Will a 2005/6 Peugeot 407HDi 2.0 diesel be an interference engine? Been offered one with a slipped belt and wondering whether it's worth the agro. Cheers

Lovely job, thanks. Might be worth repairing if that's the case, I'm assuming we won't need to take the head off? Cheers

All diesels are interference engines.

That's a rather sweeping statement to make on here ! Someone will be along to say that their 3cyl lister turbo engine fitted to the fiat 126 was freewheeling

My Perkins 4203 is breathing so heavily out of the oil filler cap in the rocker cover that it's spewing oil all over the engine. Is there a breather somewhere that might be blocked or is this is a symptom of shagged valves, or something obvious I haven't thought of?

Don't remember the Perkins having a separate breather apart from on top of the rocker cover.

poorly Perkins: unless the sump is very overfull suspect piston ring wear or damage first.

Heavy breathing is rings in my experience.

Hopefully the 2 people doing the brake fluid change will be one to operate the pedal and the other will open and close the bleed screws. Open the bleed screw with the pedal up and fluid will dribble out, when the pedal is pushed down the fluid flows out. Just as the pedal gets to the bottom the person on the bleed screw should nip it back up. Then when the pedal is lifted the master cylinder will only be able to drag fresh fluid in. That is the principle but there are many ways it can go wrong, if in doubt have it done by a professional as brakes are rather important not to mess it up.

My best mate's Dad used to make him help with these - as teenagers, the sound of a chap in his sixties bellowing "FOOT OFF" was, like, totes hilarious, man - it's a tradition we continue to observe to this day, sometimes when we're not even bleeding brakes.

Why is my van working so well?  Before I got the Movano re-MOT'd, I was still using it occasionally - maybe once every couple of weeks, sometimes just to nip to Tesco and sometimes to go and visit mates or whatever.  It used to smoke like an absolute c*nt for the first several minutes after starting, it'd put out clouds of blue, grey, white or black smoke under acceleration (depending on its mood), and I had to top the oil up pretty much every time I used it.  In the 500 miles I've done since the MOT, I haven't had to put any oil in at all, it's stopped smoking (apart from a bit of black smoke under hard acceleration which you'd expect), and it's happier to rev too.  What's going on?  It makes me uneasy when broken chod starts working again for no apparent reason... :?

At a guess it's burned off some shit partly blocking an injector.

I maybe over did it with the easy start.

Do we have any shiters involved in sign making / print ? I'm thinking about getting some vinyl stickers printed to brand up my loan car.

Who's the super reliable firm that shiters use to get pre-2001 plates made up? A trawl of ebay gets a load of chinese tat and lack of clarity about whether or not they'll inlcude the postcode and BS...bs.

I just want plates that look like they came with the car in 1998 - plain, no postcodes, the proper font, won't fade after 30 seconds sunlight. It's a Rover with an Isle of Wight reg, so the chances of getting proper dealer logos is chuff-all.

Super. Thanks (now quietly seething that they don't have an easily searchable list of makes for which they have dealer graphics)

If you have the plate they can copy it for you, if not not too sure what you could do.

Any good rodent control ideas? I have several cars in a farm barn that has just become a rat hotel. They've moved in as the harvest activities have taken their food from the field, to the adjacent farm buildings.

Just a matter of time before they start to make a king size bed out of my car upholstery. Nibble on the wires and hoses too.

Mice had a good chew on anything plastic under the allegro' s bonnet during its last hibernation.
