Ooh lovely. I would love another manual jag. For no other reason than to go "oh wow that is heavy!" Unscrew the gear knob. It must be to help gear shift feel but they are very heavily weighted. Obviously that might be ana aftermarket one so might not be.

What we need now is the Autoshite body shop, if only such a thing existed, where we could get the paint sorted out! Do we think we could get away with leaving the roof black?

 

I don't mind the scruffiness. I think I'd feel like a flash git in a tidy XJS. Personally I'd spend the effort and money on ensuring it continues to work properly.

This one seriously doesn’t feel heavy at all. I was expecting the clutch/box to be the most tiresome part of driving it, but it’s really rather ok. Yes, maybe that non-standard gearstick has made a difference.

The brakes are fine. For something this age it really feels tight as a drum. There is very little give in the suspension if you try and rock it side to side and the turn into corners is sharp. It is merely cosmetically challenged. I do have a spare set of X300 “sport (i.e XJR)” wheels in the shed. They might look good on it.

This one has the Getrag 265 gearbox. X300s manuals used a Getrag 290. I suspect physically it would fit though on an AJ16s. Supercharged XJS conversions have been done.

Did they even officially sell manual XJS and XJ6's?

All 6 cylinder XJ6es in 2.9,3.6, 3.2 and 4.0 came as standard with a manual gearbox, tweed seats and plastic wheeltrims and without air conditioning. It was how they managed to keep the price down to the level of Granadas and Rovers etc.

3.6 XJ-Ses too were all manual as standard, although you did get aircon and alloys thrown in.

Auto was about a grand, as was leather. Sovereigns had everything as standard but were quite a bit more expensive. Think S-Class money instead of E-Class, pretty clever when it was just different trim .

The main reason I avoided the XJS was never finding a manual. I prefer them - so you're onto a winner there in my book.

I think the sweet spot for me XJ-S wise is a late Celebration or whatever the runout model was, in the turquoise blue or burgundy colour. Manual, with the supercharged six and suspension and brakes to keep up with the engine. Did I mention I might be seliing the Locost?

 
But I would've bought this one too, because it's a bit rough...

My manual 3.6 was great, the clutch was light and the gearchange brilliant. I really liked it and would have kept it forever if an ex-girlfriend hadn't taken a dislike to it/me and attacked it with a hammer! Little dents everywhere the bitch. I sold it to one of the many dodgy traders round here (and got a good deal due to poor light and careful leaning on the car :)   ) and was a tad gutted. Though to be fair, the heater was stuck on full heat which made the hot summer we had a bit of a chore. 

 

To be honest, I prefer the 3.6 manual to the V12 but they ain't worth as much (though they should be - V12 charisma?)  as they feel much more balanced, less understeery at high speeds and quicker/more responsive all the time.

 

Back in the day, I bought a brand new 3.6 auto sport pack in metallic grey with cream/beige interior, sports seats etc and loved it. Sadly, it loved the dealers far more than me and spent about 4 months in the first year of ownership back there. Consequently, it got rejected (amidst much recriminations and bad blood) and I got a Mercedes instead.

More old Jaguar content is always good content, especially when it is an XJS. I’m not sure about a manual gearbag in a woft-era Jag, but that could be because I’m a lazy sod.

Bonus lattice alloy in the boot for added jealousy and sexual arousal.

I worked at a main dealer when these were new and the standard manual gearbox versions were not well liked at all. Even mechanics thought it spoilt the car due to being heavy to use and generally weak (albeit usually the clutch).

 

However, TWR did offer a dogleg getrag conversion - these they totally transformed a V12........at a huge cost.

This looks like fun -- manual XJ40s were very tight in the footwell, are these better?

It’s a little tight in the pedal box. For some reason your knee has a tendency to bash on the steering column as well.

Correct I MOT'd that a few years ago.Very shonky.The owner thought it was worth £100k because it was The Saint's car.

I looked at the MOT failure sheet for the saintly Jag. Doesn’t look like there much left of the poor thing. The owner must have a rather over-optimistic view about it’s current value.

 

I don’t think I will have time to look at the Jag this week since I need to get the red Xantia through its MOT. Mig welder arrived in the post today. That, front brakes to sort out and an accumulator sphere to replace. A good place to start with the Jag might be a better inspection of the engine bay, then strip the interior completely and start again.

There's a cottage industry offering kits for converting badermatic jaaags to spanish gearing, upwards of £5k though so finding a fucked donor is obviously the AS go-to solution.

Things have been busy enough to prevent much work happening to the XJS.

