of base model mercedes 190)

It was bought with the intention of offering it to muthasteve79 to replace her ageing smokey charade, but as its only a 3dr she's said it'll be too much for her to get 3yr old ministeve79 into his car seat.

As such, its having a major service and 1st MOT on tuesday and then will be up force-ale.

Shitters discount possible if anyone is interested?

What he said. If the lad can climb in himself, then leaning in from the front to do up the belts is just as easy as with a 4 door. Its loading a baby that is a pain with a 3 door.

However, if it comes up for sale - I'd be interested to know the price.....

Wow that’s low miles!! Imagine pulling that out Of a barn in another 10 years, the VW crew will be chucking pineapples at each other for it! Great find Steve!

I was genuinely surprise when the PO told me how little mileage it had on it.

I've done ok with little VW's. The last one i got hold of was this little Lupo in 2016.

Was off the road from 2006-2016 with a failed fuel pump and only had 19k on it

No surprise that this happened today

Should have bloody well hoped so with delivery mileage on it.

Its had its first service which i asked matey to do a major one. Its had new plugs, filters and oil.

Bizarrely the fuel filters on these are apparently integrated into the tank and are non servicable!

It'll have a good exterior valet at the weekend and then will be up force ale.

ANYONE INTERESTED?

Large proportion of modern cars >2000 don't have an external fuel filter. It's more of a gauze than a proper filter though. Generally not a problem in the UK and Europe as our fuel is pretty clean coming out of the pump.

As a separate note, my mum always preferred 3drs when we were younger. No possibility of opening doors and/or falling out of cars when moving!

Tried convincing mothersteve79 of the benefits of 3dr but she's been spoilt by the charade who's door open a full 90 degrees.

Plus she's 75 next month and starting to become a bit stiffer in the joints.

I'll let her off

Message me with the deets and I’ll ask my weekend shift supervisor, he’s after a small VW for his son so may be interested.

If she's getting stiff in the joints, the doors on a 3 door are generally larger.  When my gran was still alive, it was easier to get her in my 3dr Astra than my parents Rover 75.  Had to help her bend her knees, bless.

But I understand: some people just won't have a three door.  And in fairness the Astra doors are huge, and the doors on that little car probably aren't.

I bade farewell to the UP today. A small price drop on autotrader sparked interested in the last few days of the advert being online.

Lovely couple from Reading came this afternoon and paid asking price in twenties.

Empty garage = whats available! 😀
