Cheers in advance

Do MoT testers inspect the speed rating on tyres?

I've seen some good part worn winter tyres on ebay but the speed rating is lower than the current ones (and lower than the car's top speed).

Speed ratings are not part of a class IV test. Size (same across axle) tread and condition are all you look at. On a class VII test, speed/load ratings are checked.

TBH the R25 probably weighs the same as a new 'small'* car.

Dunno what model yours is but a 2 litre R25 GTS is about the same weight as a modern Clio DCi.

Mine's exactly that model, and blimey that's just wrong when you consider what a little bean can the original Clio was.

What's this pic about mk1_4dr?

DSCF8436.jpg

I see the two splendid examples of Autoshite on the hard shoulder in the foreground but is the Dettendorfer truck running over the chelsea tractor on the other carriageway?

I didn't want to clog up the calendar pics thread with o/t.

I think it's Dave's car breaking down on the way back from collecting it.

...but is the Dettendorfer truck running over the chelsea tractor on the other carriageway?

Didn't notice that before! On closer examination, it looks like a Fiat Stilo making a panic dive for the 3rd lane, 'cos the Iveco's right indicator's come on. The Iveco's a left hooker, so the Fiat pilot's panicking with some justification.

Really stupid question. Corsa VXR - the current one. Is it really gutless or what? 'Followed' one the other day, and the 1600kg/140bhp Volvo had no problem keeping up with the 1200kg/190bhp Corsa. That shouldn't work. But...the Corsa needed ragged thro the gears, doing 2 or 3 changes at the limiter, to my one.

I'm sure if it had happened at Knockhill, the Corsa would've been well away. Then I'd have had to sell a kidney to buy the minty S70R that's on eBay atm.

Is all the power at the top end, then? Like a Powervalve Yam stroker?

It was good fun, and hand gestures were exchanged  , but I'm at a loss to understand it. After I'd compared the cars' published specs, I could only imagine that the VXR either A) wasn't what it was made out to be, or B) had a powerband as wide as a gnat's cock.

Hmmm...might have to book a testdrive/joyride now.

Should I rust-proof my modern? Assume I want to keep it for another 10-15 years, will the back arches and door bottoms start getting a bit frilly - and if so should I be sticking a bit of wax in the right places - and when? It's a four-year-old Honda CRV (yes, I know, sacrilege to have such a youngster on this forum). I've never seen a rusty CRV, but plenty of earlier Hondas have back arches made of paper doilies... The CRV has large chunks of plastic everywhere which will do a good job of trapping moisture and hiding any early signs till its too late.

Aye, 'twas a VXR alright. He was trying - he kept twatting it off the rev limiter*, and spitting flame out of its' little triangular exhaust arse. Corners, he needs some practice on. Or to try it in a 14 year old V70 on Arrowspeeds...

Ah well, it'll have to remain one of life's little mysteries.

*Maybe he was using the wrong bit of the rev range.

Should I rust-proof my modern?

Wouldn't do any harm. Like you say, all the plastic shields on there can hide a multitude of sins. So it's probly as well to get well acquainted with the hidden bits of it, if you intend to keep it in the longer term.

Had a bit of a scare in the Safari yesterday when we took it up to Suffolk and back. Twixt Deben and Orwell it started making a ticking noise like a loose tappet turned up to full volume. Eased off the revs and the ticking changed to a rivet being rattled in a tin can then the noise stopped and all was well. A bit like something working loose and then being bounced around before finding a corner to lie in. So I stopped at the next lay-by and checked to make sure we hadn't shed a belt or something but couldn't see anything so we carried on towards home at reduced speed (between giffer and truck) and as we got closer to home without further incident went back to normal which is one speed less than Fangio and two less than white vans.

Today I whipped the rocker cover off after spending an hour looking for my tool roll because I forgot I had put it in the spare wheel. Everything looks perfectly normal.

So I am baffled. Can anyone think what else I should look at that doesn't involve taking the engine out?

And on to the next problem: Getting tyres off rims.

Now the DS is excellent for splitting the bead from the rim, just put the tyre under the car and drop the suspension, but I couldn't get the bead over the rim even with an eight foot scaffold pole over the tyre lever, just got a buggered tyre lever. Very helpfully the u-tube clips I have found seem to skip the actual getting the bead over the rim. Is there a technique that I have missed? How does Mr Boll do it? :)