 

I ordered a replacement bonnet which will be painted in the correct colour from the same place as the one I got for the turquoise XJR6. This one comes in at £200, which is still very cheap, and I can sell the old one on. I might try and persuade them to get their tame paint-shop to do the other bits on the car that need doing. Would be nice if there were somewhere more local, but I don't have such contacts.

 

Today work started clearing up the interior. Front seats and all the carpets and sound deadening came out. Much of it is soaked, but the floors are in one piece. Some welding has happened in the past obviously, but no nasty surprises. The boot is in surprisingly good condition and I can't see any rot on the scuttle panel of engine bay bulkhead. In fact apart from surface corrosion I can't find real rot anywhere. It's maddening that the exterior got attacked with blackboard paint and an orbital sander as it would have been ok otherwise.

 

The plan for the interior is to cut all new carpets throughout. Most of the original stuff is rotting and was probably poor quality even when new. Might need to source a replacement driver's seat. The headlining can be re-trimmed easy enough. It is just some fabric glued to a fiberglass tub. It came out easy.

 

The battery is dead. Strange it started the car last time when I left it disconnected, as today it was reading 6 volts. The battery tray is such that you can only fit a small battery. The one in there was 52 Ah. A spare 75 Ah I have is already too big.

 

I'm a little stuck with the wheels. I don't have the key to remove the security bolts on the centre caps. I desperately want them removed. Might have a buyer lined up for them and the steering wheel, so keen to do a deal.

 

Looking again in the engine bay the tips of the viscous fan have been shredded. This might explain the occasional graunching noise I hear while driving, seemingly at random. That need further investigation.

 

TL;DR no nasty surprises yet. The majority of the work is cosmetic and then just get the engine serivced up nice.

Excellent progress.

 

I see evidence of many previous owners getting their left elbow out.

 

I've often wondered how those headlining boards would look with just a coat of white emulsion, clean but rugged, a sort of toughbook look, not quite in keeping with the ambience of the JG though

      Well I've been meaning to sign up here in forever, but kept forgetting. Thanks to someone over on another forum I frequent poking me about it recently the subject was forced back into my very brief attention span for long enough to get me to act on the instruction.

      I figure that my little varied fleet might bring you lot some amusement...

      So...we've got:

      1993 Lada Riva 1.5E Estate (now fuel injected, as I reckon the later cars should have been from the factory...).
      1989 Saab 900i Automatic.
      1987 Skoda 120LX 21st Anniversary Special Edition.
      1985 Sinclair C5.
      2009 Peugeot 107 Verve.

      Now getting the photos together has taken me far longer than I'd expected...so you're gonna get a couple of photos of each car for now, and I'll come back with some more information tomorrow when I've got a bit more time...

      Firstly...The Lada. Before anyone asks - in response to the single question I get asked about this car: No, it is not for sale. Took me 13 years and my father's inheritance to find the thing.


      Yes, it's got the usual rusty wings...Hoping that will be resolved in the next couple of months.

       






      Next, a proper old Saab. One of the very last 8 valve cars apparently, and all the better for it. I've driven two 16v autos and they were horrible - the auto box works sooooo much better with the torque curve of the 8 valve engine. Just wish it had an overdrive for motorway cruising...









      Next up a *real* Skoda...back when they put the engine where it belongs, right out the back. In the best possible colour of course...eye-searingly bright orange.







      Seat covers have been added since that photo was taken as it suffers from the usual rotting seat cloth problem that affects virtually all Estelles.

      Then we have possibly the world's scruffiest Sinclair C5...



      Realised when looking for this that I really need to get some more photos of the thing...I use it often enough after all! We have a dog who's half husky, so this is a really good way of getting him some exercise.

      Finally - again, I really need to take more photos of - we have the little Pug 107.



      Included for the sake of variety even if it's a bit mainstream! First (and probably to be the only) new car I've bought, and has been a cracking little motor and has asked for very little in return for putting up with nearly three years of Oxford-Milton Keynes commuter traffic, before finally escaping that fate when my housemate moved to a new job. Now it doesn't do many miles and is my default car for "when I've managed to break everything else."

      I'll fill in some more details tomorrow - I warn you though that I do tend to ramble...

      Hi all, new to the forum.  Thought you might be interested in what I've got myself into
      I'd been after my first classic car for a while.  If it's big and made in the 70s I'm interested.  Looked at few things like P6s, Zodiacs, Victors, SD1s and various other things.  Problem was I didn't want to spend a boatload of money on something that looked alright but underneath was actually a total heap.  The solution was to buy a complete heap in the first place and spend the money fixing it.
      So in January I went ahead and bought this from a colleague at work who was moving away and needed to get shot of it.

