Trolley jack recommendations

Hi all.

My trolley jack has finally died a leaky death. I forget the make but it was a reasonable brand but like all the cheapie jacks I've had the body distorted and had to be bent back, the mechanism for the handle fell to bits and had to be repaired and it eventually started leaking like a bastard. It did last 4 years or so though so I shouldn't complain.

So, new jack time.

Any suggestions? Needs to be able to lift quite high and able to take a bit of abuse without blowing up. I don't mind looking at second hand garage equipment if it means its better built, although jacks tend to be the type of thing that are only let go when they're totally worn out.

Help!

I think I’d try to find an old British made one, hewn from finest Sheffield steel and although over 50 years old will last another no problem.

Had numerous long serving clarke trolley jacks.  You used to be able to get repair kits for them as well, so that if they do start leaking, you can replace the 'O' rings or similar, instead of replacing the whole thing.  Any chance you could repair the old one?

I've used a "big red" for the past 5 years and not had a single issue, looks a bit tatty now paint wise but hasn't distorted in any way, doesn't sag or lose pressure under load etc.

^^^ I have that very SGS one ( purchased when my 2T Halfrauds one went pop lifting the C8)

Its very robust and seems highly recommended.

This is that jack against a Lidl 2 tonne jack which seems pretty much the same as most cheapy 2 tonne jacks.

I'll add to this having just bought one and successfully sent it back! I need a new one as well but it needs to be low profile cos all 3 of my cars are too low for a standard jack. Sorry lankytim for hijacking the thread (genuinely unintentional pun)

That SGS one looks just the ticket. I'm eyeing up an old NIKE branded one on ebay though. Very old but they're meant to be a good piece of kit.

The lightweight low profile one on SGS's website looks pretty decent.

I have an SGS one, it seems to do its job well enough.

I thought that. My uncle has had the garage reps round again with promotions and there's a two tonne low profile with them at an introductory £120. That's for proper industrial though (whatever that means). The fucker is that non of them tell you how quick the rise is in the body of the framework . The one I bought was 70mm entry point which put me well clear on all 3 cars. However that's only for the first 350mm of the jack body, after which the frame rises up significantly. Meaning I still couldn't get under a good solid lifting point like a suspension mount without driving it up on wood first. Which was what I wanted to get away from doing!

Just do it.

I had nothing but issues with SGS jack. Dome had same issue.

They wouldn't do anything about it unless I posted it back at my cost. Their customer service was rubbish - they didn't want to know.

Instead went and bought one from Halfords.

Out of absolute desperation I bought a Silverline 2 tonne job. I thought I’d last about 15 minutes but it’s done 18 months sterling service so I can’t complain.

Trolly jack? Just a lazy mans indulgence, get one of these, only £1.7.6d, and you'll never have a motor drop on your head again.

Lovely. Can you knock me one up for that money, and make sure it starts at 70mm! Top man!

I’ve got one of these as well, they’re great for the money

Another SGS 3 tonner owner here - lifts everything with ease.

Compared to the noddy Silverline one I got off Amazon Warehouse for five shillings and half pence which couldn't lift a Victorian lady's skirt, let alone a one tonne car.

I have the SGS 2.5 tonne lightweight* aluminium racing jack (25kg). Lightweight my arris, but it's the dog's danglies

I have both of the sgs 2 ton jacks, a generic looking one and a low entry one. They are both pretty crap to be honest, both had issues right out the box which led to me having to bleed them a few times to get them working. The low entry is the better of the two but it's still crap. I believe that the 3 ton is better quality but having experienced the poor quality of the other ones it's put me off buying despite the glowing recommendations.

Clarke low profile job, about £100 with the eventual vat free offer if you register and never buy anything.

Heh, I have one of those Lidl jacks (except I bought mine from Aldi).  Had it 12 years and it's still going strong.

I got mine from Aldi too, still going strong even after 2 years outside propping up a trailer!

I thought I lost it, but imagine my surprise when I pulled the tarp off the trailer and there it is! Still 'temporarily' holding up the drawbar whilst I get some bricks to do it properly.

I bought a deep, low profile shop jack that's good for 3 ton.

Very similar to this:

https://www.amazon.com/BAISHITE-Hydraulic-Profile-Trolley-Lifting/dp/B077VL5M4V/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1546403672&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=3+ton+low+profile+floor+jack&psc=1

(Superb name)

Rapid pump up under load, usually a single pump will bring it up to the car. Just a smidgeon over 3 inches (76mm) tall at the pad. The Chieftain is pretty low all the way round (4"/100mm) and it has no issues.
