Mr_Bo11ox Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 HI GANG, No celebrities in this thread first of all. The back of my Horsebox is now full of load of old books and mags that have been sat in my dad's walk-in fridge for over 20 years. Its stuff from when I was a child/teenager/borderline adult, when magazines were the primary source of information (actually they probably still are if you have catalugued them well enough). Anyway I need rid of it all, or most of it. Amongst the shite there is some actual treasure - 'Car Mechanics' mags going back to the 50's, several years of late 80's Autocars, some early 80's Filby-era kit car/Alternative car mags, and 80's/90's/00's CAR magazines, as well as a big suitcase full of 1980's brochures. Anyway I'm going to try and work through it all (its all mixed up at the moment) and try and re-home what I can, might keep a few golden nuggets and the rest wil probably get recycled. Anyway the point of this thread is to see if anyone wants any of it as I work through it all. Don't really want any money for this stuff, just an alternative to skipping it really. Let me now of any of these appeal: Couple of ancient ROOTES factory manuals, £0 Factory Hillman Avenger manual, £0 Factory Maxi and Dolomite manuals Pile of Haynes manuals, the two with missing spines are Dolly Sprint and BMC 1100. PLus bonus Stuart Bladon BMW book, all £0 Wad of 1990's Classic & Sportscar mags I dont really want to get involved in posting this stuff out but I can do odd bits and bobs I guess (I'm not posting big bundles of mags though). If you want a Haynes or whatever you can have it for the cost of postage, which I imagine is 4 or 5 quid or summert. Collection is from Alfreton Derbyshire DE55. LMK if you want any of this stuff. Stay tuned for more shit over the next few weeks as I sort through it all. Split_Pin, UltraWomble, bolognasal spray and 3 others 6
warren t claim Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 80s Kit Car magazines are a fetish of mine that even after a decade on here I've always been too ashamed to admit to. Peter Filby was apparently a bit of a bellend in real life. garethj 1
Pillock Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 I'd be interested in the CAR magazines, the later 90/00s stuff is my sort of era. Also can probably take stuff to Cannock if any of the auction-goers want anything.
Billy - Medhurst Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Can I put my name down for the collection of brochures you have? - Ta muchly..
egg Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Looks like they have been claimed but CAR magazine March 1993, I'd be interested in! Cheers.
Mr_Bo11ox Posted February 5, 2019 Author Posted February 5, 2019 Im not doing reservations cos I don't know exactly what I've got! Will update about the CAR mags (and brochures) when I know roughly how many and what years they are, at that point folk can reserve stuff. The Old Bloke Next Door and egg 2
Mr_Bo11ox Posted February 5, 2019 Author Posted February 5, 2019 I just chucked some in the recycling!!! I thought 'can't see anyone wanting those'!!!!
sierraman Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Yeah the 1990’s ones are full of old shite before they just wrote about Ferrari’s etc. flat4alfa 1
bramz7 Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 If I can eventually get a scanner, I could scan in issues 1-50 of TG magazine. They did still write about Ferraris but made ample room for shiiiiiite. alcyonecorporation 1
Mr_Bo11ox Posted February 5, 2019 Author Posted February 5, 2019 I always think it would be amazing if these mags could all be scanned and uploaded to 'the cloud'. Anyone know of it being done successfully? flat4alfa, Pete-M and alcyonecorporation 3

BorniteIdentity Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 I always think it would be amazing if these mags could all be scanned and uploaded to 'the cloud'. Anyone know of it being done successfully? The problem is just storage. Really, this place should be an archive for things like this - rather than hosting elsewhere and they eventually pull the plug/charge millions. The problem is - I can’t see anyone suffering this rather creaky old platform for too long. It’s probably time uploading images was made simpler.
UltraWomble Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Im off to Bo11-Land in about 3 weeks to pick some wheels up so if anyone in the North West ( sort of Preston / Blackburn / Lancaster-ish) is really wanting anything I can pick up and store.
Saabnut Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Please do not recycle any factory manuals. Obviously if someone has a need for any, give them priority, but I am starting a shelf of obscure factory manuals to loan out/give away as required, and will happily take any going spare. I will sort out a way to collect them as I pass through the country on an irregular basis. BorniteIdentity, The Moog, egg and 1 other 4
sierraman Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 I’m like that. Somebody someday will ask me for a Datsun Cherry F11 manual. And I’ll not be able to find it in all the junk.