      It's a part finished restoration (I prefer not started) and it needs a whole load of help if it's going to stand any chance of using a road again.
      Pros
      It's right up my street.  Granada Coupes are quite odd and certainly stand out from the norm.
      It still has the original engine, box, interior and most trim.
      It came with loads of panels I need to repair it (mostly original Ford stock).
      It came with so many spares I could probably build a few Granadas and still have stuff left over.
      It was cheap.
      Cons
      Most of the front end has been cut off.
      Most of the body structure is quite rotten.
      It's going to take me ages.
      I work at a restoration company and my boss kindly allows me to keep the car there.  So I've got access to all the gear I need to restore it.  I've been busy on the car for a while now so will post more pics over the coming days.

      Thought I'd start a thread about my old Capri since it's now reached it's turn in the que to receive a bit of attention.
       
      I've actually had this since 2001, it's an early mk2, on an M reg 1974. Being an early car it's still got mk1 rear axle and single acting type rear brake set up aswell as a few other minor differences from later cars just to use up remaining mk1 parts.
      It started life here in the Portsmouth area and doesn't seem to have ventured far since.
      Originally a stardust silver 1.6 L poverty model, which means virtually sod all regarding luxuries. Basic 2 pod dash with black 'crackle' finish facia, no radio, no sun roof or vinyl roof, not even a centre console!
      When I got to it unfortunately it had suffered severely from serious rust and latterly a vandal attack, having it's door and rear quarter panel booted in.
       
      Over the next couple of years I got it sorted and a cheap re paint into roman bronze, which was a favourite colour of mine at the time. For the first year or two it seemed fine but since then things have deteriorated.
      The respray wasn't good! It's thin in places and started to micro blister in various places, worst of which is all over the bonnet. The same bodyshop also did a bit of the bodywork I hadn't finished which was also pretty poor in some places.
      It's always been a great driver and never struggles at mot time so I just kept on using it and doing nothing more than collecting parts now and again with a view to sort it one day.
      It's also gained a few non original extras over the years like a higher spec wood effect 2 pod dash facia (which I like more than the original), a short console, brown interior instead of the utterly fucked black original, 'laser' 4 spoke alloys and a few other things.
       
      Anyway, fast forward to last weekend, when I dusted it off after winter and noticed various areas of new rust coming through or older rust that's gotten worse. So the decision was made to go for a professional resto job now before I end up finding something else to distract me (like big american cars with knackered engines!).

      Here it is as it currently stands. Looks ok from a distance but the reality is very rough around the edges and the paint is so bad in places it's becoming embarrassing!

      And the interior which I'll be re trimming into black leather at some point after the body works done.
       
      It's been taken to the same place that did my Mercury's engine rebuild, since they did such a good job and they seem a good professional bunch.
      I dropped it off Monday afternoon for a thorough check over to build up a list of work and get a rough quote.
      Today I heard back from them.
      Good news so far, I suppose. It is as solid where it counts as I thought it was. Chassis is fine, original strut tops fine, most of the back end is solid and just needs a few repairs here and there.
      The worst is the bottom of the windscreen surround due to the wrong seal being used and then fitted badly causing leaks. Inner sill to A post bottom corner very scabby, front wings pretty crap, and various paint defects etc.
      The engine is fine, compression all in tolerances. Suspension needs work, and some brake pipes are getting quite rusty. So far so good and no surprises!
      There's still more checking to do over the next few days but it sounds alright so far.
      This work should be made a bit easier by having a lot of panels and parts to fix things already. The big find being a new unused pair of front wings. Very hard to find mk2 items now, though I did have to pay for them!
       
       
      The plan here is to make the car solid, reliable and good looking. I'm not making a show car or going too mad as that stuffs not my thing and if it was I'd start with a better more original car.
      Some of the later add ons will be ditched like the mk3 boot spoiler that I hate! And return it to more standard looking mk2 as it should be. No go faster mods or anything like that.
      The main priority is to get the body sorted and painted properly (engine out job and everything) then maybe a bit of mechanical work as needed.
      The original idea was to re paint back into original stardust silver, but having thought about it I'm leaning more towards another favourite Ford colour of the era, Miami blue metallic, which is a lovely colour! Any opinions?
       
      This will be another expensive project but not one I think I could do at home on the drive and do justice to, so I'd prefer to farm it out and get it right this time. It also means I can carry on working on my Transit and Granada at home without another distraction!
      For anyone whose interested I'll try to update this now and then as things progress. I'll also try to get the old pics of the car from when I got it so you can see how rusty it was! Bear in mind though that I paid £100 for this car in 2001 with MOT and tax! Try doing that now.
      I'm sure this is going to be worth the expense, not that I'm even considering selling it of course but I've had it so long I kind of feel obligated to do right by the car in a weird way!
