I had a summer job in North Carolina in 1999 and one of the local girls I was working with had one of these, in a fetching shade of metallic turquoise. I thought it was fugly, but I did like the way it handed you the seatbelt electrically. I preferred the slightly older Thunderbird owned by another colleague - better proportioned, and with a 302 V8 instead of the Cougar's V6 and a pimptastic red velour interior.

I loved that summer job - mainly because the boss let me drive her LWB Dodge Ram pickup around, as I was the only one of the summer staff who was used to driving on the right (apart from the two Russian lads, but she wouldn't let them drive because they were twats.)

I actually quite enjoyed driving the Swift I had. I thought it went quite well for a 1-litre, although the ride was bone-shattering. I am a sucker for a 3-pot engine mind.
