These were famous for being the fastest thing on the road back in the day. Could easily outrun a Testarossa/911 etc.

I was just discussing Astra vans with my friend yesterday, and how they're the fastest thing known to humanity.

We reached the conclusion that if scientists really wanted to break the speed of light they just need to fly a spaceship at almost the speed of light, and before they know it the mirror will be full of Astra van, overtaking them at slightly above the speed of light.

Well that Fiesta doesn't have them. Just the original cables bolted to the round-post clamps.

A lazy bodge, but it keeps originality.

I did the same thing when the battery in my Mk3 Escort van shat itself in the arse end of the Auvergne back in 2000, and the local shop only had an 063 in stock.  Worked fine for the rest of the time I had the van.

I like them too.

I remember seeing a C-CACTUS concept car at a motor show (Geneva maybe?). It was full of good ideas to reduce cost and weight, while still remaining very practical.

(Edit: it does look a bit like Chief Wiggum though)

The production version was obviously more toned-down but there were still clever bits, especially the side protection - I'm surprised this didn't catch on. Weirdly we all still insist on fragile shiny metal, keeping Big Bodyshop fat cats fed.

However the Puretech engine is hateful junk and should be eradicated from the face of this earth.

Not their finest hour but my sister has happy memories of her mk2 1.1 Fiesta, doom blue with moss growing on the windows.

As a lad I did lust after a mk2 XR2 but with hindsight they were a triumph of marketing over engineering really - quite crude things. Ford did know how to appeal to the boy racer brigade.

I had a ratty 1.1 Mk1 which I enjoyed far more than I should have, I think it was £400.

Does diesel go stale? It's basically crude oil, isn't it?

It does go rank, waxy and bacteria laden. Apparently kerosene is the stable fuel to leave in your pumps and injectors.

Even if it did though, an OM617 would still run on it, so I reckon there's more wrong with that Merc than what he's saying.

Well - at least it answers the question I always had about what engine the 825 'Sterlings' that punted the not-quite-important-enough-for-a-jaag guys around Whitehall had.
Proper shed that is

"How Much!" 😀

I purchased that exact model in black for £15, brakes were shite.

Still managed to ride it home after it was hit up the arse by a CX500 and the frame bent so much the centre stand did not touch the ground in the down position.