Saabnut Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Anything Allegro/VP1500 is the current fetish in our household! I have a Vanden Plas 1500 brochure dated Sept 1975 that I collected at the 1975 Earls Court motor show if you want it. Just PM me an address. Six-cylinder and richardthestag 2

This fella was quite handy at that sort of thing https://www.flickr.com/photos/triggerscarstuff/albums/ I think I've heard of him
Mr_Bo11ox Posted February 5, 2019 Author Posted February 5, 2019 Ive been reading up about this, seems there have been a few technological advances since i last looked into it. IN principle it looks quite straightforward: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmnoBPpc2fQ They seem to be coming out at about 100MB per magazine. Can you even get like 50GB of freely accessible web storage space? if i bought an automatic scanner like that one could i upload them somewhere where all shiters and other humans could access them? Obv there might be a few copyright issues i suppose. I just looked at Google Drive, they are saying 200GB costs £2.49/month but I don't think that will be accessible to all and sundry. stephen01, UltraWomble and SiC 3
Isaac Hunt Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Ooooph, I learned to read using my Dads Car Mechanics and Practical Motorist Mags. I used to get a Bollokin when teacher asked the class what they had been reading. Amongst the typical Enid Blyton answers was young me ‘car mechanics miss’. LMFAO, but I could have fixed ‘miss’s Ford Escort in the school car park. Body repairs those days were fabricating a new Capri Wheel Arch out of chicken wire and P38 finished off with a can of car plan or duplicolour Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Christine, Amishtat and pompei 3

Unlimited storage for about £40 per year and you can put the scans into "albums" to make them easier to browse.

Will update about the CAR mags (and brochures) when I know roughly how many and what years they are, at that point folk can reserve stuff. Sorry, was just registering interest and I'd imagine three decades being a big enough stack for lots of dibses. I can't think of any months/years off the top of my head that I want more than others so happy just to pick at the dregs of what's left once known I just looked at Google Drive, they are saying 200GB costs £2.49/month but I don't think that will be accessible to all and sundry. You can make your Google Drive accessible to all, just put all the scans in a folder and make it public. Send the link out and Bob's your freely accessible uncle.Downside is that it doesn't really do thumbnails or anything, it looks more like just a folder full of filenames. Flickr is probably a better bet for "browsing". Does give me an idea about a library hosted on this site, using some sort of gallery browser.... sofarsogood 1
Dave_Q Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Mega.nz gives 50gb free and you should be able to make it public. I guess the only potential issue with file hosting sites is that technically hosting a load of pirated material is against their t&cs and they may have to remove it if someone complains.
txe4 Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 If copyright holder complaints are unlikely, archive.org is where you want to be uploading. Would have thought 20+ year old magazines would be fine - no-one likely to complain. I've done quite a bit of scanning using a technique similar to the video above - cut the spines and stack the pages on a sheet-fed scanner. Haven't got the nifty machine for cutting right through the spine of a thick magazine in one go though - generally find bindings either pull apart easily if glued, or have staples which can be pried out with a knife. Then just guillotine the pages and good to go... The key to speed is avoiding jams; clearing a jam takes as long as scanning half a magazine.
sheffcortinacentre Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Any Cortina or caravan stuff? Can collect.
AnthonyG Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 I’d be interested in any 1980s CAR magazines, also the Don McCullin book from the box of Haynes manuals (assuming it’s about, or by, the photographer of that name)
alcyonecorporation Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 May, June and July '71 CAR for me please bol.

I've got hundreds of Car, What Car, C&S, Classic Cars, Auto Italia, etc from mid 80's though to around 2017 or so that I need to start getting rid of.But only once you've tried the OP.
