They do the job, but they're  bastard to operate on tyres that are split to fuck.  They drive both wheels, and use a ratchet on each wheel to avoid "diff lock-up". 

It would have been much easier to handle if Pa had gone to the local motorbike shop and asked for a pair of worn-out scrambler front tyres, as they also have a 21" wheel.
