HI GANG,

 

No celebrities in this thread first of all.

 

The back of my Horsebox is now full of load of old books and mags that have been sat in my dad's walk-in fridge for over 20 years. Its stuff from when I was a child/teenager/borderline adult, when magazines were the primary source of information (actually they probably still are if you have catalugued them well enough). Anyway I need rid of it all, or most of it.

 

 

Amongst the shite there is some actual treasure - 'Car Mechanics' mags going back to the 50's, several years of late 80's Autocars, some early 80's Filby-era kit car/Alternative car mags, and 80's/90's/00's CAR magazines, as well as a big suitcase full of 1980's brochures.

 

 

Anyway I'm going to try and work through it all (its all mixed up at the moment) and try and re-home what I can, might keep a few golden nuggets and the rest wil probably get recycled.

 

Anyway the point of this thread is to see if anyone wants any of it as I work through it all. Don't really want any money for this stuff, just an alternative to skipping it really. Let me now of any of these appeal:

I dont really want to get involved in posting this stuff out but I can do odd bits and bobs I guess (I'm not posting big bundles of mags though). If you want a Haynes or whatever you can have it for the cost of postage, which I imagine is 4 or 5 quid or summert.

 

Collection is from Alfreton Derbyshire DE55. LMK if you want any of this stuff.

Im not doing reservations cos I don't know exactly what I've got! Will update about the CAR mags (and brochures) when I know roughly how many and what years they are, at that point folk can reserve stuff.

The problem is just storage.

 

Really, this place should be an archive for things like this - rather than hosting elsewhere and they eventually pull the plug/charge millions.

 

The problem is - I can’t see anyone suffering this rather creaky old platform for too long. It’s probably time uploading images was made simpler.

Please do not recycle any factory manuals. Obviously if someone has a need for any, give them priority, but I am starting a shelf of obscure factory manuals to loan out/give away as required, and will happily take any going spare. I will sort out a way to collect them as I pass through the country on an irregular basis.

They seem to be coming out at about 100MB per magazine. Can you even get like 50GB of freely accessible web storage space? if i bought an automatic scanner like that one could i upload them somewhere where all shiters and other humans could access them? Obv there might be a few copyright issues i suppose.

I used to get a Bollokin when teacher asked the class what they had been reading.

 

Amongst the typical Enid Blyton answers was young me ‘car mechanics miss’. LMFAO, but I could have fixed ‘miss’s Ford Escort in the school car park.

 

Body repairs those days were fabricating a new Capri Wheel Arch out of chicken wire and P38 finished off with a can of car plan or duplicolour

Flickr is accessible to everyone. Unlimited storage for about £40 per year and you can put the scans into "albums" to make them easier to browse.

Sorry, was just registering interest and I'd imagine three decades being a big enough stack for lots of dibses. I can't think of any months/years off the top of my head that I want more than others so happy just to pick at the dregs of what's left once known

You can make your Google Drive accessible to all, just put all the scans in a folder and make it public. Send the link out and Bob's your freely accessible uncle.

Downside is that it doesn't really do thumbnails or anything, it looks more like just a folder full of filenames. Flickr is probably a better bet for "browsing".

 

Does give me an idea about a library hosted on this site, using some sort of gallery browser....

Mega.nz gives 50gb free and you should be able to make it public.

 

I guess the only potential issue with file hosting sites is that technically hosting a load of pirated material is against their t&cs and they may have to remove it if someone complains.

If copyright holder complaints are unlikely, archive.org is where you want to be uploading.

 

Would have thought 20+ year old magazines would be fine - no-one likely to complain.

 

I've done quite a bit of scanning using a technique similar to the video above - cut the spines and stack the pages on a sheet-fed scanner. Haven't got the nifty machine for cutting right through the spine of a thick magazine in one go though - generally find bindings either pull apart easily if glued, or have staples which can be pried out with a knife. Then just guillotine the pages and good to go...

 

The key to speed is avoiding jams; clearing a jam takes as long as scanning half a magazine.
