Sorry if this has been asked before but if an insurance policy says you can drive another vehicle on a third party only basis, does that vehicle have to be covered by a named driver policy and what if the named driver has died?

Posted

The other car has to be insured (and not with a trade policy by the way), and as regards the death of the other driver it'll be a grey area. I suppose as long as their insurance is still valid you'd be ok but if the police check you'd probably be in breach of some law or other.

I posted on the Grumpy Old Man thread that my Audi A4 got taken out on a roundabout a few days ago. As expected it has been written off but unfortunately they have classified it as a class B so I am not able to reserve the salvage. They have offered £1500, its a W-reg 1800 petrol 91K, its pre accident condition was excellent no body damage/scratches/paint defects, interior was mint (non smoker, no dogs or small kids) and no mechanical defects. The other party insurance have amitted liability and I'm fully comp.

My question is as their first offer is higher than expected sould I just take it or hold out for more on principle? If I try for more (reject their offer) what happens next?

Thanks.

What has your insurer actually said about the offer? Get on the blower to them and ask their advice to be honest.

Thank you, my insurance phoned earlier and they asked a load of questions, (how long had I had it, what did I pay etc) and then she said they valued it £1500 then sent a mail confirming this. Some people have said always reject the first offer but not sure if this is based on experience or what.

I have drive any vehicle, yet the certificate simply states it has to be owned by another person, nothing about it being insured. Although I'd have to read the small print first

how much does it cost to buy a mint "W-reg 1800 petrol 91K"?

if it is less than what they offered then personally I would accept, otherwise not. You have the right to be returned to the state you were in before the accident

Posted

I was offered £2000 for my Passat last year which i accepted as that was what i paid for it a year earlier, If you can find a W reg 1.8 A4 like yours for sale for more then get evidence and sent it to them but personally I'd except their offer, I paid £2000 for a W reg A4 1.8SE with 91k 3 years ago!

Many thanks, I'll look at a few ads tomorrow and if the offer is near enough I'll OK it

Give it a good clean out with petrol (or something similar but cheaper).

Anyone know of anything that's like petrol, but cheaper?

I could do with some to fill up the 'fuel' tank of my car.

If pez keeps going the way it is, single malt Scotch.

My stupid question: someone on here had a brilliant PhotoShopped avatar of Robert Mugabe in a wee small car, maybe a Kia. The user might have been Mr Duke, I can't remember. Does anyone have this photo? My Long-Haired C.O. thinks it's hilarious and has been begging me to give it to her. And the photo would be good too. :twisted:

Vielen dank fur Ihr verstandnis.

Cheers to dieselnutjob and Trigger, did a bit of research on Audi values and mailed the insurance, they rang to day and upped the offer by £250 and should get my excess back as well, Result.

How does one import a car from Jersey that's spent its entire life on the island? When landed, to drive it home is it the usual insurance \ book it in for an MOT chestnut?

I would have thought insurance alone was enough assuming it's taxed/tested (or the the equivelant of) in Jersey. If people can drive foreign registered cars over here on holiday etc I can't see why you can't drive back from Jersey.

I've been looking into this with the Escort. Turns out if I register it in Germany or CZ and drive it across Europe, that's fine.

Until it hits UK soil when, according to the DVLA droid I spoke to, I can't drive it until it's UK registered. Daft, but as far as they're concerned if I lived outside the UK it'd be no problem driving it here on furrin plates, but as I'm a UK resident and it's my car, I have to trailer it from the port.

Which won't be happening.

Jersey doesn't have RFL and doesn't have an MOT. From what I remember imported cars are subjected to a horrendous 'shaken' style inspection by the BVS, and that's it.

'Sell' it to Butch, get him to register it, drive it home. Butch then 'sells' you the car back.

Colc is probably your man for the detail, but I imported and re-registered my daily driver that I bought in Guernsey 7 years ago. I can't imagine Jersey is that much different to Guernsey. Simply put:

- Ferry over, drive away (I was still insured under my Guernsey policy - IIRC I drove it on Guernsey plates with a Guernsey taxdisc in the 'screen for about two months while the following steps progressed to their conclusion and had no Police interest whatsoever);

- Rescind Guernsey logbook to their DVLA equivalent;

- Obtain European Certificate of Conformity for the car from Honda (despite the fact it was plainly UK spec and built in Swindon...);

- MOT done on chassis number by local garage;

- Apply for UK registration using CoC and MOT certificate;

- Receive V5;

- Get UK plates made up, apply to car, add RFL and a UK insurance policy and you're away.

