^I dunno, that's why I'm asking. It doesn't have a distributor - there is a coilpack bolted where you would expect it to be on a 6N/2F polo, and a look with a torch hasn't shown up a sensor in either of the usual places (flywheel and front pulley).

You have PM

if that doesn't help, then send me the Engine code

It helped ;) based on that, I'd sy the bugger is hiding behind the starter motor.

As a newbie I've missed a lot of stuff so I have a couple of stupid questions:

1. What does FTW mean? I'm pretty well up on txt speak but never heard that one before.

2. Where did the GR9 etc. stuff come from? Personally I think it's a GR10 idea.

Apologies for being thick!

The way I see it is this.

FTW is For The Win. What that means? Fucked if I know. I always knew it as Fuck The World. But times change.

GR9 and others, well if a numeral above 8, then it's good, but numerals below 8 means shitter than shit.

Don't trust the gauge reading without double checking it is my rule - If the engine isn't hot and neither is the rad but the gauge says 80-90 deg the gauge is lying. Prolly duff sensor. This happens so often I went and bought one of those digital IR thermometers so I can tell quickly and without burning myself. If the rad and hoses are cool but the engine is hot, it will be the stat.

..How about if the engine is hot, hoses are hot (touchable but couldn't hold on to them for long) but the guage is still reading about 1/6 of the way up? When in the past (and on all other examples of same vehicle) it will sit one notch below half way once properly warmed up?

As simple as a dodgy guage/sender? I've changed the thermostat already, the questionable thing is that if left to idle for 10 minutes or so the guage will eventually reach halfway and trigger the radiator fan (this was 4 months ago in decent weather).

..Cheers, and apologies for slight question hi-jack.

Gompo,. yes, that sounds like a dodgy sender. Lower than expected readings can also be a high resistance in the wiring though, so check the plug to the sender too - if it looks manky it might well be your culprit.

I've got a stupid MOT-related question, about headlamps. One of the Dedra's has got a goodly crack in it, and as it's the version with the headlight wipers they seem to be made of unobtainium (certainly in RHD spec). My inexpert reading of the MOT manual says that this shouldn't fail as long as the beam aim is ok and the brightness is unaffected (and similar to the other headlight)... is this right or would a tester take one look at the crack and fail it?

Advice also gratefully received on whether any of the repair kits you see on t'interweb are any good...

Posted

^ yeah, as long as the aim is fine, the light ouput isn't diminished and the crack isn't protruding or sharp it should pass.

Yay! Thanks :)8)

Stick this here save making a new thread as it's slightly o/t:

Any of our model collecting/selling chums on here got one of these for sale?

http://www.flickr.com/photos/magicbus54 ... otostream/

It has to be the same as that (i.e Blower's Transport) in the same colour and all that sort of jazz. Unboxed or not mint is no problem as I haven't got shit loads of money etc.

Another stupid question from me but car related this time: can you still buy a new car with pop up headlights? If not, what was the last to have them?

Posted

Pop-up lights are now banned IIRC.

Last production car to have them? Erm, not sure..........Lotus Esprit?

Posted

They're not explicitly banned, they're just at odds with modern car design. They'd need some kind of instant closing mechanism to meet pedestrian collision (like a Nissan GT-R bonnet in reverse). But the biggest killer is probably that no-one wants to add a massive chunk of weight and drag to their cars.

Lotus Esprit and Chevrolet Corvette were the last to have them.

I thought the last car to have pop-ups was some sort of Ferrari?

Isn't it the same thinking that led to Land-Rover deleting the bulkhead vents on the Defenders? I asked the question when I was at Lode Lane about 4 years ago, just wondered if it was some sort of health and safety issue like the "power bulge" on the bonnet...

1. FTW means - For The Win - Its usually used when someone has a good idea .i.e - Buy that Tagora and roll in it as it is FTW

2. GR9/GR100101 etc... Comes from GR8, which is text-speak for 'Great' - I think its supposed to be poking fun and the GR8 typo where someone must have typed it wrong i.e. GR9 instead of '8'

What is the name of the pin that holds a Metro handbrake cable to the drum and is secured with a split pin, and where the bloody hell can I get a pair?

EDIT: eBay tells me it is a clevis pin. Now is a Metro the same as a Mini?

MGR Part number CLZ409 - pin-clevis pivot to brake, Mini and Metro

Does it look like a wee threadless bolt with a hole drilled in it? If so, the above is it. £1.15 MGR Price.

Mrs P has a pierced nose. She has had it done about 78402398 times and on each occasion it went bad. She then had it done with TITANIUM and it went bad. The one she has in now is SILVER. SILVER is the new TITANIUM. FTW.

Got woke up in the middle of the night to find a few ridge tiles had blown off the roof and ended up through the back window of my van, and given it a few scropes here and there as you'd imagine.

Will the house insurance cover it? We're claiming anyway, to get the roof fixed - so they might as well buy me a new back window and a few litres of paint. I don't mind doing the work myself like, I was going to paint the bounder sometime soon anyway.

EDIT: Nevermind, I got a window for £20, and I can live with the scropes

gold is inert too - hence its use in jewellery. Gold FTW

I'd imagine so Tone, on the "sharp edges" rules.

Hammer a smalller sill..... you know the rest :D

Posted

I assumed it'd be structural (it's mrs_tone's '97 Mundano) but I've not properly looked at it tbh. If it's just a sharp edge I could just hammer some duck tape over it?

Posted

Get some X-pack arches on there Tone.

Thanks SoC. I've decided the car is over-fueling too now though, I'm hoping it's unlrelated and possibly the Lambda sensor. Will have a poke around tomorrow hopefully.

Cheers.

Next question, anyone know/recommend a tame welder in Durham?

Posted

^ Yeah. Me!

PS, would be a prescribed area fail on that sill - it's going to be within 30cm of the rear suspension mount (and probably a rear seatbelt mount too ;)
