This sums up why I generally prefer older motors. A set of slotmags and that mk5 looks like it means business. Back in the day I'd have been happy driving it, same as now. I'm not even particularly a Ford fan.

I don’t remember the Cortina GLS. I thought it went L,GL, S, and Ghia. My dad had a 1982 2.3GL estate in a dark metallic green. Forest green maybe.

Weren't they a run out model and had the coach lines along the bottom of the doors and plush seats? I always assumed they were fancied up a bit because the Sierra was on the way.

On the mk4’s an S was part of the model range priced between the GL and Ghia, on mk 5’s they offered the S as an option pack upgrade on the L, GL and Ghia, it included several upgrades including spotlamps,  gas shock absorbers,  the LS and GLS had sports gearknob, revcounter, 185/70 tyres, headrests on the early L and sports wheels, and additionally on 82 model L and GL recaro seats.

arguably a Ford tradition that carried into the MK1 Mondeo - with Si between GLX and Ghia...

Thanks for that. Perfect but for the distance,

Can't get them for that price now.

Apparently, I'm an idiot for not passing this on earlier. Distance no object it seems.

We are in the hunt, but probably too late

I must have missed that when “advising” my Dad on his new car back then.

Absolutely ace that. Not only has it got the correct engine, but it's also had a 'back-in-the-day' crap looking blow-over.

I know those knobheads on an old BBC 'car' programme extolled the virtues of old Hiluxs, but when the actual fuck is one worth £18,000?

Also, isn't that one of those wanky HGF specials, not a 'proper' pick-up?

Indeed and finding a pair of “S” pack Recaro front seats for your Mk5 in a scrappy would have been like finding the holy grail. I always looked but never found. I think the “S” pack in an “L” also got you the 4 spoke GL/Ghia steering wheel iirc.

You are correct, the LS did have the 4 spoke steering wheel and overriders. On the L there were a lot of upgrades which made the LS a very nice car, the Ghia already had a high spec so didn’t have many additions. The LS was also the only model to have any performance modification, as it was a 1.6 it had the twin choke Weber instead of a VV. the Ghia S and GLS were only available with a 2.0 or 2.3 engine so already had twin choke carburettors.

I remember finding an accident damaged red GLS in a scrapyard by chance around 1990 and bought the front seats for £25, I was really happy with them and still have them as spare for my GLS which was my daily driver at the time.

Thanks, what a find! I’d forgotten about the twin choke carb on the 1.6. I loved the LS, I had a 1982 Y reg L and preferred the aluminium look dash over the wood effect. Also really loved the seats, so comfortable. Would love to see more of your GLS!

I believe they crack heads but before that the 20 odd year old transmission cooler will fail and let engine coolant into the Asin Warner sourced transmission. But hey Toyota indestructible etc etc

They recaro's became part of the "S" pack at the facelift in late 81 then in 82 the GLS became a model outright only available as a 2.0  in 4dr & Est form.

Unfortunately I don’t think I have any pictures, it is currently a bare shell with bits all over the place, it will be a few years until I put it all back together.
