Mine is the dw8 lump. I've looked into the general gauges too and sliding it into a hose though

I've read that Viton seals / o-rings are lhm+ compatible, can anyone confirm this?

Hoping to start rebuilding my hydraulic pumps soon....

I'm looking to change the shock absorbers on my old Merc 300SE. Given it's a sloppy old thing anyway am I best going for standard or heavy duty? I would quite like it to be a bit snappier but not at the expense of a crap ride given it'll never be a Lotus 7.

If I am on someones 'ignore' list, will I still see their posts?

Yes, but they won't see yours.

Just looking at pics of a Lamborghini Countach on ebay and thought the indicator stalk looked shitely familiar

then remembering my old s3 landy I googled and found this

Did Lamborghini really source parts like this from Rover or is it just coincidence that they're almost identical?

They're a standard Lucas part of the era, they're on loads of buses too but obviously with a longer stalk.

You could buy the bus ones brand new from Lucas up until recently, and they would even sell you just the horn push off the end!

They stopped making them so I've had to 3D print replacement ends so we can repair them.

getting fed up with poor quality new parts,,,,would it be worth getting a large bore syringe to slide inside new ball joints etc and fill them up with grease in the hopes the last a bit better?

Not unless it's designed for a Diesel engine - diesel oil has much more detergents in it

I've been looking at a 2005 Volvo V40 on gumtree it is advertised as follows:

Volvo s40 2.0 SE d turbo diesel 4dr saloon
125k miles
Very smokey on start up and clears the warmer it runs hence low price

Anyone got any idea on what is causing the smoke? The price is quite good, I was trying to work out once I've added on what is faulty if it is still worth while.

Would it be the turbo or injectors causing the smoke when cold?

Find a garage that has an adaptor for their balancing machine that uses the wheel studs.

An awful lot of places either dont have these or just cant be arsed as it takes a little longer than a normal wheel.

^ Dynabeads interesting !  ..never heard of them.  Anyone with direct experience of using them ?

..and they have the advantage that they don't ruin my beautiful* paint job too

This is from Dynabeads own website - where they reproduce a a review in Rolls Royce Club magazine :

http://www.dynabeads..._article.pdf

Dolly wobbler says no inner-tube is used for the Shitroen A series (2cv/Dyane/Ami range) wheels, so it definitely a possibility.. and for £10 or thereabouts it's a cheap option.

..and it says they are usable when inner-tube is fitted.!   That's a bonus because my old S7 (fat wheeled Sunbeam motorcycle) with heavy steel wire-wheels generally need a whole lot of balancing out. !

Haven't seen one of those for donkey's years.   But I guess some old boy must still have their old equipment working

Definitely worth asking around - Thanks.   mind you the 3-stud pattern probably doesn't help either.  However, if I take in all five wheels at once then it will reduce their setting up pain (..the poor dears !) :D

I use dynabeads on occasion too. Well, not the proper ones, I use airsoft pellets to the same effect. They have to be added while fitting the tyre as they dont fit through the valve core.

Seems to work ok....you get a bit of a swishing noise from them as you accelerate as they rattle around in the wheels until speed is high enough (fifteen mph or so) for them to be thrown to the inside of the tyre and stay there, then again as you stop when they fall to the bottom of the tyre.

I don't own a diesel car and never plan to own one, I like petrol engines. My stupid question is this:

A petrol station nearby sells red diesel. What is to stop anyone filling up a few jerry cans and using it in the daily car? Am sure people do just that. The chances of being caught must be pretty slim surely? I have never seen a roadside check with cars being pulled over and dipped, in over 30 years of driving. Does this still actually happen?

Just curious.

I would like to look into fitting a water temp gauge and rev counter to the c15. The same engine is used in cars with a tach and a coolant temp gauge so should not be too much of in issue. I would like to know where the temp gauge sensor should be on this engine though? That way I can see if it has a blanking plug on it or even a unconnected sensor. Thanks

Below the fuel filter on the thermostat housing like an XUD.

The rev counter pick up is on the flywheel, I think it's the sensor at the front of the gearbox

I've seen it happening once in 23 years of driving.

I know people in remoter parts of the Highlands and Islands whose cars haven't seen white diesel for years.

Cheers. I have a sensor on the flywheel which I thought was speedo till I realised that was on the driveshaft. I'll have to see where wires go and tap into it.

I have seen roadside dippers around here a few times in the last decade. The excise men also just turned up in the work car park at my last job from time to time. They dipped every diesel vehicle. They didn't go by the boot badge either, I guess they get a sense for what burns oil and what doesn't.

The customs guys were fairly often to be seen around the agicultural auctions at Thainstone where they would dip the hayseeds coming down from the hills to the cattle mart in their beat old 4x4s.

Over here I see them every now and then. They ignore most cars coz they are pretty much all diesel so they would be there all day but concentrate on trucks and pickups and stuff, and any older cars driven by hippy-looking types.

I have got 800 litres of red in the garage and access to another 5000 or so litres. Cant say Im not tempted, but its a real turbo-bumming if caught using it here.

I work on the Dock and they are resonably regular on the dock road though I would doubt the selection process. I was let through twice in a filthy and scruffy Corsa van while they pulled an 11 plate Peugeot with a well dressed lass and then a similar age X5.

I'm on a bit of the scrounge here, I've ended up with this new Ford power steering rack but i haven't got a clue what it fits, part of the Ford number is missing which doesn't help either.

I think it's a Scorpio rack without the speed sensor but i haven't a clue, anyone else know? It measure 52" from end to end.

Looking at pics and an eBay search looking at photos also it does seem to match a scorpio.
