I don't think an M reg Volvo has canbus :)

It does have a bulb fail warning light but I don't think it asks the bulbs before coming on.

What’s the going rate to have a set of brake pads fitted at a garage?

For the van like. Parts are £22 from ECP so they’re not some unobtainium shit

I paid £48 (cash, £58 plastic) supplied and fitted on my 08 Kangoo.

The bulb fail lamp just comes on when there's a break in any of the light circuits, it's a rudimentary system. My 740 had one too.

If it's a 940 it won't have any sort of diagnostic equipment.

Best multicar insurance policies (suggestions sought )

Just received renewal through for mine & Mrs FL 's daily's which are both squarely in the AS category and renewal has increased by almost 50% due to Mrs FL having a car park bump last year and having a truck skid into the back of her car and technically writing it off (although we bought it back and still on the road) although we have protected no claims. Currently with Above but not at all impressed by renewal! Suggestions for alternatives welcome, cars are 2003 C3 & 2008 C4GP

Both cars definitely not old enough to get any AS crap classic insurance and multicar policy's I find tend to be shit in that if you have a bump in one you lose any no claims on both . Probably be cheaper to both be main driver one one each and named driver on the other .

I have one classic policy and they won't put Sigma on classic as well because I use it to and from different places of work and a modern (2006 focus titanium td estate ) as "best" car just for s.d.p , I find most brokers can't be arsed to sort a best deal and come back with ridiculous prices ....

2007 VW T5 van

Won't unlock passenger side door.

Is there any way in without resorting to butchery?

Anyone have an idea? I'm about an hour away from destroying the door 'card' which actually will be the world's strongest plastic

Anyone got access to Citroen's parts system, after air con pipe for Mk1 C3, think part no is 647794, there is a set for sale on the bay with part no 6477.J4 but seller doesn't know if that is for my car, can anyone assist?

6477.J4 is showing as for an early Citroen DS3.

I'd just give it a whirl and see what happens. I can't see fitting an LED being a problem. Probably says incompatible as they've not tested the LEDs on a car of that era.

Could be the bulb warning bit. I believe on cars of that age it works by passing a very low current through the bulb at all times & an open circuit triggers a failure warning. I'm not sure what LEDs do with very low currents, something at the back of my mind says diodes need a certain amount of power to 'wake up' & flow any electric.

My 2008 Subrau Impreza has illuminated a couple of warning lights. I know one will relate to emissions, and the other the ABS. Will the code reader below provide any decent information? Also, I notice this doesn't do ABS codes. Are there any reasonable priced ones that do?

Would it be worth buying one as I'll be asking a garage to replace what's failed?

I've got one like those for my bike, makes life much much easier between the downpipes.

I'd say it depends how many of them you'll use.  If only one or two, then they're suddenly not so cheap.   I have an old chain wrench which never fails to get the filter off, even if they're over-tight, in which case they get a bit squashed in the process.  It's not the pleasantest tool to use because the chain sometimes flops around until you get it tight on the filter,

Concerning the VW van with the locked door - would it be possible to operate the locking rods from outside using a 'slim jim', like a car thief might?

Hey hey, just wondering if any Xantia lickers can assist. I'm fairly sure that my ABS is inoperative at the mo.  Have had a couple of wheel-lock skids in last couple of days.  There's no warning light on though.

It had a reluctor ring replaced for it's last (April) MoT.  Really unsure where to start with this one (I have checked the fuse).  Any ideas/memories?

It's a 2001 facelift 110 Hdi 2.0.

Chris

Have had a wee look at FCF too, but nothing similar....

Or wire coat hanger.

Thank you, that's saved me going to go and have a look at it. Cheers

You might need to blow the crud off the sensor. If it’s caked over the end, it won’t see that the wheel has locked.

Ref t5 door , just keep trying all combos of handles / locked and unlocked until it eventually opens . Might take half an hour but better than destroying the door trim . They all open eventually

In the Saab, which engine is it that sludges its sump?

Is the 1.8 turbo ok?

Posted

1.8 is actually a 2.0 but new enough to be past the problems

Ta muchly. The car in question is an 05 plate.

Strong advice - will hopefully have a free day on Saturday to inspect.  Do you think that could still be the case even though there're no warning lights on like?

Pretty sure it wouldn't trigger any lights to come on because there's nothing wrong or broken. It's a combination of the chopper wheel on the brakes getting caked up with old brake dust and the sensor itself getting obscured by a layer of crud. I can't remember if it's optical or magnetic but with a bit of luck it's just blocked up somewhere.

Watching Vera last night on the telly.

Her landrover appeared to have an auto box selector thing between the seats!

What's the craic with that then?

Posted

According to this article on PH (ugh) she had a special order Defender V8 auto delivered in 2002, but then asked for it to be converted back to a manual.  Perhaps the clutch got too heavy as she got older and she's had it swapped back again?

It should be a fairly straightforward swap - I was considering swapping the engine and autobox from my knackered Range Rover into my 200Tdi Defender when the LEZ was being introduced in London, but in the end it turned out to be exempt because they consider the station wagon to be an estate car.

How hard a job are trailing arm bushes on a Rover 45?  Is it something that can be done with a hacksaw, vice and selection of sockets, or are Bo11oxesque levels of fettling ability required - or is it one of those jobs that simply isn't going to get done without a 50-tonne hydraulic press?

Posted

45 ta bushes are easy . Leave the arms on . Mark the adjuster bolt on the small arm. Undo it and the two that hold the big bush on . Undo brake flexi hose and abs wires as reqd . Pull the front of the arm down as far as poss and wedge it down with a bit of wood.

Measure the fitted depth of the bush .

Use a hammer to knock it out towards the outside of the car .

Use a grinder to put a small chamfer on the leading edge of the new bush . DO NOT lube or grease it .

Gently tap the bush in from the outside in . Start with tiny little taps until it’s seated squarely then beat it on in until it’s at the correct depth .

Refit all parts .

On a two post lift they take about 30 to do a pair and I don’t even take the wheels off ,