The bit I've missed out is import duty and/or VAT - you'll need to look into this. I was exempt as I'd owned the car for more than six months as a Guernsey resident, and in theory I was issued with a restricted V5 insofar as if I sold the car within 12 months of registering it here, I'd be liable for the duty and/or the VAT. I didn't, so it was academic.

The only other issue I had when I sold the car in 2006 was prospective buyers trying to get their head around why a 1999 S-plate car had been registered in 2004.

You don't even have to do that. There are no restrictions on how long you've been a non-UK resident in order to qualify for that. It's only a case of "moving" to CZ for a week. Get a bank account in your name there, registered to a mate's address, keep a copy of a statement with you for proof of address, and Bob's your uncle.

How accurate are these likely to be please?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gunsons-Digit ... 4aaddbcc16

Sort of thought it could be handy pre-MOT in case the emssions are up the Swanney so may save on MOT cost if you know it'll fail.

Cheers in advance,

Borrowed a Gunson (not quite the same as these) from a workmate a couple of times and it proved to be very accurate, vehicles were later checked with the MOT kit.

Eldest daughter recently traded her Civic for an Astra.

Last week she got the engine management light up and the temperature was up in the nineties.

I had a bit of a look, in the dark and rain, saw nothing obvious and took it for a run.

It was idling at 90°, dropped to 80° as I drove round our estate and the two neighbouring ones at 30mph - about three miles.

Went onto the dual carriageway and drove up a mile long gradient that I guess is about 1 in four, speeds up to 70mph.

Temperature dropped to the bottom of the scale.

Turned around and drove back the other way, same speed downhill then on the flat shoved it up to 90, drove about five miles then again turned around and drove back to where I entered the dual carriageway.

Speed now down to 30 again on residential roads and temperature up to 80° again.

Indicated temperature also reflected in the heater output.

Had the codes read yesterday, EML had gone out after a few restarts and the only codes were the crank position sensor and some garbage about the cruise control that neither of us knew was there. (Only time I have driven the car).

It's a '53 1.8 petrol, Ecotec engine. Goes very well although a bit thirsty.

The symptoms seem rather contradictory to me and seem to rule out a sticking 'stat or freewheeling pump but you guys may well be aware of something that may explain it.

Only thing I can think of is a sensor being completely misleading - virtually operating in reverse.

While the reading was high the engine was not noticably hot. Felt the top and bottom hoses (squished them to check for air pockets) and they were normal - hot but not exceptionally so.

An Astra with the EML light on?, I don't believe you!

Well, it isn't now :) Could have been an hallucination perhaps :?

The guy who read/cleared the codes did say that the Ecotec was plagued with niggles, generally duff sensors that were a cheap fix.

Posted

My dosh is on the 'stat and it's a cheap way of finding out anyhow. Obviously the faster you're going the more cool/cold air hits the car so it's keeping the temperature down. If it's racing back up in stop start traffic or slow speeds it could be the stat is knackered.

Some Vauxhalls (including 8 and 16V) models do run quite hot at low speeds/town traffic but for the sake of a 'stat I'd change that and see what happens. The 1.8 seems a funny engine, a lot of problems associated with Ecotecs seem to (mostly) apply to them, the 2.0 are slightly more likely to do a headgasket and the 1.6 ones are a bloody good option as they don't seem to give much agro in my experience.

Posted

Don't trust the gauge reading without double checking it is my rule - If the engine isn't hot and neither is the rad but the gauge says 80-90 deg the gauge is lying. Prolly duff sensor. This happens so often I went and bought one of those digital IR thermometers so I can tell quickly and without burning myself. If the rad and hoses are cool but the engine is hot, it will be the stat.

Is the crank sensor code P0321? Indicates a dodgy one thats about to strand you somewhere where p0322 tells you it's already failed.

Speaking of, does anyone know where the crank sensor is located on a '99-2000 VW 1.0 (polo/lupo/arosa)?

Is it not housed within / on / between the Distributor ?
